BenQ TK850 Overview

Enjoy your video games, sports, movies, TV shows, and streaming content on a big screen with the BenQ TK850 HDR XPR 4K UHD Home Theater Projector. It uses XPR technology to project 4K UHD resolution onto the screen with compatible content and features HDR10 and HLG compatibility to produce a wide color gamut for vivid colors. It outputs up to 3000 ANSI lumens of brightness and has a 30,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio to help produce details even in dark areas of the image, which is particularly useful for dark movie or video game scenes.

The projector has two HDMI inputs for connecting your digital HD devices such as a gaming console, Blu-ray player, or cable/satellite box. Its two built-in 5W speakers eliminate the need for external speakers if none are convenient. The TK850 includes an IR remote control for additional convenience.

XPR Technology Projects UHD Resolution
XPR technology combines image processing with the ability of the DMD's mirrors to shift at the microsecond level to allow each mirror to project two pixels per frame, creating a 4K UHD image on your screen from an otherwise non-UHD chip.
Realistic Video Quality with HDR-PRO
HDR-PRO technology is engineered to enhance the 4K HDR viewing experience with a greater contrast range to bring out more detail.
Enhanced Cinema-Optimized Tone Mapping Helps Preserve Dark Details
BenQ Enhanced Cinema-Optimized Tone-Mapping uses Dynamic Iris and Dynamic Black technology to help increase the perceived contrast ratio so you can see dark details more clearly. Dynamic Iris technology controls the amount of light via the optical system to augment contrast. Dynamic Black analyzes a scene's brightness levels to help optimize the light output and contrast, bringing out details in shadows and preventing bright scenes from washout.
HDR Brightness
HDR brightness helps keep the ideal contrast when projecting different image sizes and against various screen gains most commonly used in home theater to help ensure a greater contrast range and enhanced image quality when HDR Mode is activated.
10-Element, 8-Group Lens Array
The 10-element lens array is designed to provide greater light penetration for realistic image quality. The lenses use low-dispersion lens coatings to help minimize chromatic aberration to further enhance clarity.
Accurate Color and Image Integrity
With its single-DMD design to help avoid the alignment issues that arise in multi-panel systems, the TK850 provides sharp images and accurate colors devoid of artifacts, blur, shadowing, and interference patterns.
Custom Sport Modes
Sports Mode is engineered to provide realistic skin tones, balanced outdoor blues and greens, and warm wood grains for indoor sports action, while also accentuating the announcer's commentary and the roar of the crowd. The motion enhancer helps eliminate laggy images, jittery playback, and blurry shadows by inserting 36 interpolated frames per minute in between individual frames for 60 fps videos.
CinemaMaster Audio+ 2
CinemaMaster Audio+ 2 technology helps provide pure vocals and delicate details in mid and high frequencies thanks to the speaker's aluminum driver diaphragm. The resonance chamber helps enhance the wider frequency range to add more resonance to the bass, while heat-resistant Neodymium magnets help minimize distortion.
Flexible Adjustment for Screen Alignment
The TK850 features 1.3x zoom with 10% vertical lens shift to help provide hassle-free installation. Vertical keystone correction adjusts the image to help you achieve a properly squared image, countering the trapezoid effect that occurs when a projector is placed off-center.
Zoom with Focus
The TK850 is engineered to maintain consistent zoom ratio, so images keep their focus from corner to corner.
USB Type-A 3.1 Gen. 1
The USB port can transfer data at speeds up to 5 Gbps. You can also project video, audio, and photos from your compatible USB drive directly without a cable or computer. You can also update the firmware of the projector via USB to help keep it operating at peak efficiency.
Bright, Accurate Color
The TK850 balances 98% of Rec.709 color accuracy and 3000 lumens of brightness for quality viewing of your favorite show or sport.
MEMC Technology
The BenQ 4K Motion enhancer helps render sports and fast action in enhanced detail. MEMC (Motion Estimation/Motion Compensation) technology is engineered to project smooth images at up to 60 Hz.

