Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM Overview

Combining a short-telephoto field of view with a sleek design and close-focusing performance, the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM is a well-rounded lens for a range of subjects, from portraits to macro subjects. Portrait-length prime is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless digital cameras.
Modest-but-bright f/2 maximum aperture maintains an overall sleek form factor while also benefitting working in available lighting conditions.
Macro design benefits working with close-up subjects and provides a 1:2 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 1.15'.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to five stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Also, a Hybrid IS setting compensates for angular and shift-type camera movements to specifically benefit close-up shooting.
STM stepping motor offers fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance that is ideal for video recording as well as still shooting.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Absolutely love the lens! Great affordable price point. Value for the money is really good. Love getting nice portraits with it. Very comparable quality to the more expensive 85mm!

A little unexpected

A great lens, period. So why A little unexpected? Don't get me wrong a great lens. It surprised me in that I was expecting maybe a little smaller footprint from the lens. I use it daily. A quality, great lens. If you don't have it you should give it serious consideration.

I got this for photographing jewelry. The lens quickly had issues, I would get error codes and the image would constantly blip when image stabilization was turn on.

This is sincerely a GREAT lens. I'm super-picky and this is a rare keeper. My 16 and 50 1.8 are pretty good, but this one is remarkable. A rare very high recommendation.

Nice lens for the money!

Purchased the RF 85MM f2 just before Christmas. While I have only used it for a week, the rendering of the images I have taken are excellent. The images are sharp at F2 and the bokeh is very good to my eye. The only downside I noted is that the focus is a bit noisy, but it is quick and accurate on the R6. The reason I only gave 4 stars is the lack of a lens hood.

A great macro lens for my Canon R7

After trying out this lens on some close-up shots (couldn't really call them macro), I love this lens. It's auto focus works nicely, even though I mostly manual focus for macro, it's nice to have that option for other work. It's a wonderful lens for non-macro images as well. It's definitely a keeper!

A very good 85mm lens at a reasonable price

I agonized for a while before getting the RF 85mm f/2 macro. After all I had the excellent EF f/1.2 which I use for portraits etc. But the macro feature and the native mount for my R5 made the RF lens attractive. I have found it is sharp and has good bokeh at a reasonable price. It was worth it.

Does canon offer a true macro for the RF mount?

Does canon offer a true macro for the RF mount?
Asked by: James
If by "true macro" you mean having a magnification ratio of 1:1 or more, yes Canon does offer the RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM which has a 1.4X mag ratio. Interestingly, the 100mm Macro with 1.4X mag costs 1.4 X the price of the 85 mm.

The Canon ET-73 Lens Hood for Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS Lens is not compatible with the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM Lens. You need to get the Canon ET-77 Lens Hood. Here is the link: https://bhpho.to/3p5szN5

Is the aperture fixed at F2?
Asked by: Cesar
No, the largest maximum aperture of this lens is f/2 but its aperture can go lower (i.e. f/4, f/8, f/16, etc.) if necessary. Canon does not have the lowest possible aperture listed for this lens, and we do not have a sample or pre-production copy available for me to test, but I would assume it would at least go to f/22.

Does this lens focus closer when using manual focus than it does with auto-focus?
Asked by: Bill
This lens does include a focus range limiter that presets and limits focus to specified ranges. That can optimise focusing and prevent unnecessary "hunting" and delay when working in the "half-macro" range. The focus limiter settings are (1) "Full", (2) 20 inches to infinity, and (3) "Macro" 14 inches to 20 inches only.

The long, locking ET-77 hood is not included but is currently available for $49.95. You should also plan on adding a good, multi-coated 67 mm skylight (UV) filter to complete the package.

Asked by: Syed
Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM Lens does have fast autofocus and will work for fast moving sports well. It just does not have any zoom so not as flexible in framing compared to a 70-200 for instance.
