Combining a short-telephoto field of view with a sleek design and close-focusing performance, the RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM is a well-rounded lens for a range of subjects, from portraits to macro subjects. Its close focus design enables working with subject matter as close as 1.15' away with a 1:2 maximum magnification and the STM stepping motor affords impressively quiet and smooth autofocus performance and full-time manual focus override. Helping to create sharp imagery, the lens also features optical image stabilization, along with Hybrid IS, to suppress up to five stops of camera shake for cleaner, steadier shooting. A UD (Ultra low Dispersion) element is also used in the optical design to minimize aberrations and ensure clarity. Additionally, a configurable Control Ring lets you adjust exposure settings, including ISO, aperture, and exposure compensation, from the lens itself.

Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM Overview

Portrait-length prime is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless digital cameras.
Modest-but-bright f/2 maximum aperture maintains an overall sleek form factor while also benefitting working in available lighting conditions.
Macro design benefits working with close-up subjects and provides a 1:2 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 1.15'.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to five stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Also, a Hybrid IS setting compensates for angular and shift-type camera movements to specifically benefit close-up shooting.
STM stepping motor offers fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance that is ideal for video recording as well as still shooting.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

I want a fast aperature lens that give me an extremly shallow depth of field so is the f2 enough or should i look for more expensive lenses to get bigger apreture ??
Asked by: Mohamed
At a typical working distance for a 85 mm lens the depth of field at f/2 is very shallow and the more distant objects will be VERY defocused. See images in my review of this lens. At f/2 and a typical portrait distance of 5 ft. the zone in sharp focus is only 1.08 inches thick. For most head shots, I find I usually using f/2.8 or f/3.2 for best results. I rarely shoot this lens at f/2. The lens is fine at f/2, but with eye focus, I don't want noses and ears looking too soft. At 8 or 9 ft. f/2 is fine.

Why is this lens so slow in Video mode? Doesn't have time to focus on the child, even with all the fast tracking modes enabled (((
Asked by: Vadim
most of the time when a EF-RF lens is used for video on an SLR/ff mirror less the focus is cut in half for smooth focus pulls. ITS by design and its the body that slows the focus down in video :) Varago

Does this lens flare a lot compared to the Samyoung RF alternative?
Asked by: Anonymous
If you are comparing the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM lens to the Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 RF lens, I have not seen any reviews directly comparing these two lenses, and none aimed at comparing flare performance between the two lenses. That being said, both lenses do have coatings designed to reduce flare; Canon using their Super Spectra coating on the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM lens, and Samyang using their Ultra Multi-layer Coating on their Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 RF lens. That being said, it is rare for a prime lens with a large amount of glass to completely reduce the effect of flare in bright light conditions, and if aimed directly at the sun or a strong light source, flare can occur with both lenses. That being said, due to the lens' narrow angle of view, if you pay attention to the position of the sun (or other strong light source), it is fairly easy to avoid flare. That being said, the Samyang lens does come with a lens hood that also assists in reducing flare, while the Canon lens requires you to purchase the lens hood as a separate accessory.
