Nikon NIKKOR Z 20mm f/1.8 S Overview

An ultra-wide field of view along with a sleek form factor, the NIKKOR Z 20mm f/1.8 S from Nikon is a versatile prime well-suited to a range of subject types, from architecture to interiors to landscapes. An advanced optical design uses aspherical and ED elements to produce sharp, well-corrected imagery with high clarity and color accuracy, and both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings are also used to suppress flare and ghosting for greater color fidelity and higher contrast.

Complementing the optical design, a multi-focus system, which employs two stepping motors, helps to realize impressively fast, accurate, and quiet focus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to suit both stills and video needs. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Prime wide-angle lens is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 30mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field.
Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate focusing performance. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus qualities, that are well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 20mm f/1.8 S Reviews

Great lens for low light photography

Just used this lens for morning sunrise shooting. Because of its wide aperture, I was able to quickly lower iso for ideal exposure.

I like the size, weight and performance numbers.

Got this for night photography. Nice that it's not too gigantic or heavy. The focal length and aperture are what I'm after. I haven't shot with it yet, but I'm sure the image quality will be fine considering all the rave reviews it gets in that department. I like the immediate service from B&H and the tax credit from their Payboo card:-) I normally add a magnetic filter adapter to my lenses for ease of switching to a polarizer or ND filter, but for this lens I only plan night photos and I'll just leave the UV filter on for protection. Nice that B&H gives us this UV filter as a free add-on, too.

Expensive lens but worth the price.

AT f/1.8 it is very sharp at center. Sharpness drops just a little at the corners. Stopping it down to f/2.8 improve center sharpness. At f/4 it has perfect sharpness corner to corner. Turning in-camera corrections off, there is a moderate amount of vignetting and barrel distortion which improves a bit at f/2.8 and remains the same after that. Here are a few points to consider: Focusing ring is very smooth. It is focus-by-wire and not mechanically coupled with the optical elements. So, no focus distance marking on the lens. Auto focus is fast and responsive even at low light Screw-on filters can mounted in front of the lens (77mm) Focus breathing is very small Good flair control Coma is very small at the corners, good for Astro photography Excellent sharpness across the image No image stabilization on the lens Overall, highly recommended

Sharp. No Coma.

This lens is amazing for landscapes and astrophotography. I took it on our last vacation to Maine and got some amazing shots with it. Looking forward to taking it to Glacier/Yellowstone hopefully next year. It's super sharp and there is almost little to no coma in the stars. I had a canon rebel t6 before I switched over to my mirrorless Nikon Z6ii, worth every penny and what a world of difference. So glad I made the switch and decided to go with this lens.

Purple and green fringing galore

Though this lens is sharp and has good rendering of the image, it also is prone to longitudinal chromatic aberrations. My copy seems to have a LOT of it, especially at f1.8. Some research online reveals these lenses are very prone to produce very high levels of purple/green fringing in high contrast areas like tree branches.

Fantastic Lens!

The Nikon Z 20mm F1.8 lens is a lens that will always be in my camera bag. It has incredible sharpness with no distortion across the field of view. I highly recommend this Nikon glass for anyone needing this focal length for landscape or astrophotography work.

Have any of you tested this Z 20 mm prime (or the Z 24 mm 1.8) to the 20 mm on the Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S Lens, particularly for astro images? I'm a big fan of the old Ai-S 20 mm and 24 mm lenses and am wondering if the 20 mm and 24 mm focal distances on the zoom are as good, or nearly as good as the new Z primes of the same focal lengths. I'm debating between the primes and the zoom. Thanks for your time, Andy

We have not tested the lenses side by side for optical performance but based on customer feedback so far, more people are using the 20mm f1.8 for astrophotography than the 14-24mm.

How does this lens compare with the Zeiss Milvus 21mm f/2.8 lens? (I realize the Zeiss is manual focus and requires an FTZ converter for use on Nikon mirrorless, and these are not factors for me.)
Asked by: Michael
I do love this lens. I cannot provide you comparisons with the Zeiss that I don't own - but I can also tell you from the guy that I follow (Hudson Henry Photography) and my amateur experience that this lens is extremely sharp edge to edge. I have been amazed. My only disappointment has been my own errors in making poor f-stop choices a few times (field of flowers). Unfortunately B&H doesn't allow us to have a link to Flickr pictures - nor upload examples that I can find. I wish you luck in whichever lens you choose! I also must say I LOVE the fact that it opens up to 1.8!
