Canon R6 Overview

Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera for Photographers and Video Content Creators
Delivering incredible performance at speeds up to 12 fps, the EOS R6 camera from Canon can capture the split-second details between a subject's movements. This is great for dynamic action photos of athletes, animals, or vehicles in motion. The selectable electronic (silent) shutter mode can capture images at up to 20 fps, which is useful for wildlife photographers and photojournalists.
20MP Full-Frame Sensor and DIGIC X Processor
Built around a revised 20MP full-frame CMOS sensor, the EOS R6 offers modest resolution to complement a more manageable workflow, especially for those working with the web and small print forms as their final output. This sensor is paired with a fine-tuned DIGIC X image processor, which enables impressive stills and video capabilities, along with sensitivity from ISO 100-102400, which can be expanded up to ISO 204800.
4K60 and Full HD 120 Video Recording
Beyond stills, the 20MP sensor also affords UHD 4K video recording at up to 60 fps, along with Full HD at 120 fps for slow-motion playback. Both formats can be recorded internally at 4:2:2 10-bit and both Canon Log and HDR-PQ are supported for greater control over color rendering, and to suit high dynamic range output. Additionally, Dual Pixel CMOS AF is supported for all recording settings and external recording, via the HDMI port, enables clean 4K output to an optional external recorded.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
An updated Dual Pixel CMOS AF II features 1053 selectable focusing points, which cover approximately 100% of the image frame for wide and even coverage. This focusing system offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. The system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, the Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery.

Subject tracking has also been benefitted through the use of Deep Learning technology, which helps to gradually refine the focusing system's ability to quickly and accurately recognize both people and animal subjects. This technology also supports the more refined eye, face, and head detection functions, for both people and animals.

Sensor-Shift Image Stabilizer
A first for EOS cameras, the R6 incorporates five-axis sensor-shift image stabilization that compensates for up to an impressive eight stops of camera shake for truly effective compensation to suit handheld shooting with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system also works in concert with lens-based optical image stabilization for both native RF lenses and adapted EF lenses.
Body Design
  • High-resolution 3.69m-dot 0.5" electronic viewfinder provides a bright and detailed means for eye-level viewing and the quick 120 fps refresh rate offers natural motion rendering for a more realistic viewfinder experience.
  • Rear 3.0" 1.62m-dot LCD touchscreen features a vari-angle design that benefits front-facing recording, such as for vlogging needs, as well as working from high and low shooting angles.
  • Refined body design incorporates four distinct control dials across the body for intuitive tactile control and a joystick controller on the back of the camera offers fast and intuitive focus point selection and menu navigation.
Dual Storage Card Slots and Wireless Connectivity
  • Dual SD UHS-II memory card slots are featured for flexible storage needs.
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi is available for fast file transferring to a mobile device and Bluetooth is present to provide constant device connection via the Canon Camera Connect app.
  • A 3.5mm headphone port and separate 3.5mm external microphone port are featured for improved audio monitoring and recording capabilities.
Impressive Durability
  • Comfortable and solid in the hand, the exterior of the EOS R6 is made of lightweight and rigid polycarbonate resin, while the internal structure is mainly magnesium alloy to enhance body durability while shielding the camera from electromagnetic radiation and heat. It also has a tempered front panel for internal rigidity.
  • Durable, weather-sealed body design is built to handle tough working conditions and inclement weather. Sealing materials are used in critical areas like the buttons, the terminal covers, the battery compartment, and the card slot cover. Precise design and construction help minimize accidental penetration of dust and moisture in the rest of the camera body.
Canon EOS EF-Mount Lens Compatibility
Most Canon EOS EF-mount type lenses can be used on Canon EOS RF-mount camera bodies with the use of the required Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, which is separately available.
Firmware Version 1.5.1, Released Feb 2022
  • Fixes an issue where in rare instances, the camera may become inoperable when shooting in the Servo AF setting while operating the AF-ON button.

Canon R6 Reviews

Workhorse

I mainly use my camera to capture high school sports and if you know anything about high school sports, it's that the lighting is horrid, but this is where the R6 absolutely performs. I have comfortably captured baseball games at night while being in 5000+ ISO and still have delivered fantastic shots. Or indoor wrestling, in a poorly lit gym, with bodies being contoured in every way imaginable and having to wait for that split second when the wrestler breaks free, puts on a hold, or gets the pin, again this camera delivers. The autofocus is fantastic. It nails shot after shot and I'm usually stuck in post trying to select my favorite because it rarely misses.

After much research, great choice

I've been a Canon shooter for many years, currently using a T5i and a 6D. They have been great but after spending months researching new bodies and weighing out the cost and features of each this was the winner. The reduction of noise at higher ISO's, faster shooting speeds for wildlife, IBIS, and eye tracking were all factors in my decision. It has proven to me to be exactly what I was looking for.

So far so good.

So far so good, I've had the R6 for less than a month but am pleased so far. Only concern/problem was during an outdoor sports event the camera became overheated and would not shoot until it cooled down. I was in direct sunlight and had been shooting for over an hour. Still learning, more in-depth review sometime later. Pleased with the camera.

Absolutely love!

Im a major canon lover and I decided to purchase the r6 so i could have a second camera to shoot with. Its a little bit lighter then my Canon 5D Mark IV and the quality of the camera is amazing. Its quick and the face tracking is awesome.

wonderful upgrade, sadly defective

Moving from a 7D mkii to an R6 mki, this camera has blown me away with all of the improvements - speed, focus points (number and spread), full frame imagery, etc. etc. It's certainly not a cheap upgrade - I miss my battery grip and at some point I hope to get one for the R6. I put my extra cash into an adapter so I can use my old Canon lenses, instead. And then I put more cash into shipping my few months old camera to Canon to have them repair my camera after the SD Card Slot 2 stopped functioning. If there is a card in the slot the camera takes over a minute to boot up, then says it can't read the card/I need to formate the card. Formatting the card fails.- but putting the card in slot 1 has the camera working normally and accessing the card without issue. So the camera is defective but I'm still out money to carefully ship my camera to Canon to be fixed. It will certainly make for an important caveat whenever people ask me about my camera.

Can't imagine shooting with anything else

I started my photography journey on a Canon EOS 70D. Last year when I decided I wanted to turn photography into a business, I made the jump to a Canon EOS R and loved it. Then, I started booking weddings and needed a camera with a double card slot. I had done lots of research and decided I wanted to go with the R6, and it's been one of the best decisions for my business. It took a a couple of shoots to get used to it, but now that I'm used to my R6 I can't ever imagine shooting on anything else! I LOVE the fact that you can change your ISO, aperture, and shutter speed all with the turn of a dial. I love this camera and couldn't imagine using anything else.

Owned the R6 now for just over a year. Takes amazing pics when paired with both EF and RF lenses.

I purchased the R6 for many reasons and after months of research and asking many questions. The faster shooting speeds, being able to shoot at higher ISO's with less noise, and eye tracking are all reasons to own this. I use this as my main camera body and I'll keep my T5i and 6D as backup. Great purchase, well worth it.
