Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

Covering a variety of telephoto focal lengths, the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM spans a short- to super-telephoto range within a sleek and portable form factor. The modest maximum aperture enables a relatively portable design that is well-suited to handheld, walkaround use and optical image stabilization also helps to steady photos and videos by up to five stops when working in difficult lighting conditions. This lens is also characterized by its advanced optical design, which includes a series of Super UD and UD elements to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for a degree of clarity and color accuracy.

Balancing the distinguished optical assets is the Dual Nano USM focus system, which delivers fast, nearly silent autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. A unique Control Ring is also integrated into the lens design for intuitive control over exposure settings from the lens itself and the rotating zoom ring also feature torque adjustment for fine-tuning the feel of the lens. Additionally, this 100-500mm is weather-sealed and has a fluorine coating to protect the front and rear elements.

Versatile telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras.
Six UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) elements and one Super UD element help to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by five stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Three distinct IS modes are available: standard single-shot mode, a panning-optimized mode, and a mode that only activates the Image Stabilizer during the exposure.
Dual Nano USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and nearly silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.
Rotation-type zoom ring features torque adjustment capabilities to fine-tune the handling of the lens or to prevent the lens from accidentally extending.
Included lens hood features a side window to allow for easier adjustment of specialized rotating filters, such as polarizers, while the lens hood is attached.
Compatible with optional Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x teleconverters, when used within the 300-500mm range of the lens, to further extend the effective focal length range.

Lens works very well with my EOS R7. I'm getting very sharp pictures of birds both near and far.

Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1

Would rate it 4.5 if I could. This is an excellent mid range zoom lens, The image quality is good. It's light weight and not bulky so it's perfect for travel. The only issue that I encountered was the focusing, sometimes it need manual help to find the target in case of a complicated background (which is not such big a issue with the old EF 100-400mm f/5.6 lens)

Great lens (even for the price)

Yes, it's pricey--but the image quality is fantastic! Relatively slow aperture is not a problem since the R6 the I use it with allows me to bump the ISO a bit to compensate with virtually no loss of quality. One disappointment is the collar cannot be tightened enough to prevent a little slippage if the camera is bumped any more than a little.

an Amazing Lenses!!

It is light(!!!),Fast(!), accurate, SHARP, and very versatile. I shut far, I shut closeup, portrait, wildlife, landscape, and candid with it, and it excels in each and every one of them. I used other long lenses, but this one is just on a league of it's own, a whole new level. It is expensive as hell! by far my most expensive lenses ever. but you can carry it for a long day out in nature. and it will never fail you! tracking birds in flight, finding little bugs around, or taking an occasional portrait. a bigger aperture would make it perfect, but if the cost is an extra two pounds, then i prefer it just the way it is!

Handheld to 1/6sec, You've got to be kidding!

I'd recently purchased an R7 after using Canon gear all the way back to the AE-1. I was completely satisfied with my EF lenses and bodies so I waiting till Sep '22 to join the mirrorless team. The R7 was worth the wait (and more than worth the price). Paired with this RF 100-500L the combination is a beast with remarkable AI eye tracking auto focus that is the fastest I've ever encountered (the reviews are telling the truth!!) Despite the higher than expected f/4.5-7.1for an L-Series zoom when combined with nearly noiseless ISO 6400 you can obtain amazing low light indoor shots and with any reasonable outdoor lighting there are zero issues. The auto focus is fast, accurate, and follows the eyes of a selected subject effortlessly between all sorts of distractions. After using my other EF Ls on the R7 for a month with an adapter I finally sent a box of a dozen back to the B&H used department and converted to all RF lenses including this 100-500 and the synergistic performance is unbelievable (routinely solid handheld at reasonable zooms down to 1/6sec... wouldn't believe it if I hadn't just done it today, several times). It's fantastic that the EF-RF adapters work so well to protect our glass investments but seriously consider taking the RF leap and enjoying all the fun and ease of a complete system doing the heavy lifting for you. Absolutely nothing negative to say about the lens other than the price but I have zero regrets and can recommend it without hesitation! If you loved your legendary EF 100-400 IS USM II you will be beyond thrilled with the function, size, and weight of this lens.

Exeptional lens

I've used this lens for a few months now, and its amazing. The image quality is exceptional. The lens is extremely sharp, the only lens I've used which was sharper is the rf100L. The autofocus is very fast, great for tracking birds in flight. The bokeh is very smooth and color rendition is great as well. The build quality is good too, I've used it in rain and it never fogged up.

Flexibility & Reach

I have upgraded from the Canon 80D paired with either the Canon 300mm f4 or the Sigma 150-600mm C lens to the Canon R7 which I now use with this lens. This lens can achieve what both of those lenses could do individually: it focuses closer than the Canon and focuses more quickly and accurately (more often) than the Sigma. In addition, it pairs well with the 1.4 extender thereby allowing you to extend it's reach beyond the Sigma's 600mm.

Versatile, sharper than expected and very compact for its size. A little slow on the long end and wish extenders could be used throughout its range but overall a great buy

I have a Canon EOS 5D SR camera. Will this lens go with my camera?
Asked by: Susi
This lens unfortunately does not fit your EOS 5D SR camera. Your 5D uses the EF moniker lenses, while this lens here is a RF lens designed for Canon Full Frame Mirrorless cameras only.

What type of epoxy to use to permanently close the hood door for filters? Mine keeps opening and I don't use it
Asked by: Cathy
I would not recommend any epoxy for the hood at it could be permanent. If you start using a polarizer or variable ND, you might be glad for the door. I would recommend a small piece of tape or a rubber band.

Hello, I am interested in the weight difference ...

Hello, I am interested in the weight difference between 100-400 L IS II and 100-500 RF. Normally, "larger" lenses are heavier than shorter ones?
Asked by: Marek
The 100-400 is an EF lens. The 100-500 is a RF lens made for Canons mirrorless cameras like the R5 just released. There is not an adaptor to fit the new RF lenses to Canons DSLRs, 5D, 1D etc. They are generally smaller and lighter and more expensive! There is an adaptor to fit EF lenses on the some of the mirrorless cameras. Do your research and read carefully or ask your friendly B&H service person.
