Ultra-Wide Portable Prime
Presenting an ultra-wide field of view, the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G is a sleek and wide-eyed prime lens characterized by its portability, advanced optical design, and intuitive handling. It's an ideal companion for a range of subjects, from architecture and interiors to landscape to vlogging, and the sleek size makes it a go-to wide-angle option for everyday and travel shooting.
G Lens Series
  • Two AA (Advanced Aspherical) elements help to greatly reduce distortion and spherical aberrations in order to accurately render scenes with a high degree of sharpness.
  • Three extra-low dispersion elements reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
  • Nano AR Coating has been applied to minimize surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
  • Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and helps to maintain a relatively compact form factor.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Autofocus and Handling
  • Dual XD Linear Motor system, along with an internal focusing design, provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance that suits both photo and video applications.
  • Linear Response manual focus control offers more natural handling and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
  • Customizable focus hold buttons are present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.
  • Despite being an ultra-wide prime, the sleek design still accepts front 67mm threaded filters for easier creative control.
Compact, Portable Design
  • Weighing just 12.3 oz, this sleek lens is an ideal choice for vlogging and walk-around shooting applications, and makes a great companion to APS-C-format cameras and working with gimbals or accessory grips.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
  • Fluorine-coated front element resists dust, moisture, and fingerprints and is easy to clean.

Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Reviews

Mind-blowing quality and sharpness

It was a really hard choice to get this or the 24mm f/1.4 GM Lens, but I'm so happy I opted for this one. The sharpness on this lens is ridiculous, especially wide open at f/1.8 and corner to corner. I honestly can't believe how clean and detailed everything looks, it may be my favorite lens I've ever used and this is coming from a hobbyist photographer/videographer for over 16 years having used a ton of equipment. I love to shoot video a bit more than capturing images and the video output from the lens is so stunningly cinematic. It's the perfect field of view for 2.35:1 crop and it's more in line with a 19mm lens rather than a true 20mm (which is even better). This lens is wide, but not to the point of crazy distortion, it looks extremely natural, like a first-person view of things. I'm probably going to have this lens on my a7III 90% of the time because of how incredible the image quality is and how fun it is to use. This lens is a steal for the price range it's in. You're getting 94% of the quality of a GM lens for nearly half the price.

Perfect first lens for the Sony ZV-E1

This wide view and fast shutter is perfect as the first lens for the new Sony e1. It's still a great field of view with dynamic image stabilization turned on and cropped. And the blue looks great for vlogging or really anything you plan to shoot. Picture is stunning. Lots of video reviews to watch on this lens and those tell you all you need to see. Images are exceptional.

Nice lens but manual focus is fussy

I find the lens is edge to edge sharp at f8 and pretty good at 11. I use this for landscapes and I like to tape the focus down when I'm working. Problem is the manual focus ring is fussy and the readout can jump around with the least amount of turning. And, it only reads in meters! I like my feet and inches because I know my feet and inches and it's annoying Sony doesn't allow that option. Otherwise it's a nice lens.

I bought this lens last year after acquiring the my A7C. The 20mm f1.8 is outstanding particular for indoor limited light use. I personally dislike using flashes under any circumstances as it proves difficult to adjust (for me) even in post. This lens gives me the freedom to use it for limited light situations and still achieve great results.

Heavy vignetting

Very heavy vignetting with cold color cast in the vignettes. Vignetting does not completely go away after lens correction in lightroom. Distortion is not good either. In the past, I have been using a Sigma 20mm f/1.4 for Nikon F. In comparison, I was very disappointed in this sony G.

Used for Astrophotography

Solid construction, and the fast aperture makes for a great astro lens. I've shot some fun stuff with it so far. It's built solid with smooth aperture and focusing rings, and the balance is there. I like the focal length- I have a 14 that feels overwhelming, but a 35 isn't wide enough. The 20mm rides the fence nicely. Be warned: when the lens isn't on the camera, there is an internal element that shifts slightly. When attached to the camera, it does not do that, but if you're holding the lens in your hand, you may feel the imbalance. So far so good!

Outstanding images

I’ve been using his about a month now and am very impressed. I was looking for a multipurpose wide angle for Astro photography that would also be useful for landscape and am very happy with this lens. 20mm is a good sweet spot between the ultra wide 14 and the somewhat 24mm. This lens does outperform the 24mm gm in terms of sharpness. Distortion is minimal, handles flare very well and little to no fringing. Perfect lens for 2 prime lens backcountry travel. This and the 55 1.8 is an extremely lightweight and compact combo.

Many prime lens users appreciate the simplicity, performance and lighter weight of a prime lens as compared to a bulkier, stabilized/zoom lens. That's my guess.

Could it be mounted in a not full frame as the Alpha 6600. And what focal length would result?

I am using it with the a6600 and it’s a fantastic combination. It balances quite nicely and feels great in the hand. The autofocus is lightning fast and love the manual aperture ring.

Would this lens be overkill for a Sony a6000? Looking for a solid ultra wide angle lens for the a6000 but I can't determine whether this has features that I won't be able to take advantage of on my camera.
Asked by: Marc
This lens is quite basic with manual aperture selection. There is no lens stabilization. The effective focal length will be 30mm on the APS-C sensor of the a6000. I have used this lens on both an A7 and A7R4 so I can't comment on actual results on the a6000. That said, I have been very happy with the FE 20mm f/1.8 G, it is lightweight and delivers great results in low light.
