It features 8 x 3.5"/2.5" SATA III 6 Gb/s drive bays with a 10 Gb/s USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port to provide a fast and smooth expansion solution. Lockable hard-drive trays help prevent accidental drive removal and the status of the enclosure can be monitored using the LED indicators. You can also obtain data protection by building a software RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 5 volume with a native utility in your Windows and Ubuntu computers, then use the QNAP JBOD Manager to monitor the status of your TL-D800C.

Can I start by partially filling then add more as needed? i.e. start with 4 drives then work my way to 8?
I am using the unit in single disk mode and not RAID. I started with one 18TB drive at a time and slowly added more 18TBs and now am up to 8 18TBs. :)
