A one-lens solution for working in a wide variety of shooting situations, the NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR from Nikon is an all-in-one 8.3x zoom covering wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths. An advanced optical design, which uses a series of aspherical and ED elements, pairs with both ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coatings to produce sharp and clear image quality with high contrast and accurate color rendering to benefit working in various lighting conditions.

The impressive zoom reach is also benefitted by Vibration Reduction image stabilization, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to 5 stops for sharper handheld shooting. A stepping motor provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override to suit both stills and video applications. Also, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

All-in-one zoom covers wide-angle to telephoto fields of view and is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras, however, can also be used with DX cameras where it will provide a 36-300mm equivalent focal length range.
Two aspherical elements and one aspherical ED element is used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction. A Super Integrated Coating is also featured on multiple elements to help ensure consistently accurate colors.
Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to 5 stops for sharper handheld shooting.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

I was hesitant to buy this lens at first but I needed a little more reach for traveling. I had a Nikon 24-70mm but it just didn't have the reach I was hoping for, so I bought the 24-120 that served me well for many years. I recently purchased a Nikon Z9 and with a couple of the larger zoom telephotos coupled with the Z9, I found that this old man just couldn't carry that camera coupled with a big telephoto around for any length of time. I recently purchased the 24-200mm lens and thought I would try it around the neighborhood before heading to Europe on vacation. I also have a Nikon D850 and was contemplating using that camera because of the weight difference but really wanted to use the Z9. Well, I think the Z9 with the 24-200mm is a match made in heaven. The combination is not as heavy as I thought it would be and the 24-200mm is razor sharp. The rotation of the lens barrel is smooth and solid and is really a sleeper of a perfect lens. The extra reach I get from this lens is perfect for me. What I can't get as far as extra distance, I can make up for in post processing. I don't regret for a second purchasing this lens and can't wait for my next vacation.

I was finally able to try out this lens on the Nikon Z50. This fall I'm going on a vacation where I will be limited on the gear I can take and I'm hoping this combo will do the trick. While it won't match the equipment I'd otherwise grab, I think this will work out.

Best All Purpose Lens for Z50 Camera

I bought the Nikon Z50 with the 2 kit lenses (16-50, 50-250) and I found out that they were limited. The small one was too small and it was like looking through a periscope. The Large lens was the one that I was using almost all the time because of better optics but it was not practical for closer shots. Also, I did not like the fact that you had to turn the lenses each time to unlock them because there was a small time delay before the lens became active. The optics for the small lens was not as good as the large lens. I know that the kit lenses were designed to be light and OK for all shots. But in the end I needed a more professional type of lens with good close-up and good long range shots. One thing that concerned me was the fact the large kit lens would emit a rattling noise when shook at little. I was told that was designed by the factory to satisfy the VR requirement. The new 24-200 Lens has no such rattle and I can set the camera for VR anyway. The new lens operates fast and has a solid feel to it. The optics seem be a little better than the large kit lens too. It is easy to grab, hold, zoom and shoot. I wish that there was a special kit package that combined the Z50 with the 24-200 lens at the time I bought the camera. The Z50 is eventually going to be the backup camera. I hope to buy the Z7 II as a the primary camera so the lens would be good fit for the Z7 II. Other lenses will have to follow for special shots.

The 24-120 is my "go-to" daily zoom...remarkable lens. I bought the 24-200 for traveling - for that extra reach. I know its length does not compare to a super zoom, but given the large sensor of the Z7ii I have some cropping room. It did quite well on my first walk around shooting landscape in local park. I was impressed with the sharpness of some of my photos. I will report back after I give it a real workout in Arizona.

I've had this lens for 1.5 years and love it. I love the versatility of a zoom especially when when carrying multiple lenses may not be an option - like hiking or traveling. This lens, at a fraction of the weight/size and price of the 70-200mm f/2.8, made sense for me. I was pleasantly surprised by its sharpness and, even though it's not the fastest lens, I've been able to shoot handheld in lower-light with the Z6 with no problems. I've hiked all over with it and taken it on several city trips - it fits in a purse and isn't so conspicuous that you feel weird pulling it out when everyone else is using an iphone. Photos for reference: Marmot - versatility of reach at 64mm & 200mm; Mountains/Lake - pretty sharp at f/11; Waterfall - handheld at 1/20s (F/11, ISO 100); Moose - handheld at 1/500s (f/6.3, ISO 3200); Chipmunk - bokeh at f/8, 200mm.

This lens is light, sharp, and has a useful range of focal lengths to take on a hike. It's focal lengths are also great for parties and, given today's cameras (e.g. Z5) it is even useful at gatherings without a flash.

B&H description reads: "pairs with both ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coatings" whereas at Nikon's web site it says it only has ARNEO (Anti Reflection coating) but not Nano coating (internal Antireflection coatings for inner optical elements). So Arneo plus Nano or just Arneo coating?

Why is the aperture range so limited/bad, compared to say af-s 28-300 f3.5-5.6? They say z mount offers more light to come in, so why this lens is so poor;y designed?

The diameter of the mount is only indirectly related to the amount of light that gets to the sensor. A wide mount provides engineers with more flexibility and fewer limitations in their optical designs which, in turn, permits the creation of very wide aperture lenses. It does not dictate that all Z-mount lenses have wide apertures. The 24-400 was designed for use cases where small size is more important than wide apertures.

How does this compare to AF-S 28-300 f3.5-5.6 if I wants an all purpose travel lens to go with Z6-II?

Compared to the 28-300mm lens this one is much sharper, faster focus and slightly smaller and lighter. It will also be a direct mount onto the Z 6II, so you would not need an adapter.
