Hoya NDx400 overview

  • 1Description

The Hoya 52mm NDx400 HMC Filter is a solid neutral density filter that enables a 9-stop increase in exposure length. The optical 2.7 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

This filter features a three-layer HMC multi-coating, which provides 98-99% light transmission and helps to reduce internal flare and reflections. It is constructed from high-quality optical glass for notable image clarity and is set in a durable aluminum filter ring.

2.7 ND filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a slower shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 9-stop reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Three-layer multi coating helps to minimize internal reflections and ghosting and maintain an overall neutral color balance.

    Hoya NDx400 reviews

    52mm NDx400 HMC Filter is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Turns rushing water to smoke I purchased this product for a prime 24mm to use on streams and waterfalls in the backcountry. Very nice! The 9 stop difference turned them into smoke and gave the images a mystical look. I prefer to compose the shot and then install the filter as you will be hard pressed to see through 9 stops. I have been using Nikon, B&W and Hoya filters for years and this filter seems to be neutral in color and did not ghost with side sun light. As far as cleaning, not as easy as a B&W MC, but a fine cleaning cloth will due the trick.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I was looking for I picked up this filter to complement my much lower ND filters (0.3 and 0.6). I wanted something that would allow running exposure times of several seconds, something the 0.3 and 0.6 are simply too bright to achieve in most cases - especially on bright days. I use it on my Panasonic GX1 which I also just recently bought. I haven't had too much time to play with both, but I have achieved exposures of up to 20 seconds with no visible impact to colour of the output. Nothing magic about the filter. It simply does what it's suppose to do, and does it well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Tool for HDSLRs This is an 8 stop ND filter and a wonderful tool for HDSLR cinematography. Of course, photographers have used this for years but it is time for cinematographers to get on board. This filter allows you to shoot at very open aperture settings in almost any situation. Bright sunlight - though it may be too much ND depending on your camera and ISO setting, but even better use it for long exposure time lapse work to get blurred motion. This is something that was never possible with video cameras and was the sole domain of film camera time lapse. A great addition to the kit!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great accessory I purchased this neutral density filter after reading the reviews. Hoya had the highest scores especially for this NDx400 filter. I plan to use it for casual photography and when I travel this summer. Excellent quality and suitable for my needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the Results Love the results but keep in mind this filter will lower the overall color temperature.... which is not a problem when shooting raw. Creates excellent motion blur..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything it should be! I use this for daytime long exposures. I actually own two of this filter and they stack nicely for 18 stops! I haven't noticed any color cast. They are hard to clean off. Something about the coating makes dust and moisture stick to it really well, and a swipe with a lint-free lens cloth does NOT do the trick. It leaves a smudge. So I'll just leave it alone until I figure out how to do it right..

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An excellent, inexpensive filter I bought this filter for photographing water. It behaves much like a normal ND filter would, and I'm very happy with the results. I did not observe any significant vignetting with this filter, and colours are not affected in any major way. Also, I don't observe any significant reflections at the surface, which was a major concern as I stack this filter with a circular polariser.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good filter I did a few comparison shots in several conditions - bright sunlight, shade, overcast - and with several configurations - using only the ND filter; ND plus polarizing filter - and seems like a good filter to have in the arsenal. Will definitely need to use it some more to really see what this can do but so far I'm pleased with the quality of the glass and the effect on images.
