ProMediaGear BH1 Sputnik Overview

The 2 lb BH1 Sputnik Arca-Type Ball Head from ProMediaGear is a black anodized CNC-machined aluminum head with internal steel components. By disengaging the large main locking knob of the head, it allows you to move the ball unlike conventional ball heads. Because the head has a rotating slot, it permits you to move the clamp in any 90° multi-angle direction.

The 5.5" tall ball head rotates a full 360° via its independent pan lock, and it can hold camera equipment weighing up to 50 lb. The clamp tightens down onto the included PBX3 quick release plate with its aluminum screw knob mechanism, and the clamp is laser engraved with a millimeter scale to repeat a position of the quick release plate.

manufacturing defects

I liked the design of this ball head, especially the large knob that is easy on the hands for people with arthritis. It is reported to have no drift/shift when tightening the tension, but I could not confirm this since the head was not usable. The first one I received had damaged threads on the insert so it could not be attached to my tripod. It was returned for exchange. The second one had the exact same defect and in addition the quick release clamp was stuck closed, so it was returned. I also contacted Pro Media Gear and they sent me just the threaded insert, but it also had the same defect in the threads. All returns thru B&H were handled easily and quickly, I could not have asked for better service (5 stars). ProMedia also responded to my inquiry and sent a replacement insert, but it was damaged too (no photo). ProMedia offered to repair the unit, but I decided to purchase another brand.

I have arthritis in both hands and this ball head helps me turn knobs with less stress on my joints. Very flexible also.

Outstanding Ball head!

Love this Ball Head, very smooth and extremely sturdy. Lens creep is basically non existent. Love the large turn knobs for tension and base. Wasn't sure at first if I would like this design over traditional ball head, but after using it for just short bit I think it's much better than any other ball head I have used before. Only con is that they don't have a lever lock plate option. So I replaced it with RRS one and works great. Get the best of both worlds with RRS plate.

I don't like ball heads...

...but this one is different. I have tried other traditional ball heads but usually found them to be, at least for me, difficult to position with any degree of precision. To be fair my usual tripod head is a Manfrotto 405 geared head, so I am a bit used to precise control. Having tension control and lock on the same large knob works great for me. The fit and finish on this head is on a par or exceeds those of ANY manufacturer, RRS included (and I have and really like RRS products). I also have a ProMedia Gear tripod and 4 L brackets as well as numerous quick release plates, all machined with the same precision. But no manufacturing process or quality control is ever perfect. When I received this ball head, there was a defect caused by a part that was blocking movement of the quick release plate in the channel where it attached to the ball. I emailed ProMedia and within minutes I had a response asking for a photo of the problem area. I sent a photo and within minutes I had a response indicating that a replacement would be sent to me by the next day and I was provided a postage paid return label for the defective unit and their regrets for any inconvenience. As I noted, no manufacturing process is perfect, what really matters is how a company stands behind their products when an inevitable issue happens. I now have the replacement ball head and it works flawlessly and I do love it and equally important I know that Pro Media stands behind its products. Highly recommend both this ball head and Pro Media Gear.

I like it better than my RRS because it is much easier to shoot straight down.

Mixed feelings about this ballhead

The only disappointing aspect is that it struggles to handle my Nikon 200-500mm lens. I use it with a gripped D850 and notice severe drooping when i place the tripod over my shoulder with this setup mounted to the ballhead. I don't think this should happen considering the fact that the BH1 is designed to support a 23 kg payload and my setup is nowhere near that number.

This is not your normal ball head.

Most Ball Head often difficult to adjust, with small knobs to adjust tension and locking in place. ProMediaGear provides you with a large easy to grip knob enabling you to adjust in difficult conditions.

How can you convert the knob to a lever lock like Reallyrightstuff uses. I have the BH-55 and am thinking of a change?

I would presume that you would replace the top plate with one from RRS that has the clamp built into it. You can see the screw holding the top plate on in the pictures.

A review by Lensvid (whoever they are} points out that the movement of the Bh1 could be smoother. I wonder if they mean it seems to stick . But on the other hand they do say it seemed to be better after using it. Is this the experience of others or is it likely they had a faulty copy. Can anyone shed some light on this concern?

All of the reviews we've seen of the ProMediaGear BH1 Sputnik Arca-Type Ball Head mention how smooth the movements are.
