For the professional image-maker who needs resolution, speed, and video capabilities, the Canon EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera features a newly developed 45MP CMOS sensor, which offers 8K raw video recording, 12 fps continuous shooting with a mechanical shutter, and is the first EOS camera to feature 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization.

Beyond just resolution, the sensor also pairs with the refined DIGIC X image processor to usher in a new generation of Dual Pixel CMOS AF for quick, smooth, and intelligent focusing performance using 1053 selectable points that cover the entire field of view. This focusing system has also been updated to make use of Deep Learning technology for improved subject tracking as well as precise eye, face, and head-detection for both people and animals.

Complementing the imaging assets, the R5, while sporting a new design, also feels familiar to EOS 5-series users. An especially high-resolution 0.5" 5.76m-dot electronic viewfinder provides a realistic 120 fps refresh rate while the 3.2" rear touchscreen LCD monitor sports a vari-angle design to accommodate vlogging needs as well as benefit working from high and low angles. A top status LCD makes for an intuitive workflow and the camera also incorporates dual memory card slots—one CFexpress Type B, one SD UHS-II—along with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless connectivity.

45MP Full-Frame Sensor and DIGIC X Processor
Built around a newly developed 45MP full-frame CMOS sensor, the EOS R5 offers both high-resolution stills and video output and the fine-tuned DIGIC X image processor complements this with a wealth of speed. Sensitivity from ISO 100-51200, which can be expanded to ISO 102400, suits working in a variety of lighting conditions while quick continuous shooting up to 12 fps with a mechanical shutter, or silent 20 fps with an electronic shutter, is ideal for working with moving subjects.
8K30 Raw and 4K120 Video Recording
Benefitting more than just stills, the 45MP full-frame sensor also enables impressively high-resolution DCI 8K 30 fps raw video recording internally along with 4K recording up to 120 fps in 4:2:2 10-bit with Canon Log. HDR-PQ recording is possible, too, in-camera HDR production and external recording, via the HDMI port supports a clean 4K output at up to 60 fps. Both All-I and IPB compression options are available, along with the ability to use Dual Pixel CMOS AF when shooting at up to 8K raw.
HDMI 8K Raw Output to Atomos Ninja V+
Firmware update 1.4.0 adds the ability to output 8K30, 10-bit video for ProRes raw recording to the Atomos Ninja V+ recorder over an optional HDMI cable. (Please note, the recorder may become hot.)
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
An updated Dual Pixel CMOS AF II features 1053 selectable focusing points, which cover approximately 100% of the image frame for wide and even coverage. This focusing system offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. This system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery.

Subject tracking has also been benefitted through the use of Deep Learning technology, which helps to gradually refine the focusing system's ability to quickly and accurately recognize both people and animal subjects. This technology also supports the more refined eye, face, and head detection functions, for both people and animals, that are well-suited for portraiture applications.
Sensor-Shift Image Stabilizer
A first for EOS cameras, the R5 incorporates five-axis sensor-shift image stabilization that compensates for up to an impressive eight stops of camera shake for truly effective compensation of camera shake to suit handheld shooting with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system also works in concert with lens-based optical image stabilization for both native RF lenses and adapted EF lenses.
Body Design and Wireless Connectivity
  • High-resolution 5.67m-dot 0.5" electronic viewfinder provides a bright and detailed means for eye-level viewing and the quick 120 fps refresh rate offers natural motion rendering for a more realistic viewfinder experience.
  • Rear 3.2" 2.1m-dot LCD touchscreen features a vari-angle design that benefits front-facing recording, such as for vlogging needs, as well as working from high and low shooting angles.
  • Top status LCD can be used to quickly review camera and shooting settings.
  • CFexpress Type B and SD UHS-II memory card slots are featured for flexible storage needs; the CFexpress slot is ideal for 8K video and high-speed, high-resolution burst shooting needs while the SD card slot retains a familiar form factor for wide compatibility.
  • Both a 3.5mm headphone and a 3.5mm external microphone port are featured for improved audio monitoring and recording capabilities.
  • Refined body design incorporates four distinct control dials across the body for intuitive tactile control and a joystick controller is used on the back of the camera for fast and intuitive focus point selection and menu navigation.
  • Durable, weather-sealed body design is built to handle tough working conditions and inclement weather.
  • Both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi bands are available for fast file transferring to a mobile device and Bluetooth is also available to provide constant device connection via the Canon Camera Connect app.

I enjoy nature photography and crop a good deal. I initially purchased the original R6 but found that when I performed deep cropping, the R5 performed significantly better. Both the original R5 and R6 performed about the same when I did not crop my photos. I decided to return the R6 and purchase an R5. At the end of the day both are great cameras. I have not compared the R5 with the new R6. The R5 is really meeting all of my requirements and works great with my legacy EF glass. The R5 and R6 are a significant upgrade from my R body.