BenQ TK850 Reviews

A light cannon producing super crisp and colorful images

I've been running an Optoma HD142x 1080p projector for a few years now, which was actually a great piece of kit for the price. I wanted to upgrade to 4K. I had been going back and forth between the HT3550 and the TK850. The lack of brightness of the HT3550 scared be a bit. I do have a dedicated room in my basement which is pretty much 100% light controlled, but I also want to be able to use the projector with some lights on. My viewing is mostly Netflix and live sports and the increased brightness of the TK850 and the dedicated sports mode was the main reason I decided to go with the TK850. I had read almost every review online and watched every Youtube video before completing the purchase. I was a bit worried about the allegedly loud fan noise. First impressions when hooking it up and powering up: Wow, this thing is bright and vivid! 4K content looks stunning. Regarding the fan noise, well ..... you can definitely hear it. I've set mine to ECO (still PLENTY bright) and the fan noise drops considerably, but is still very audible. Once you are watching something, you no longer hear it. But during silent scenes, it's definitely noticeable. It is somewhat louder than my old Optoma HD142x, but not by so much. Still, I would have like it to be more silent. This unit has a dynamic iris which is supposed to increase black levels. I can't really see much of a difference, but there is one issue regarding the dynamic iris, it's LOUD! At least when set to max, then you can hear some ticking noises coming from the iris when it's adjusting and you can see the overall brightness of the image fluctuate a bit. I decided to just disable the dynamic iris for now. One last thing I noticed is how much slower this projector is when locking onto an HDMI signal, atleast compared to my Optoma HD142x. It haven't measured it, but I guess it takes up to a minute from powering it on until I see my Chromecast w/GTV appear on screen. This did also cause some trouble when I set it up initially and was trying to increase the resolution of the Chromecast from 1080P to 4K. When you select a new resolution, the Chromecast starts a countdown timer and you only have about 10 seconds to accept the new resolution. This timer would always count down to zero before the actual 4K image appeared on the screen and I had the opportunity to accept and confirm :) Finally it appeared right as the timer got to zero so I was able to realize what was going on (it always just showed the Searching for source screen and then went back to 1080P. I had to switch to 4K and then hit left and OK to confirm, without seeing anything on the screen and then boom 4K. So to sum up. The good: - Super bright and vivid - Stunning images, especially 4K (Jaw-dropping really) - Installation flexibility, can produce MUCH larger images than my old Optoma HD142x, from the same distance, plus it has a reasonable amount of vertical lens shift which definitely helps The bad: - Would have wanted the cooling fans to be a bit more quiet - Dynamic Iris is noisy - Takes a while to lock onto HDMI signals But the main reason I upgraded was to get 4K in my home theater and overall I'm pretty happy with what I got.

The image from this unit is uniformly excellent, and if it were not for the below would merit five stars. Sorry, but when I pay $1,500 for a video device (and I note that Benq has many more expensive models) and I have a problem with it, I want to call the company and get help. I waited SEVERAL DAYS for an email from their tech support people. The email was helpful, but an interactive conversation would have been important here. For reference, this unit was purchased in October 2020. Were this in April, an excuse for COVID closure would be appropriate. By October...not so much. Other companies have implemented work-from-home and similar solutions. Additionally, the unit says it features HDMI ARC but there's no real implementation. This feature is usually used with Smart TVs that have streaming content to allow that content to pass through the HDMI cable (essentially in reverse) to power a video AV setup or soundbar. The ONLY way this would make sense would be if it passed signal from one of its two inputs to the other, but it does not. In several back-and-forth emails, Benq has not explained itself in calling this an ARC-capable unit.

I love the idea of projectors and turning your home into a theater with the big screen experience. The best advice I can give you is Do your homework research reviews. I went from a Sony Bravia 3LCD (1080p) to this BenQ 4k UHD theater projector. First off... 4K is the way to go.... HUGE difference is picture quality all around (DVD, BR and 4K)! This is brighter than the Sony, but it's also much louder (fan) and runs much hotter! I've only watched a few movies on it so far so I can't tell if the heat will be an issue or not, but I can say the increase in fan noise is noticeable during quite moments in movies. Put a good surround sound with it and you can't tell :-) For the price point, great picture quality, easy to use and hang but I'd have hoped for less fan noise. All in all, a very good buy and will enjoy this for years of crystal clear movies. Stuckonu5

If you need a good ambient light projector this is it. I have purchased 4 projectors in 3 years and this is by far the best. Set dynamic iris to low and its perfect.

I recently purchased this TK850 projector for my media room and I'm very happy with it. I was struggling to finalize between HT3550 and TK850, there is a very slight difference between them. I'm very happy with the purchase and highly recommend to others.

Received on time was packaged well which was a concern of mine. When first time turn and set up on a table a the height just at bottom of screen was easy to adjust. Picture was bright and was in a basement with some light was ok but the colors were washed out. But with a dark room and on white screen almost to bright but after some adjustments the picture was good. I like others notice at times picture brightens and dims. Have auto iris set to low. Probably turn off. The built in speakers are pretty good. Overall I like the performance. Use it mostly for streaming. If like me depends on the the speed of the connection.

Yes it would be possible. The projector can do both ceiling mount or table top.
