Apple Mac mini Late 2018 Overview

Apple has re-engineered the Mac mini with 8th Generation Intel Core processors, giving it even more power for industrial-grade tasks, such as home automation, giant render farms, running a live concert sound engine, or testing your latest iOS or iPadOS app. Along with improved system and graphics performance, an all-new thermal architecture includes all-flash storage, a bigger fan, expanded vents, and a redesigned power supply, and Apple's T2 security chip. This Mac mini is powered by 3.6 GHz Intel Core i3 Quad-Core processor, while 8GB of 2666 MHz DDR4 RAM helps to ensure smooth multitasking and also allows the computer to quickly access frequently used files and programs.

Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 delivers a sharp, clear picture, and you'll be able to output video to an external display using the system's Thunderbolt 3 ports, which feature native DisplayPort output, or use the built-in HDMI 2.0 port. Up to three 4K displays are supported between any two Thunderbolt 3 ports and the HDMI port, or you can connect one 5K display via THunderbolt 3 and one 4K display via HDMI 2.0.

For storage of your files, this Mac mini is equipped with a 256GB PCIe SSD that has a sequential read speed of up to 3.4 GB/s. If you want to add external peripherals, four Thunderbolt 3 ports support bi-directional transfer speeds of up to 40 Gb/s, while also supporting 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2 (USB 3.1), device charging, and an external GPU. Thanks to two 5 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 1 (USB 3.0) Type-A ports, you'll still be able to connect other devices to this system. Gigabit Ethernet is built in for wired networking, or use dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) for wireless networking. Bluetooth 5.0 technology will allow you to connect additional compatible peripherals, including keyboards, mice, and headsets. Sound is output using a 3.5mm headphone jack. Apple's Mac mini operates using an internal 150W power supply that runs off 100-240 VAC at 50 to 60 Hz.

This Mac comes preloaded with macOS. Updates can be downloaded for free via the Mac App Store. Please check Apple's website for upgrade eligibility.

General Features
Part Racehorse, All Workhorse
In addition to being a great desktop computer, the Mac mini powers everything from home automation to giant render farms. And now, with an 8th Generation 3.6 GHz Intel Core i3 Quad-Core processor and Intel UHD Graphics 630, the Mac mini has even more computing power for industrial-grade tasks. So, whether you're running a live concert sound engine or testing your latest iOS app, the Mac mini is the shortest distance between a great idea and a great result.
Climb In, Geek Out
The Mac mini features 8GB of high-performance 2666 MHz DDR4 SO-DIMM memory for faster rendering, working with massive files, or running multiple virtual machines. And now you can configure even more memory - up to 64GB - to run even heavier workloads.
Haul Apps
This Mac mini has a 256GB PCIe SSD with sequential read speeds of up to 3.4 GB/s, so you can load giant files and launch apps quickly.
Apple's T2 Security Chip - Next-Gen Security
The Mac mini features the Apple T2 Security Chip, a second-generation custom Mac silicon designed by Apple to make the Mac mini even more secure. The T2 Security Chip consolidates several controllers into one, and includes a Secure Enclave co-processor that provides the foundation for encrypted storage and secure boot capabilities.
Strength in Numbers
The Mac mini is optimized for performance across the board, with programs including Xcode, WebKit Compile, Adobe Photoshop CC, Pixelmator Pro, Luxion KeyShot, Autodesk Maya, Compressor, Final Cut Pro X, Logic Pro X, MainStage, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and more.
Connections and Expansion
With a variety of ports, the Mac mini is ready for a variety of workflow configurations. Thunderbolt 3 is powerful and versatile, and the Mac mini has four of them. The HDMI 2.0 port delivers more bandwidth than its predecessor, so you can enjoy faster frame rates. For wired network access, take advantage of the integrated Gigabit Ethernet port.
Thunderbolt 3
Thunderbolt 3 gives you some productive possibilities. Transfer data at up to 40 Gb/s, charge and power external devices, connect up to two 4K displays—and even a third with HDMI 2.0—or one 5K display. Or, pair your Mac mini with an eGPU for desktop-class graphics performance.
To the Desktop, and Beyond
Because of its size, performance, and wide array of ports, the Mac mini goes where no Mac has gone before. And now, with even more cores packed into its 7.7" square frame, you never know where you'll find a Mac mini—or dozens of them—hard at work.

Build and Render Farms
The faster 2666 MHz DDR4 memory in the Mac mini is ideal for batching out massive Xcode builds or rendering and compressing video.

