General Features
Flexible Storage Configuration and Management
The TL-D800C provides software-controlled configurations for greater management flexibility. Users can configure RAID and monitor disk health using the QTS / QuTS hero Storage & Snapshots Manager on a QNAP NAS, or by using the QNAP JBOD Manager utility on their computer.
QTS Storage & Snapshots Manager
Use the Storage & Snapshots Manager in QTS or QuTS hero to configure the TL-D800C as a storage enclosure for your QNAP NAS. The NAS expansion storage mode supports various NAS functions, including storage pools and snapshots. With the TL-D800C, you can easily expand storage capacity.
QNAP JBOD Manager
The QNAP JBOD Manager is a desktop utility for monitoring the TL-D800C on Windows, Mac, and Ubuntu computers. You can quickly obtain disk statuses, JBOD information and health, view fan rotation speed, and check for firmware version updates.
What You Need to Know
You can connect your TL-D800C to Windows, Mac, and Ubuntu computers through the USB interface and use built-in utility to manage the RAID configuration.
Intelligently Monitor JBOD Enclosure Status on PCs and Servers with QNAP JBOD Manager
The QNAP JBOD Manager is a desktop utility for monitoring the TL-D800C on Windows and Mac computers. You can quickly obtain and view information about the JBOD status, health, fan rotation speed, and check for firmware version updates. All device events are recorded, and QNAP JBOD Manager will automatically send system alert notifications to your desktop.
JBOD Migration Speeds Up Remote File Transfers
Migrating a large number of small files or a single large data file by network environment can be time-consuming and consume significant network bandwidth that causes decreased work efficiency. The TL-D800C supports remote file transfer. All you have to do is set up the RAID configuration and store a large number of files. Then you can move the TL-D800C to another place and connect it with the computer or NAS to experience the device's simple plug and play feature and fast data migration.
Single Disk Mode
You can treat each disk in your TL-D800C as an individual storage space, and also use it as a removable drive. It can function like a high-capacity disk-drive reader. When one of disk reaches data storage limitation, you can remove it and put it into a dry box. Then, swap a different disk into the TL-D800C empty drive slot. After that, you can install the disk that reached full data capacity into the TL-D800C and connect it with a computer or NAS for direct file access.
Versatile Usage Scenarios to Meet Storage Expansion Needs
The TL-D800C meets many storage expansion requirements for the home and office. Below is a list of potential usage scenarios.
Scenario 1: Expand Your NAS Capacity
The TL-D800C provides an alternative method for users to expand their NAS storage capacity. By connecting the TL-D800C to their NAS and using the Storage & Snapshots Manager in QTS or QuTS hero, users can easily configure and manage their storage expansion. The TL-D800C supports a variety of QNAP NAS storage and file management functions, allowing users to build storage pools, finding files with Qsirch, and organizing files with Qfiling.
Scenario 2: External Storage for Your NAS
You can use the TL-D800C to expand your NAS storage. You can select disks to create storage pools for expanding your NAS capacity, or you can treat each disk as an individual external storage space and use it as a removable drive for greater flexibility. Regardless of the mode you use, you can always use Storage & Snapshots Manager in QTS or QuTS hero to set up and manage your TL-D800C and use hard drive S.M.A.R.T. and Notification Center to check disk status from almost anywhere.
Scenario 3: Expand the Storage Space of Your Windows, Mac, and Ubuntu Computers
You can use your TL-D800C with Windows, Mac, and Ubuntu computers to expand more storage space. You can set up the RAID configuration of your TL-D800C to further secure data protection. Moreover, you can also use the single-disk mode and format with the exFAT file system for more convenient access and sharing of files between Windows and Ubuntu computers.

Mode 1: RAID Configuration Mode
You can obtain data protection by building a software RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 5 volume with the native utility in your Windows and Ubuntu computers, and use the QNAP JBOD Manager to monitor the TL-D800C status information.

Mode 2: Single Disk Mode
You can format hard drives with the exFAT file system while accessing and sharing files between Windows and Ubuntu computers. Your QNAP NAS can also use the exFAT file system by buying the exFAT driver license from the QNAP Software Store.
High-Speed USB Transfers
The TL-D800C features high-speed USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 connectivity and built-in USB Attached SCSI Protocol (UASP) to provide convenient fast file sharing and intensive data transfer. The TL-D800C not only provides you higher file transfer performance than traditional USB interfaces, but offers a more cost-effective option than REXP SAS JBOD.
Extended Hardware Warranty up to 5 Years Available
The TL-D800C is backed by a limited 2-year warranty at no additional cost. You can purchase a warranty extension that extends your warranty coverage up to 5 years.

QNAP TL-D800C External HDD/SSD Reviews

Does Not Support USB C to C 1000MB/sec As Advertised

So disappointing. It works fine on my Mac Studio, but ONLY when I use the included very slow USB 3.0 to C cable, which has transfer rates of only 200-300 MB/sec. I have eight super expensive drives in it in software RAID, which should top out at over 1000 MB/sec. But instead this 8-bay DAS is slower than just one of those drives by itself in a previous enclosure. All previous enclosures from three different brands, including a cheap Sabrent 5-bay enclosure, provided 1000MB/sec transfer rates or more when using an identical software RAID setup. So of course, the first thing I tried is buying some expensive premium Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 certified 40 Gb/sec type C to type C cables. This product advertises that it supports them and has 1000 MB/sec speed with them, which is the whole reason I bought it. The official instructions say clearly that I can also use a USB C to C high speed cable to get the full 1000 MB/sec speeds as advertised by the manufacturer. But even the best most premium high speed cables don't work. I've tried one I had on hand and bought two more. However, anytime I use a C to C cable the TL-D800C unmounts from my Mac in about 60 seconds. And during those 60 seconds the speeds are still no faster. My first serious attempt was to copy 15 TB of data overnight to it...and everything went quiet after a minute. It happened over and over again. My screen is tired of Disk not ejected properly system warnings. So finally I had to use the USB 3.0 included cable, more than 3 times slower. It worked but glacially slow and now in the morning instead of the copying being done, I am still facing my computer with another 5 hours of transfers to complete during the work day. It should have taken only 4 hours with the advertised speeds, but it does not accept any C to C high speed cable. I have not had this experience with a DAS having only 300 MB/sec speed since buying a cheap one like 10 years ago. And the fact it includes only a USB 3.0 to C cable proves they know it doesn't function right. Why not have a C to C cable in the box if it worked? Because it doesn't work.

Finicky and Unreliable in Raid 5

Finicky and unreliable in RAID 5. I didn't think the software versus hardware RAID control would matter, but in hindsight I should have bought a 2nd TR-004 which works great for me. TL-D800C may work well for JBOD (since it likes to jump to that mode) or NAS expansion (I haven't tried those configurations). As an external RAID 5 drive, however, it has been very tempermental. Must follow power-up sequence exactly. TL-D800C seems sensitive to USB bus controler configuration and doesn't work with all PCs (only 2 of 5 for me) even on 10G bus. May have to disconnect other USB devices for it to work. The more I use it the more quirks and anoyances pop up.

I am using the unit in single disk mode and not RAID. I started with one 18TB drive at a time and slowly added more 18TBs and now am up to 8 18TBs. :)
