ProGrade Digital PGRWCFXXQDANA Reviews

Does Not Work with M1 Processor on Mac

If your workflow is done on a Mac, save yourself time and do not buy this product, unless you are using only CFb Express Cards, and there are less expensive and smaller CF express card readers out there. For XQD cards, you have to download a driver on to your computer, then unlock permissions, blah blah blah, jump through hoops and hope it works. Just buy something else.

DON'T BUY IT

Just bought and tried this product. I upgraded to a Nikon z9 but still have a LOT of xqd cards. I liked the download speed and flexibility this reader promoted and I could reduce one reader in my photo bag. Mistake. I can get the reader to read some of the XQD cards but not all (anything 128 or greater). I have to restart my computer to get the reader to be recognized. So....I dove into the online instructions (didn't come with paper of course). The instructions read like a 1990 manual. I had to go into security preferences and move files. Ridiculous. The manual didn't even have current screen shots for my up to date operating system. Why, in this day and age could you possible expect to need a new product driver upon receipt of the product? This isn't just an updated driver...it is a driver to read XQD cards. Then, upon reading this sales page at B&H, I see it is not 100% compatible with M1 mac computers! Why wasn't that at the top of the darn sales page???? I didn't open the specifications page and research what should be a simple card reader. This puppy is going back to B&H in a hurry. Very disappointing.

Won't work on M1 MAC Ultra, works great on Windows

I purchased a MAC M1 Ultra with Monterey OS and it wouldn't not register this drive and CFe card as removable. With your normal programs like Adobe Bridge it could not offload the photos from the CFExpress Card to my NAS since it wasn't registered as removable. I worked with Apple on it and Adobe and we couldn't get it to work. Apple Support response was it's working as designed since they don't support any non-apple 3rd party products at all. I would work directly offloading from the camera but would take overnight to offload a CFe Card. I returned the MAC since I only had it a day and purchased a Windows 11 machine with thunderbolt and it works flawlessly. Have had no issues with it since the swap.

Not compatible with M1

I am an owner operator out of Maryland, DC, and Virginia. I have the FX 9 camera package and just bought this to use with it. I know that this will perform beautifully with older model macs, but it is completely incompatible with the new Mac M1's. FYI

Previously, I had ProGrade's USB Type C card reader model PGRWCFXSDANA. While it worked fine, it took FOREVER to download files. Couldn't stand the wait. Finally decided to go with a Thunderbolt reader. Wow, what a difference. I downloaded 337gb of data from a Sony 512gb CFExpress Tough card. Using the old reader it took 25:54 minutes. Using this new Thunderbolt reader took only 8:34 for 4877 files. Of course, when I imported straight to Lightroom it took longer but was still just a fraction of the time that the old USB-C reader took. Have not used it with XQD so no experience there but with the CFExpress it is worth the extra money. Sizewise, it's big; about an inch larger on each side and 1/4 inch taller. I can live with the size considering the speed. Does not have an SD slot but I don't need one since I use a Thunderbolt dock that has an SD reader incorporated.

Thunderbolt can pull massive amounts of big files off my camera in barely seconds. It's almost hard to believe. This is the best way to make use of the super fast read speeds of CFExpress. This card reader feels well built, like a quality product.

Works until it doesn't

I used this for a year or more successfully on an intel mac with both SDXC cards and CFExpress. I've started running into issues once I purchased larger CFEXpress cards and also moved to an M1 macbook Pro. Not sure if its a mac os x compatibility issue, but it seems to be heat dispersion as far as I can tell. When I offload a full card, I can sometimes get a full transfer but it crashes the finder / offload app and requires a forced removal, and sometimes even a system crash. Further more I find the only way around it is to transfer a few small batches of files at a time letting everything cool down inbetween transfers, otherwise it crashes and / or write speeds tank to an incredibly slow speed, meaning hours for offload when it would originally be a few minutes for 500 gb of files. So this is a bit troublesome for such a crucial piece of gear handing files. So far the Sandisk, while bulky and large has handled the offloads without any of the same issues.