Xcode Server
A 3.6 GHz Intel Core i3 Quad-Core processor and fast I/O connectivity make the Mac mini a solid Xcode companion to build your apps quickly while running automated tests in the background.

Live Performance
With its 128GB PCIe SSD, fast performance, and small footprint, Mac mini becomes a live musical instrument with MainStage on some of the world's largest concert tours.

Digital Art and Signage
From performance art to immersive digital billboards, the Mac mini drives some of the biggest and brightest digital displays with its powerful processor, high-performance memory, and fast, versatile I/O.
Limited Warranty and Service
Your Mac mini comes with 90 days of complimentary technical support and a limited 1-year warranty. Purchase AppleCare+ for Mac to extend your coverage to three years from your AppleCare+ purchase date and add up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a service fee of $99 for screen damage or external enclosure damage, or $299 for other repairable damage, plus applicable tax.
macOS
macOS features Dark Mode, pro-inspired features, four new apps, and a redesigned Mac App Store.

Exactly what's stated on the tin. Not the newest or latest and greatest but still plenty powerful. I would recommend opting for a ram upgrade if you have the time.

Mac mini Intel Still Rules

I tried the new M1 Mac mini (2020). No doubt it is faster. It is more efficient due to the integration of the RAM, thereby requiring less memory for processing. My problem is, I use virtualization. Only Parallels Desktop 17 for Mac runs on the M1 Macs. The ARM processor limits the use of some applications; although Rosetta enables x86 software to run, but not every application. So the Mac mini (Late 2018) was a good choice for me, for now. It is powerful enough to run everything I use. Nothing was lost when I upgraded. The maximum RAM is 64 GB. As long as Apple supports this model--it most likely will for some time--I have no problem delaying a move to the new M1 models. The Mac mini (Late 2018) is still a solid performer. And I can run earlier versions of the OS if necessary, whereas the M1s cannot. Catalina, for example, still can do a few things that the newer OSs cannot, which is not surprising--there always seems to be something lost for whatever is gained. Not a big deal, but definitely a reality. Then why only 4 stars? Because the options to update storage and RAM are outrageous. Fortunately, the 2018 model still gives you some flexibility. The M1 Macs are not as forgiving. In the end, flexibility is good and bad. You can save money, but you have to be willing to jump through a couple hoops. Not a showstopper, just an Apple annoyance.

Great Little Computer

I bought this instead of the M1 version so that I could upgrade the RAM to 32GB (not an option on the M1). It runs well although if you're using it hard (even just general multitasking) it does run warm (which is to be expected of an Intel machine). Great value for $500 though.

I am using this Mac mini with pro tools. So far so good. At first I did not think the I3 would hold up. But I was able to get some sessions out the way just fine. But however the CPU was challenged after certain plugins was loaded. But it's okay.

I purchased this item. After I set it up it displays (2018) model. Was I sent the wrong item?

Note the response was from 4/30/20 here we are 7/10/20 and there is no fix for this. My Mac mini was purchased 6/28/20 and it shows as a late 2018 too. According to multiple apple source there is technically no 2020 Mac mini...although they list it as new on their website. They refreshed the 2018 with a larger storage option announced in the spring 2020 keynote. Bad on apple for causing this confusion and bad on sellers for listing this as a true 2020 computer...bait and switch!

will this work using an old Mac, (with a bad hard drive) as a display monitor?
Asked by: Robert
This would be dependent on if the older Mac would support target display mode. This can vary on only specific iMac models introduced in 2011, 2012, 2013, and mid 2014 To use any of these iMac models as an external display: The iMac used as a display must have macOS High Sierra or earlier installed. The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed. The cable connecting the two Mac computers must be a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 cable. 24-inch and 27-inch iMac models introduced in 2009 and 2010 To use any of these iMac models as an external display: The iMac used as a display must have macOS High Sierra or earlier installed. The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed. The cable connecting the two Mac computers must be a Mini DisplayPort cable.

Currently have a dell, & thinking about going mac mini. I have two hdmi monitors and 2 usb hardware devices to connect. will the mini do the job for me?
Asked by: Grace
This would work for your needs. But as this only has 1 HDMI port, you would need to get an adapter from Thunderbolt 3(USB C) to HDMi for the second display. Please see attached link https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1450581-REG/xcellon_c_hdmi_43_usb_type_c_to_hdmi.html
