Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Overview

By B&H Photo's

Flexible zoom range, fast design, and compact profile, the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD is a unique take on the ubiquitous and popular telephoto zoom. Designed for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, this lens spans a useful short-telephoto to mid-telephoto range and is characterized by its f/2.8 maximum aperture to suit working in available light conditions and for controlling depth of field. A sophisticated optical design includes a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements to correct a variety of aberrations and a BBAR-G2 coating helps to reduce flare and ghosting for high contrast and color accuracy. Additionally, a floating elements system is used to ensure consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, from 2.8' to infinity. Autofocus is handled by a pair of VXD linear motor units, which deliver notably fast, accurate, and quiet focusing performance, and full-time manual focus control is also available. Suiting this lens's use in inclement weather conditions, it also features a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to protect against fingerprints and smudging.

Versatile telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 105-270mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent brightness throughout the zoom range and offers improved control over depth of field.
Six low dispersion elements, including both XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and LD (Low Dispersion) designs, greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to realize improved clarity and color accuracy.
Three aspherical elements, including both glass-molded and hybrid types, help to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness and accurate rendering throughout the zoom range.
BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting to achieve greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Two VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motors deliver impressively quiet, quick, and precise focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. This focusing system offers a minimum focusing distance of 2.8' at all focal lengths, and a 1:4.6 maximum magnification at the 180mm focal length for working with close-up subjects. Full-time manual focus override is also possible, and it is compatible with Sony's Direct Manual Focus function or fine-tuned manual control.
Two VXD units work in conjunction with a floating elements system to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range.
When working with manual focus at the 70mm focal length position, it is possible to focus as closely as 10.6" with a 1:2 maximum magnification ratio, however peripheral image quality may be reduced.
A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Zoom Lock switch prevents unwanted barrel extension during transportation.

Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Reviews

Great Performance at a Good Price

Yes, a focus dial and a manual focus knob would be great. But aside from that this lens works very well with my 7m4 SONY. It is quiet and quick to focus. Th 'macro' setting has very limited depth of field, but it does in a pinch.

Great lens!

Yet to have a problem with this lens. Love the speed and quality relative to the g master 70-200. Going to hold onto it for a while.

Nice lens

This lens works quickly and quietly. It is a nice alternative to the Sony branded lens, which costs a bit more. The firmware can be upgraded. I upgraded the firmware as soon as the lens arrived and the process was quick and simple.

This is a spectacular lens, especially for the money.

I saved up during my second year of college to upgrade to a Sony a7III and this was my first non-kit lens purchase for it. This is an outstanding lens that has returned some great results for me. The lens is fairly light, autofocus is fast and crisp and isn't super prone to hunting. Handles the elements fairly well. A crisp lens for great money. Only con is that I found the included lens hood is a touch flimsy, it fell apart on me after a year.

Game Changer. Light, great focus and easy to use.

I use this for both portrait work and sports on an A7iii. First, it is light, what you lose in 20mm length; you lose much more in weight. Fast focus and very accurate. I believe 98-99% of my photos were spot-on focus in my last Jiu Jitsu event indoors.

Awesome Image Quality in a Very Affordable Package!

I read review after review before buying this lens, and review after review were positive. This is one case that the reviews were spot on. This lens is lighter than the alternatives. Image quality is great, and it is definitely less expensive than the competition. I am absolutely satisfied with this Tamron lens.

Good value, flawed for video work

All in all, for the price its good. But it comes with compromises. Especially for video work. I like : the size and weight, the optical quality (for photos), the little extra (70mm macro capability), the large aperture. I know that most photo lenses aren't thought to be parfocals, but I always check what I'm dealing with when live zooming while recording video and this lens cannot be used for moderate to fast zooming. As long as you keep your focal choice while shooting its nice, but as soon as you would like to keep the zoom movement in the shot, its bad. Everytime you zoom in or out, everything goes blurry until you hard stop. And no its not the autofocus. Even in MF, when you use the zoom the image goes blurry. Its not subtle or quick enough for the eye NOT to notice. Its also somewhat made worse by the plastic feeling of it. I guess it depends on the work, but not being able to keep a fast zoom in or out really cripple my use case. It would be a 4-5 star if was mainly doing photos.

Compact for a f/2.8 zoom

I bought this to use with a Sony a7c. I wanted a zoom tele that was compact and yet have f/2.8 through the entire zoom range. This lens fits the bill. It doesn't have stabilization, but my camera body does. While it has internal focus, the lens does extend when zooming. It also only zooms to 180mm. For me, the trade off is that I get a lens that weighs half of the competition, is smaller than the other lenses, and fits in the bag nicely. In use, the lens is great. Images are sharp wide open, focus is snappy, and it does everything I need, even in low light.
