Nikon NIKKOR Z 24mm f/1.8 S Overview

Complementing the lens itself, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24mm f/1.8 S Lens with UV Filter Kit from B&H bundles the wide-angle prime with a 72mm UV filter.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 24mm f/1.8 S Lens

Presenting a wide field of view and an optimized design, the NIKKOR Z 24mm f/1.8 S from Nikon is a versatile wide-angle lens well-suited to a range of subjects, including landscape, architecture, and reportage. Featuring an advanced optical layout, this prime lens incorporates a series of aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements, which produce sharp, well-corrected imagery with a high degree of clarity. Also, both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings are used to suppress flare and ghosting for greater color fidelity and higher contrast.

Complementing the optical design, a multi-focus system, which employs two stepping motors, helps to realize impressively fast, accurate, and quiet focus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to suit both stills and video needs. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Prime wide-angle lens is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field.
One extra-low dispersion element greatly reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
Four aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate focusing performance. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus qualities, that are well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

Chiaro Pro 72mm 98-UVATS UV Filter

The Pro 72mm 98-UVATS UV Filter is one of Chiaro’s highest-rated protective UV filters with 98% light transmission. It’s ideal for photographers of all levels who demand high-quality glass and other essential features for excellent image fidelity and construction.

To achieve 98% light transmission, Chiaro uses highly-polished optical glass, multi-coating, and additional advanced elements that improve the filter’s light transmission. A scratch-resistant coating minimizes scratching of the glass and helps assure that water, oil, dust, and fingerprints are removed with a gentle wipe. Its hard-anodized aluminum filter ring is designed to screw on and off effortlessly, and it is thin to prevent vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. Side knurling helps assure that you’ll have a firm grip when attaching or removing your filter.

Image quality is what matters most at Chiaro. The company has tested and combined many features and essentials to achieve superior image quality and the highest light transmission. To help take the confusion out of selecting a filter, Chiaro prominently displays the light transmission levels so that you can choose the perfect filter for your lens and photo session.

98% Light Transmission
Protecting your lens doesn't mean you have to lose optical quality. By using highly-polished optical glass and advanced coatings, Chiaro offers a 98% transmission rate, which is an excellent transmission rate for glass. And the company verifies the ratings with ISO certified lab testing.
Resistance Coating
The layers of advanced resistance coating on the filter are designed to resist moderate scratches, and allow you to easily clean your filter. Water beads up and rolls off your filter, and oil and fingerprints can come off with a gentle wipe. Dust and debris won't adhere to the filter and can be removed with a puff of air.
Polished Optical Glass
Glass that's polished to perfection is essential to achieve a high level of light transmission. The optical glass in this Chiaro filter is highly-polished for flatness that ensures excellent optical clarity.
Multi-coating enhances light transmission to the demanding level set for all Chiaro filters. It reduces unwanted internal reflections and ghosting that can compromise your images.
UV Protection
The filter blocks UV light and reduces the bluish cast of daylight that can affect color accuracy, especially at higher altitudes.
Hard Anodized Aluminum Construction
The process of hard anodizing toughens and strengthens the aluminum for a lightweight yet durable filter ring.
Slim Design
Measuring only 3.2mm, this filter is slim enough to use on wide-angle lenses without experiencing vignetting.
Top and Side Knurling
In addition to top knurling, Chiaro added side knurling to better grip the filter when you're attaching and removing it, or when you're stacking filters.
Secure Attachment
It takes two full turns to mount the filter on your lens. This feature will securely hold your Chiaro filter through the most demanding photo shoots.
Front Threads
The front threads on the filter allow you to stack filters by screwing them onto your Chiaro filter.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 24mm f/1.8 S Reviews

Pleasantly suprised

I read reviews that this lens was not as good as the other f/1.8 z lenses, but when I compare it to the 50 & 85 f/1.8 z lenses that I own I don't see much difference in quality. I'm not an authority, but I have been a Nikon user for over 30 years and I find that all of the z prime lenses that I own are the best I have ever used. I use them on a Z6ii and I can't wait for Nikon to make a mirrorless camera, that isn't over $5,000, that is of the same quality as these lenses.

Better lens than anything that came from f-mount in 24mm range. I bought 20mm at first, twice, but returned both times it as it was too large for going small and light. Nikkor z 24mm is much lighter and smaller package. Now I also need new filter system for this lens. Previously I used a Zeiss 28mm f2 zf2 with D800 from day one. And then upgrading to Z7 because of smaller and lighter body. And now I finally upgraded to a lighter and smaller lens also. Did I say I need new filters? I also have Z 50mm 1.8 and Z 85 1.8 lenses but 24 mm remains my main use lens for about 90% of the shots.

Excellent wide-angle prime

I really enjoy the 24-mm field of view. It is pleasing to the eye in my opinion, and it is still very practical. I am always struggling to decide if I prefer 24mm or 35mm for a wider field of view over 50mm. But anyway, this lens is fantastic. It is incredibly sharp, and although I use this to shoot stills, the autofocus is fast and accurate. There is distortion on the outer areas of the frame, which is to be expected. I do not consider myself to be a pixel-peeper by any means, but I have noticed far less chromatic aberration, as compared to the 24mm f/2.8 Ai-S, which I was previously using.

Great for lowlight shooting.

The kit zoom with my Z6 II is really good but I wanted something for lowlight shooting. Lowlight at a wide angle is something I like to do at night. Lens is sharp and crisp. I'm very happy with it. It was packed well and shipped fast.

My favorite lens!

Fabulous in every way -- especially the silent, smooth and accurate focusing (coupled with the Nikon Z6) for video shooting.

When image quality tops the list...

I wanted this lens primarily for landscape and astrophotography. I realized pretty quickly that it is also highly effective for other applications, including interesting portraits and street shots. The sharpness, contrast, and color rendering are all fantastic. The autofocus (paired with the Z7) is excellent even when shooting at dawn or dusk. The build-quality is certainly sufficient, but is not quite as impressive as the image quality. But, it feels solid, lightweight, and has an easy to manipulate focus ring. If you're not familiar, it may take a bit of time to get use to the electronic focus, but after a few days it's no problem at all. This will be my go-to lens for long-exposure landscape and Milky Way shots. So glad I invested in it.

Since there is no focus indicator on the lens how do you know when you're at infinity when using manual focus?
Asked by: Matt
There will be a focus scale that appears on the LCD of Nikon Z cameras, so it would be easy to see if the NIKKOR Z 24mm f/1.8 S Lens is focused to infinity.
