Hoya NDx400 overview

  • 1Description

The Hoya 77mm NDx400 HMC Filter is a solid neutral density filter that enables a 9-stop increase in exposure length. The optical 2.7 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

This filter features a three-layer HMC multi-coating, which provides 98-99% light transmission and helps to reduce internal flare and reflections. It is constructed from high-quality optical glass for notable image clarity and is set in a durable aluminum filter ring.

2.7 ND filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a slower shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 9-stop reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Three-layer multi coating helps to minimize internal reflections and ghosting and maintain an overall neutral color balance.

    Hoya NDx400 reviews

    77mm NDx400 HMC Filter is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 158.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from What Lightroom Can't do I use this to capture motion. Something Lightroom 5 can't do. Lately, I've been using it just after sunrise and just at sunset. I get about 10-20 second shutter at ISO 100. This allows some blur in the vegetation keeping the earth clear/sharp. Also, great for morning sun and tall waterfalls of 10ft+. It increases the exposure for that smooth water effect. It does get fingerprints of oil. But I just wipe it down pretty firm, and it cleans up well. When I first got the filter, I took great care and used gentle pressure to wiped it, and the gentle wipe does not work well. I found using a breath and firm wipe with a microfiber gives me better results on removing fingerprints.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter for long exposures. This is a great filter for long expousre shots even in daylight. I had been saving up for the Singh Ray Vari ND or Vari NDUO but decided to try this filter out since it is much less expensive. The only downside to the filter is that it is hard to compose a shot while looking through the veiw finder unless it is very bright out since the filter is so dark, I have found that using the live view function of my camera helps out a lot. The only other solution would be to compose the shot then place the filter on the lens, if you are shooting during twilight with this filter this is probably what you would have to do since you wouldn't be able to see through it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not meet description This product fails to meet description & specifications. After running tests, this filter failed to drop exposure by 9 stops (or 8.6 stops at ND400 to be exact). Actual exposure drop was never more than 5 stops. Upon contacting Customer Service at B&H, i was amazed at their brilliant service. They refunded me on the purchase, very courteously too. Not only that, but B&H waived the return of the original item. As a Canadian, this is very much appreciated with all the return-shipping hassle I was saved from. And to other Canadian customers I say I have never been disappointed by shopping @ B&H. They consistently give consideration and service unsurpassed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works Well My thoughts were to use this to smooth out water on lakes, etc. and for waterfalls. I did some test shots and viewing them on the camera lcd I thought I had some color cast in the longer exposures such as 30 seconds and above but when viewing the original jpg and raw images I wasn't really seeing any color cast even at those exposure lengths. I tried some hdr with this also and it turned out better than I expected. For the price, it was on sale at the time, I pleased with what I'm seeing. I'm trying to keep it pretty clean as many note cleaning this might be an issue so I'm putting it back in its case right after use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as advertised I wanted an affordable ND filter to try out. This one works quite well. Naturally, there is degradation in sharpness in the stationary subject, but this in my opinion, can be due to other factors such as the sturdiness of my tripod, wind condition etc. As far as colour rendering, I am not as concerned since that can be easily corrected via post processing. Here are a couple of first-time try out of the filter (with and without). Dont mind my finger near the bottom of the picture as i was holding the filter to my lens :-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great choice for 9 stop ND filter I've used this filter before sunset to get terrific photos of ocean waves washing over rock formations, or around a pier. There is a slight blue cast with my camera white balance set to cloudy, but it can easily be altered in post-processing if you shoot raw. And I actually find the color cast pleasing when shooting water. This is my first ND filter, and I'm quite happy with something in the 9-stop range. The only downside I've found is that it's tricky to clean it; your best bet is not to wipe it in the field but wait till you're home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome filter @ great price, No color c This Hoys 9D stop filter is awesome. I was considering B+W but there was the 'magenta' cast which I did not want. I was ok for a stop less than 10D, but no color cast for me. The 9 stops of Hoya are more than enough. I have got pretty good snaps of waterfall with this filter, with exposure time of 20sec in some cases in sunlight (reduce the EV if 20sec is too much of shutter speed). The build quality is great. As others have said, cleaning the filter is not straightforward, but not nightmare either. I tried 2 methods, 1) washed it with a drop of dish detergent under luke warm water and wiped it with a lint free cloth. This worked pretty well. But then I cant do this in the field. Hence option 2 for me is better. 2) I got a Proxxxxx cleaner ($, don't remember the exact name) from a local camera store. I spray it on the filter and wipe with the lint free cloth. This works for me and I can do this in the field too.I tried breathing onto the filter and wiping, but it leaves smudges. Go for it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Going to the Dark Side This extra dark ND filter, when used at ISO 200 delivers and ISO equivalent of about 1. Pretty dark. In fact, too dark in most cases to see through easily. Used primary when low DoF is needed on sunny days or when trying to eliminate humans and traffic for architectural 'mood' shots. The main downside is the inability to compose through the lens, and a slight warm or pinkish cast compared to no filter.
