Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Overview

By B&H Photo's

Flexible zoom range, fast design, and compact profile, the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD is a unique take on the ubiquitous and popular telephoto zoom. Designed for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, this lens spans a useful short-telephoto to mid-telephoto range and is characterized by its f/2.8 maximum aperture to suit working in available light conditions and for controlling depth of field. A sophisticated optical design includes a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements to correct a variety of aberrations and a BBAR-G2 coating helps to reduce flare and ghosting for high contrast and color accuracy. Additionally, a floating elements system is used to ensure consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, from 2.8' to infinity. Autofocus is handled by a pair of VXD linear motor units, which deliver notably fast, accurate, and quiet focusing performance, and full-time manual focus control is also available. Suiting this lens's use in inclement weather conditions, it also features a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to protect against fingerprints and smudging.

Versatile telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 105-270mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent brightness throughout the zoom range and offers improved control over depth of field.
Six low dispersion elements, including both XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and LD (Low Dispersion) designs, greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to realize improved clarity and color accuracy.
Three aspherical elements, including both glass-molded and hybrid types, help to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness and accurate rendering throughout the zoom range.
BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting to achieve greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Two VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motors deliver impressively quiet, quick, and precise focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. This focusing system offers a minimum focusing distance of 2.8' at all focal lengths, and a 1:4.6 maximum magnification at the 180mm focal length for working with close-up subjects. Full-time manual focus override is also possible, and it is compatible with Sony's Direct Manual Focus function or fine-tuned manual control.
Two VXD units work in conjunction with a floating elements system to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range.
When working with manual focus at the 70mm focal length position, it is possible to focus as closely as 10.6" with a 1:2 maximum magnification ratio, however peripheral image quality may be reduced.
A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Zoom Lock switch prevents unwanted barrel extension during transportation.

Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Reviews

Awesome Image Quality in a Very Affordable Package!

I read review after review before buying this lens, and review after review were positive. This is one case that the reviews were spot on. This lens is lighter than the alternatives. Image quality is great, and it is definitely less expensive than the competition. I am absolutely satisfied with this Tamron lens.

A great lightweight zoom with a tiny bit of focusing issues

This for the most part works great, however it does have problems grabbing focus on subjects where the background is washed out. Had to switch to manual to get a picture of an eagle in its nest, as the lens couldn't lock in

Lightweight

Tamron made a 8xx gram 70-200 range lengs. That alone is amazing. I know lens extend while zooming is cheaper but it actually makes the lens compact. Easier to carry in the bag. Very sharp but seems less contrast than my other lens. The bouns is it has very good close up capability. I no longer carry dedicated macro lens for my food photography. I use this lens now. More versatile and close up is good enough for my need. I wish Tarmon will come out version II. Use their new linear focus and update the body to the 35-150 stardard.

Insanely Sharp Lens

Over the years, I have shot with similar focal range with Canon L, Nikon VR and Tamron for Pentax and this lens rules them all. It is by far the sharpest lens of this focal range I have ever shot with. For some reason almost all my new gen Tamron for Sony lenses have an issue with focusing in AF-S mode on my Sony A7RIV. This lens is not exception. So the solution is to shoot it on AF-C mode. Other than that minor issue, this lens delivers the good with flying colors. This is the only lens of this focal range I have shot with that is as sharp at f2.8 as it is at f5.6. I am doing a project that requires wide open aperture shots for maximum impact. I don't know of another lens that could have given me the images I am looking to create. This lens does it with exceptional sharpness and total lack of CA or other artifacts. This is true shooting at 70mm as it is at 180mm or anything in between. Easily the sharpest lens I have. Go Tamron.

Fantastic Lens

I am a long time B&H customer but ended up buying this lens locally. I wanted to add my experience with this lens for future buyers who want actual user's feedback. On a Sony A7RIV this lens is simply stunning. Over the years I have shot with Canon L, Pentax star and Nikon VR f2.8 variant of this focal length. This lens is by far one of the sharpest and easily the lightest of the bunch. I am doing a project that requires me to shoot wide open. This lens delivers the goods and I have images that are just as sharp and contrasty at f2.8 as they are at f5.6 or f8. The focusing is silent and fast too.

This is the perfect starter lens for the Sony A7 IV full frame camera. I can't get over how great this lens is.

Great little zoom

Even though I own a full frame camera I usually use my Sony A6400. So, with the crop factor that makes this a 105 - 270 which is my sweet spot for portraiture. The lens feels good, not too large or heavy and focussed really well. It's a Keeper!

Fantastic lens but,

I wont get into image quality, you all already know how fantastic this lens is. It's my go-to for portraits, and sports photography. I hardly use primes anymore for portraits, this is just perfect. The ONLY drawback i have to this lens, ugh, and it's a big one, the zoom has issues. Sometimes it gets stuck between 70-85, other times it gets stuck in the high end. The first time this happened it was within a month of purchase so i was able to return it to the eBay seller and got a full refund. The second purchase, I figured I'd buy from B&H so i minimize my risk. Well, it happened again, 18 months after purchase so it's no longer within warranty period. I have to be super gentle with it and it still works just fine, but it does get annoying.
