Live events demanding video production require a flexible video switcher like the V-8HD Multi-Format HDMI Video Switcher from Roland. This multi-format video switcher can input up to eight HDMI video sources, switch them, add effects, and output them consistently to screens or projectors. Whether you're switching video for a live presentation or live streaming, the V-8HD has the features necessary for high-quality, live video switching.
The HDMI inputs can accept up to 1080p60 resolution feeds from numerous sources, such as media players, computers, professional video cameras, and more. Two of the HDMI inputs utilize internal scaling hardware, which separately scales and/or converts videos of varied resolutions into the selected output resolution, ensuring output consistency between sources. The V-8HD supports numerous effects such as cut, mix, wipe, chroma and luma key, flip, fade, and more. You can also store up to eight .bmp and .png files in internal memory to add images to your effects.
The V-8HD features an 18-channel audio mixer and up to 24-bit, 48 kHz PCM audio with an effects library that provides gain, de-esser, noise reduction, and more. It also features left/right analog RCA inputs and outputs as well as a 1/4" TRS headphone output. It also features a 4.3" TFT color LCD, which previews each input and program output, all on a single screen. On the top of the unit, there are multiple rows of input and output buttons, position, source, and levels buttons, and a fade T-bar, giving you full control of your production within the small, portable frame. You can also remotely control and monitor Atomos recorders to start/stop using a trigger button, so you don't miss a vital record. While the feature set of the V-8HD is expansive, it is also intuitive and simple to operate after the initial setup.
Music venues, houses of worship, streaming media production companies, and convention centers that rely on volunteers or less-experienced technicians can take advantage of the rich feature set and ease of use, with minimal impact on existing infrastructure. You can even pair the switcher with a BOSS single or double footswitch and program over 100 commands, adding to the versatility of the V-8HD.
Maximum Connectivity
The V-8HD seamlessly mixes eight HDMI sources with Full HD support, even when the sources have mismatched frame rates and color spaces. With the built-in scalers on two of the HDMI inputs, you can easily interface with client-provided sources like computers, tablets, smartphones, gaming consoles, and legacy 4:3 devices.
More HDMI Inputs and Outputs
With the V-8HD's eight HDMI inputs and three outputs, you're able to offer clients a vast amount of creative freedom, without increasing the budget.
Set Up Layers, Effects, and Keys
With the V-8HD's five composition layers, you'll always keep audiences engaged with visually appealing content.
Ultra-Mobile, Lightweight, and Efficient
Thanks to its compact footprint, the V-8HD fits effortlessly into any live production environment, even when you have to deal with minimal setup space. And it only weighs around 4 lb, making it easy to carry in a backpack or luggage. With its smart feature set, eight HDMI inputs, built-in 18-channel audio mixer, and support for external battery power, the streamlined V-8HD is a versatile and efficient HDMI switcher.
Separate Feeds for Separate Needs
The V-8HD has assignment buttons for sending any of your connected input devices to a dedicated aux output without affecting the main feed. It's also possible to synchronize the aux output with the program output, giving you a built-in 2x distribution amp.
Seamless Memory Recall
With the V-8HD, storing and recalling unique looks requires only a few button presses. The eight memory presets and powerful composition effects engine work together to provide a completely seamless load between the different looks.
Built-In Multiviewer Display
The V-8HD's bright, 4.3" multiviewer display means less gear to buy and haul to the gig. From a single screen, you can monitor all eight video inputs, PGM, and PVW plus menu overlay. Input windows show the camcorder recording status and embedded audio levels. Connect a larger external TV for an immense multiviewer experience, or to make menu changes without moving the focus from the action.
Audio and Effects
The studio-grade, 18-channel audio mixer blends signals from the eight HDMI inputs and stereo RCA inputs, while a feature-packed preset effects library provides setups for everyday production environments like meetings and interviews, plus challenging situations that require wind noise reduction and microphone de-essing.
Automated Video Switching
Input Scan switches input sources randomly or in sequence, while Preset Memory Scan switches between preset memories. Beats per Minute (BPM) Sync is also available, automatically switching Preview and Program at a specified tempo.
Record Triggering and Confirmation
Via HDMI, the V-8HD operator can trigger Atomos recorders to start and stop recording. Some camcorders even display a recording confirmation icon on the input channel of the V-8HD's multiviewer screen, letting you keep an eye on the recording status while staying focused on other critical tasks.
V-8HD iPad Remote Control Utility
The dedicated V-8HD remote control app turns an iPad into an efficient touch interface for the V-8HD. Run essential switching functions, mix audio with virtual faders, change settings and effect parameters quickly, and create up to eight custom scenes for fast, efficient setup changes.
Hands-Free Switching and Control
Stomp on a BOSS single or double footswitch to execute over 100 different switcher commands. Cut to a still image, transition PiP on/off the screen, or drop in a keyed lower-third title. It's also possible to switch the aux output between presenter notes and stage manager messages, turn automatic switching mode on/off, and more.

Roland V-8HD Reviews
Better than an ATEM

I like the V-8HD and its bigger much more expensive brother the V-160HD.
We have two of these and two ATEM MINI EXTREME ISO units and the ATEM never have been used for an event since we got the Rolands because they are junk in comparison.
The built-in DSK and PIP controls that don't require an external app is so much better than an ATEM.
The AUX send so you can send out IMAG through it and use Program for Zoom or Youtube is awesome. No splitter needed then for your camera feed.
Roland has also been updating the software on these since we first got them and making them better. For example at first the DSK couldn't do transparency in image files and that annoyed me, but now it does support it.
It has memory presets to remember what I call scene setups and it is super handy to recall Program, AUX and PIP in one push of the button.
The only upside of the ATEM in comparison is the ISO feature. But we haven't used that for our events ever.
It's Perfect

It has everything except an XLR mic input with +48. But I patch a small format mixer into the RCA's. I would do that anyway no matter what switcher I'm using. There are many 4-channel mixers in the $99 range. You can also patch an aux mix into one of your cameras and use HDMI audio as your main mix. EQ/limiter/comp all very good. Edit on menu screen easy to navigate, but for on-the-fly speed and immediate access, the iPad app is a must. It's excellent. I'm surprised there are no screen shots in the description. App is so much easier than the multi-function knob. One tiny gripe: out of the box, you'll need to upgrade firmware in order to use the iPad app. This is done via USB stick. It only took a few minutes, but not all sticks are compatible. Roland has a list on their site. If you don't need SDI, this is the best choice. I ran an 85 ft HDMI with built-in extender on all 8 cams with no problems.

You cannot, the USB Memory Port is for importing still images or for saving/loading settings. This switcher does not offer video for streaming through USB.

what are the processing and memory requirements of the computer to live stream from the switcher currently I have a MacBook Air 2014 1.4 ghz intel core i5, 4GB memory, intel hd graphics 5000 1536 mb?
Asked by: Guy
This switcher does not have a streaming output. It has HDMI outputs which you can connect to a capture device like the Magewell USB Capture HDMI Gen 2. This Magewell handles some of the processing within the unit, which will make it ideal to work with when you have a computer that is not as powerful.

I am using a TV to monitor the inputs and outputs instead of using the LCD screen. It cuts some of the video and camera shots off at the bottom of the screen. What size monitor should I use to get the actual views?
Asked by: R
The output format of this device is 1080p (16x9)... You should verify the settings on your TV to make sure you are set up to play back at 1080p and 16x9. There should be no issues playing back this signal at full resolution when all settings are verified.
