Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 STM II Overview

Distinguished by its updated sleeker and lighter weight design, the Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 XF II is the second-generation of this portrait-length prime designed for FUJIFILM X-mount mirrorless cameras. The lens's short-telephoto focal length pairs with the bright f/1.8 design to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions and also for controlling depth of field and isolating subject matter. The optical design comprises one extra-low dispersion element, one aspherical element, and four elements made from highly transparent glass, which all help to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations in order to realize high clarity and sharpness. Additionally, the lens features an STM motor for quick, quiet autofocus performance along with a minimum focusing distance of 2.6' for working with close-up subjects.

Mark II of this lens sports a more svelte and lighter weight design for greater versatility and portability.
Portrait-length prime is designed for APS-C-format FUJIFILM X-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 127.5mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers a wealth of control over focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
One extra-low dispersion element and four elements made from highly transparent glass contribute to reducing a variety of aberrations in order to produce well-corrected imagery with accurate color and no color fringing.
One large-diameter aspherical element minimizes distortion and spherical aberrations in order to produce high sharpness and accurate rendering.
HD Nano multi-layer coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce flare and ghosting for improved contrast. Also, this coating is water-resistant to help protect the exposed surfaces from moisture.
STM autofocus motor delivers quiet and precise focusing performance along with a minimum focusing distance of 2.6'.
Electronic contacts convey Exif data as well as permit camera-based aperture selection. Additionally, an integrated USB port permits updating the lens's firmware.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Included lens hood shades the front element from flare-causing stray light and also offers some additional physical protection.

Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 STM II Reviews

An amazing 85!

I bought it instantly since I knew it would be pulled from the market, its fast and sharp. An 85 lens is not something I use often but this is perfect for when I do need it. Its only shortfall is that its really hazy when shooting backlit.

Fantastic for the money

I bought the Viltrox 85mm to replace the Rokinon manual focus 85mm. I am using it with the Fujifilm X-T2. The Viltrox is a far better lens with respect to image sharpness, even when using manual focus mode. I really love this lens, but I would strongly recommend using a ND filter with it, since this lens is all about using it at its widest or near widest openings. In many cases, you will need to use an ND filter to maximize the image fidelity as well as to achieve the outstanding bokeh that this lens offers at its widest apertures. One negative note - I wish images had just a little more contrast. That is my only reservation, but this minor issue can be very easily corrected in post.

This lens has a very solid build quality feel to it, the lens caps and hood attach easily, and the images are sharp with nice bokeh. Colors pre-edit look good and appear to be accurate. I shot the attached unedited jpeg photos in the shade during daytime at f/1.8 using a Canon R5.

It's definitely worth of money. $399 for this lens could be a steal lol. Nice bokeh and it's much better than Sony 85mm f1.8. AF is fast enough. I heard that you can get f1.6 if you update firmware, but haven't tried that yet. Anyway it's as sharp as I expected.

The lens is great. Although I do wish they sent a cord to plug in with it to update the lens firmware. Other then that, it has been great to work with, used it at a local car show.

Great reach for travel.

This lens comes at a good price. I compared it to the Nikon 85mm f1.8G that I had. It's a little sharper. There is some CA but it is less than the Nikon 85mm f108G that I was replacing it with. AF works perfectly. Eye AF works great no complaints. The focus ring is vary smooth. It came with the latest firmware installed. Got lens profile for light room and Photoshop for Viltrox website. I am vary happy with this lens.

It would be controlled via the dials on the camera. Much like if you set a Fujifilm lens to "A" with the Command setting for your dials.
