Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM Overview

Covering a variety of telephoto focal lengths, the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM spans a short- to super-telephoto range within a sleek and portable form factor. The modest maximum aperture enables a relatively portable design that is well-suited to handheld, walkaround use and optical image stabilization also helps to steady photos and videos by up to five stops when working in difficult lighting conditions. This lens is also characterized by its advanced optical design, which includes a series of Super UD and UD elements to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for a degree of clarity and color accuracy.

Balancing the distinguished optical assets is the Dual Nano USM focus system, which delivers fast, nearly silent autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. A unique Control Ring is also integrated into the lens design for intuitive control over exposure settings from the lens itself and the rotating zoom ring also feature torque adjustment for fine-tuning the feel of the lens. Additionally, this 100-500mm is weather-sealed and has a fluorine coating to protect the front and rear elements.

Versatile telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras.
Six UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) elements and one Super UD element help to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by five stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Three distinct IS modes are available: standard single-shot mode, a panning-optimized mode, and a mode that only activates the Image Stabilizer during the exposure.
Dual Nano USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and nearly silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.
Rotation-type zoom ring features torque adjustment capabilities to fine-tune the handling of the lens or to prevent the lens from accidentally extending.
Included lens hood features a side window to allow for easier adjustment of specialized rotating filters, such as polarizers, while the lens hood is attached.
Compatible with optional Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x teleconverters, when used within the 300-500mm range of the lens, to further extend the effective focal length range.

Excellent, as expected

This lens fully met my expectations, based on the excellent reviews. At least as sharp as the 100-400 II, smaller, and lighter.

I bought the 28-300L years ago. I loved it. It was an incredible lens. Then I moved to the 100-400, followed by the Mark II. The 100-400 II L was the best long zoom lens I've ever put on my camera. (Please read the full sentence, ZOOM, not fixed(prime)) Then technology changed, as did the prices of course, and the new toys came out. I've had a 5DIII since it launched. In fact I had two. Once I made the switch to dual R6's I figured it was only fair to upgrade the glass, despite the fairly hefty price mark up. The 100-500 is by no means inexpensive. Nothing Canon makes in the L range is inexpensive. However, if you're using top quality glass and the highest end full frame products, most who use them are professionals who make their money using the gear so the expensive part fades away quicker than for most. The photos are tack sharp. The extra 100mm is great, and the lens is lightweight. However, don't expect this lens to be small like the new RF 70-200. It's massive. It's as big as the 100-400 but feels a lot lighter. So far I've shot dance retcitals on it, and when the lighting is right, it allows for incredible closeups. I did buy this strictly to take to Alaska, so I will be shooting wildlife with it. If you have the money, purchase it. Think 100-400II plus less weight and even more quality improvement. I love all the features. I'm excited to toss on the new extender to see how that comes out.

RF 100-500, everything an L lens should be

Sold my EF 100-400 rev 2 lens to help pay for the RF 100-500. I had read nothing but good reviews. Like many reviews suggest, I've taken off the tripod ring mount, and shoot handheld with an R5. With the image stabilization, I've had a great time shooting birds & BIF. Like several reviews mention, even with the friction ring on Tight, the lens still creeps out when held down. Takes a bit of getting used to, but is not a show stopper.

Fatal flaw

Overall I like the lens and the quality of the images. Very light and rides very comfortably with a Loma Labs sling. However, paired with the R5 I find it usually fails to focus on close subjects. Very frustrating, as the close minimum focus is a main selling point for this lens. When the lens fails you have to focus manually before the auto focus kicks in again. To add insult to injury the focus ring is very small and set very far back such that by the time I get the focus working again, my subject has flown away.

Coupled with my R3 this took fantastic shots. Enough so I am considering selling my EF 200-400 F4. Very pleased!

This lens unfortunately does not fit your EOS 5D SR camera. Your 5D uses the EF moniker lenses, while this lens here is a RF lens designed for Canon Full Frame Mirrorless cameras only.

Hello, I am interested in the weight difference between 100-400 L IS II and 100-500 RF. Normally, "larger" lenses are heavier than shorter ones?
Asked by: Marek
The 100-400 is an EF lens. The 100-500 is a RF lens made for Canons mirrorless cameras like the R5 just released. There is not an adaptor to fit the new RF lenses to Canons DSLRs, 5D, 1D etc. They are generally smaller and lighter and more expensive! There is an adaptor to fit EF lenses on the some of the mirrorless cameras. Do your research and read carefully or ask your friendly B&H service person.

I understand your statement that with an extender, the zoom would be between 420-700 and 600-1000. Does that mean you would lose the use of the 100-200mm range, if you have an extender on?
Asked by: Kim
Actually you lose use of the 100mm - 420mm range, or 100mm - 600mm range -- depending on which extender you have attached.
