Rokinon Xeen CF 35mm T1.5 Overview

The Rokinon XEEN CF 35mm T1.5 Pro Cine Lens, in a Sony E-mount, features a lightweight carbon fiber housing and compact design while providing full-frame coverage for use with large sensor cameras. This lens supports resolutions up to 8K in a small and lightweight form, which is well suited for use with mechanical and electronic stabilizer systems, as well as for studio and location productions. The lenses in the XEEN CF series all benefit from X-Coating Technology, which provides the XEEN CF lenses with a distinct look. All lenses within the XEEN CF series are color-matched to avoid shifts when swapping lenses, and the 11-blade iris allows for a natural-looking bokeh.

In addition to supporting 8K image capture, the lenses have been designed for ease of use while shooting, with each lens sharing the same 95mm outside front diameter and consistent lens gear positions for focus and iris gears. This makes for fast lens swaps when working with rod-mounted lens accessories. Accurate focus and iris scales on both sides of the lens make it easy for your assistant to work from either side of the camera, and the 200° focus rotation allows for accurate lens markings without having too long a throw. The lens markings are large and easy to read and use luminous paint, which helps when shooting in dim or dark environments.

All the lenses in the XEEN CF series are tightly color-matched to the X-Coating Technology standard, for minimal color shift when switching between lenses
The lenses are color-optimized to reproduce accurate skin tones
The X-Coating Technology coatings provide protection from flare and ghosting for good contrast
The 11-blade iris creates round out-of-focus highlights for an image with natural-looking bokeh
Construction
Accurate focus and iris marking on both sides of the lens help avoid the duck and dive of your camera assistants when they are on the wrong side of the camera and have to check or set the lens before rolling the shot
The proprietary X-Coating Technology provides a sharp image while helping to reduce flares and ghosting

Rokinon Xeen CF 35mm T1.5 Reviews

Cleanest Glass I've Ever Used

As someone who has worked primarily with stills lenses, I can tell you upfront that this review will be biased, especially when it comes to usability. I won't get into all of the differences between stills and cine glass as there are dozens of videos and articles out there that cover it, but I can confirm that they all are telling the truth. If you want a fairly unbiased look at what these lenses can do, I recommend the No Film School and Shane Hurlbut deep dives exploring how these lenses function. With all that out of the way, I guess I can provide a few subjective pros and cons for my particular use case (i.e. short films and small crew documentaries). Pros - The 200 degree focus throw is perfect for single operator use. - When using the A7rIII (and other Sony Cameras) the color shift is negligible and, compared to my old Zeiss Batis lenses, actually quite nice. - Images are incredibly true to life. - I've noticed an improvement to the way my camera seems to render color contrast. Cons (for someone coming from stills glass) - Still quite a bit of breathing - Heavy (though considerably lighter than other cine lenses) - Bokeh seems to have less character, but in a way that complements video. All in all, this lens has made a noticeable difference to the images I'm able to produce. If you think your work could benefit from cinema lens functionality but you don't want to invest in a high-cost lens with a signature look, this is the cleanest and most flattering option I've come across.

Can this be sent in for an aftermarket mount ...

Can this be sent in for an aftermarket mount conversion? (e.g. E Mount to EF)
Asked by: Robert
no it can not. the differences in flange distances between the mounts makes this impossible the Sony E mount flange distance is 18mm the PL mount flange distance is 52mm, the lens is built to a 52mm flange distance and can not be changed to work on and 18mm flange. you can add an E mount to PL mount adapter to get the PL mount lens on an E mount camera.
