Shure BLX188/CVL Overview

The Shure BLX188/CVL is a cost-effective wireless lavalier microphone system for two presenters, teachers, or lecturers, which offers quality sound, simple setup, and dependable performance right out of the box. It includes the compact and lightweight BLX88 dual-channel tabletop receiver with internal antennas, ideal for portable use.

The BLX188/CVL also includes two CVL cardioid lavalier mics with clips and windscreens and two BLX1 bodypack transmitters. The receiver features one-touch QuickScan frequency selection to quickly search 123 available frequencies and locate a clean RF channel in case of interference. The system provides up to 14 hours of continuous use with two AA batteries per transmitter, at a range up to 300'. Up to 12 mic channels can operate simultaneously in each frequency band.

This streamlined system is well suited for hands-free speech in small venues, wedding halls, and houses of worship as well as conference, educational, and corporate facilities.

Low-Visibility Lavalier Mics Optimized for Speech
The CVL Centraverse lavalier condenser microphones are built for low visibility and clear vocal reproduction. The mics feature cardioid polar patterns that help reject unwanted noise, Commshield RF Filtering to minimize RF interference from nearby smartphones, and a tailored frequency response optimized for speech intelligibility.
Lightweight Bodypack Transmitters
The durable BLX1 bodypack transmitters offer a lightweight, ergonomic design that is comfortable for presenters to wear. Group- and channel-selection buttons allow for quick and simple frequency matching with the receiver. Other features include an easily accessible on/off switch, adjustable gain control, and a TA4M 4-pin input jack.
Easy-to-Use Dual-Channel Tabletop Receiver for Quality Audio
The BLX88 receiver employs a microprocessor-controlled internal antenna diversity feature to improve the quality and reliability of your wireless audio. Two LED displays show group and channel settings, while four LED lights indicate when the system is ready for use and the strength of the incoming audio signal. The unit offers two 1/4" and two XLR outputs for connectivity to PA systems and mixing boards.
A Versatile System to Meet Your Needs
Shure offers a variety of lavalier, instrument, headset, and handheld microphone options to adapt your BLX system as your needs evolve.

  • The discrete MX153 sub-miniature earset mic provides exceptional clarity in spoken word applications.

This says "antenna diversity" so how does that compare to true diversity?
Asked by: Allen
The Shure BLX188/CVL Dual-Channel Wireless Cardioid Lavalier Microphone System only specifies "microprocessor-controlled internal antenna diversity" but does not get more specific on the type of diversity implemented. This article provides a good explanation of the differences in diversity types: https://bit.ly/3J80yOw

Do these work with the paddle antennas to get more range or help with interference?
Asked by: Eric
No, the Shure BLX88 receiver included with the Shure BLX188/CVL Dual-Channel Wireless Cardioid Lavalier Microphone System has built-in internal antennas and is not able to connect to external antennas. For this option, you will want to consider using the Shure BLX4R, SLX-D, QLX-D, and ULX-D series receivers.

Is the mic head of Shure BLX188 Wireless Cardioid Lavalier Mic adjustable to the position of the source of sound? Will the mic capture the sound when the speaker turns the head sideway?
Asked by: Sandra
The lapel microphones in the Shure BLX188/CVL Dual-Channel Wireless Cardioid Lavalier Microphone System feature a directional (although wide) cardioid pickup pattern. When clipped to the collar, they should capture the speaker's voice in most orientations when the lapel microphone is oriented in an upward position, although perhaps to a lesser effect if the speaker turns their head.

Can you replace the cardioid mics with omni directional mics?
Asked by: Paul
Yes, there are many omnidirectional replacement lavaliers compatible for use with the Shure BLX188/CVL Dual-Channel Wireless Cardioid Lavalier Microphone System. The microphones in this system are not currently able to be swapped pre-purchase, but additional mics could be added. The following link shows currently listed omnidirectional lavalier options from Shure, which is a small sampling of potentially compatible omni microphones: https://bhpho.to/3977fE5

question

is any of the three available frequency bands less vulnerable to interference? I want to use them in a deposition setting that changes from day to day from high end conference rooms to witnesses homes.
Asked by: john w
I can't speak to the 3 different band versions, but I can say that each version has a wide array of sub-bands you can choose from. Further more, the receiver has a function where you can have it select the sub-band with the least amount of interference -- it scans every band and then sets itself to the cleanest one. You then just set the transmitter to match. It has worked very well for me.