Incredible Camera for Commercial Photography

I just recently purchased this camera and have been loving it more and more each day. I upgraded from the Canon 6D and wow, what a change. Everything from the touch LCD screen to the insane 20 FPS, it's been an incredible piece of equipment. One thing to note is that I ordered one R5 and it came with a couple very time hot spot/broken pixels on the LCD screen. I returned it to B&H for an exchange and the same thing happened with the second one. Not sure if others have come across this issue but just sharing my experience. It doesn't seem to cause have any issue with image quality but if you look close enough on the LCD screen, they might just be some. With a close to $4k camera, I wouldn't expect it but it happened twice. Overall, super happy with the images it produces and everything else that came along with it!

I've been dreaming about this camera body for literal years. I finally pulled the trigger and bought it to replace my 5D Mark IV as my primary body. I absolutely love it. For context, I shoot freelance for multi-day events and also do street / nightscape photography on the side. I've dabbled in video but haven't tried it at all on the r5 yet. The good: - The AF system is as good as advertised and even better than I expected. Eye tracking is such a game changer (thaaaank you Canon for finally implementing it), and the servo is so smooth and works well on subjects that are moving at a decent pace. My 5D4's servo couldn't keep up as well. - The in-body stabilization is suuuuuper nice. I only have the RF f/1.2 50mm lens so far, which doesn't have IS, so it's nice to have it built into the body. - I'm super impressed with its performance in harsh lighting. I shot at a California beach early on and was really happy with how it managed the bright sun - it wasn't really blown out at all. Attached a pic from that shoot for reference. - The body is super light and ergonomic. Feels really good to hold and handle. - The button mapping customization is amazing. The UI / UX as a whole is incredible. I set one button to subject tracking with AI servo and one button to single-point one shot AF. Sooo pleased with how easily I can set up the camera to do pretty much everything I want it to do. Profiles are also so nice for shooting events and swapping quickly between scenarios. - The start time is super quick. From OFF to ready-to-shoot is a couple seconds at most. Makes my 5D4 feel like it takes 2-3 business days to start up in comparison. - Sensor is CRAZZYYYY. It's HUGE. The details are never lost. I'm blown away. The not-so-great: - Like I said, I came from the 5D4, and I'm a die-hard OVF fan. So... not the biggest fan of the EVF, but that's personal preference. The fact that I'm able to turn off the auto EVF is fantastic, 'cause I kept triggering the EVF sensor with my thumb while trying to use the touch screen at times haha. - Battery life is super meh (relatively). I've grown accustomed to being able to keep the body on and idle while I shoot entire multi-day events and having the battery last for a while. Because of the EVF / necessity for screen tho, the r5's battery life just can't compare to my DSLR's, even with the E6NH battery. Sufficient for most shooting situations, but I'm not sure I could use it as my primary camera for long events without a battery grip or a million extra batteries. - Again, personal preference, but the OFF / ON switch is in a flipped / opposite orientation compared to my 5D4, which just throws me off hahaha. I plan to shoot with both cameras at events and I just know that's gonna give me headaches. Not the biggest deal tho Overall, the pros faaaar outweigh the cons. I'm extremely pleased with this purchase. It met my soaring high expectations with ease and even surpassed them. If you're hesitating, just pull the trigger. Shoot. (;

Does the R5 have "Custom Quick Controls", which were on the mode dial of the 5D Mark IV such as C1, C2, C3? If so, how many are on there and where are these found?
Asked by: Lance
I'm answering my own question here, but both the R5 and R6 have C1, C2, and C3 "Custom Quick Controls" on each. On the R6, it's on the main Mode Dial that you turn on the right hand side of the viewfinder, and on the R5, it's changed with the Mode button on the LCD screen on the right side of the viewfinder.

The 8k raw video recording mode specifies a write speed of 2600 mb/s yet the fastest media that Im seeing can only do 1500 mb/s... so how do we record 8k raw?
Asked by: Jacy
The cards are MB/s which means megabytes per second. The camera is lower case mb/s which means megabits per second. Therefore the camera is only producing 325 megabytes per second so the write speed of the card is roughly 5 times faster than needed.

I don't use my R5 for video. Is there any point (other than duplicating images/overflow use) of using the more expensive CFFAST memory card?
Asked by: Anonymous
It will allow the camera to shoot longer without filling the buffer, the CF Express card (It does not use CFast) is also more durable and reliable than an SD card. The read and write speeds of a CF Express is substantially faster also.
