Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Overview

By B&H Photo's
Presenting impressive reach in a relatively compact design, the Sony E-mount 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary lens, from Sigma, is a versatile telephoto zoom mixing a hand-holdable design with apt optical performance. A series of low dispersion glass elements are used to achieve high clarity and color accuracy throughout the zoom range, and to suppress chromatic aberrations and color fringing. Complementing the optics is intuitive handling, in which a stepping motor delivers fast, near silent autofocus performance along with fine-tuned manual focus control. Additionally, four stop-effective optical image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting and this 100-400mm is also compatible with the optional TS-111 Tripod Socket for steady shooting atop a tripod or monopod.
As part of the Contemporary line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance between convenience and performance, and meshes a compact, lightweight build and versatile handling with notable optical attributes:
  • Telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras but can also work with APS-C models where it provides a 150-600mm equivalent focal length range.
  • One F Low Dispersion (FLD) element and four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements markedly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy.
  • Optical image stabilization compensates for up to four stops of camera shake to help realize sharp imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds.
  • Integrated stepping motor realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance.
  • At the 100mm end of the zoom range, a minimum focusing distance of 3.7' is available, and at the 400mm end, the minimum focusing distance is 5.2' with a maximum magnification of 1:4.1.
  • Rounded 9-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
  • Integrated AFL button can be programmed to adjust various shooting settings and the lens also features a focus limiter switch for faster focusing performance within certain distance ranges. There is a zoom lock switch to prevent the barrel from accidentally extending.
  • Brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity, and rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount's design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
  • Compatible with optional TS-111 Tripod Socket for working atop a tripod or monopod; the included PT-31 Protective Cover can be attached to the lens to maintain a seamless appearance if the tripod socket is not used.

Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Reviews

Still putting it through the paces, but so far so good. Feels solid but not too heavy. AF is pretty good, but not perfect (again budget lens). It's perfect for a hobbies like me.

    Great for Safari

This lens shows up on a lot of top 10 lists of nature photography / safari etc. It's also one of the most affordable at ~1k. So I bought it. I'd say unless your a birder or professional photographer, this should be plenty for your wildlife photography needs. Autofocus was reasonably quick. Zoom works great. Pictures were clear. I absolutely love this lens. It's also a fairly packable size for travel in comparison to other similar lenses that are much more expensive. During my recent safari there were very few instances where I couldn't reach what I was trying to capture. Would it be nice to be able to zoom in to 600? Yes. Is it worth spending an additional $2000 for that? NOPE. I ended up using this lens almost exclusively during my recent 5 day trip to kenya to shoot wildlife. I'm sure people who are more sophisticated than me, have different views about this, and why more expensive products are better. But I really felt this was sufficient. In fact I was incredibly grateful to have this over my stock lens which really could not reach what we needed to see. It was absolutely worth it and necessary to get the most of my photography during the trip. Otherwise, you might as well just use your phone.

Great imagery for a terrific price

I was going to buy the new Tamron but then I noticed this Sigma. I was already sufficiently covered by shorter focal lengths so I opted for this zoom. Yes, it's sort of big and heavy - but that is certainly a relative term because it's not bad for what it actually covers. Anyway, the imagery is stunning good - sharpness, contrast, color fidelity are all top notch and the build quality is solid. Comparing it to an equivalent G Master lens - this isa huge bargain where, for why purposes, I give up just about nothing. Even compared to the Tamron, where all I give up is wider end - it's still a better value with (arguably) better imagery.

I am not good with reviews. This lens takes beautiful, sharp pictures. Focus is easy in either manual or auto. It does have some weight to it but not as bad as some of the bigger, older lenses. Price was great. Recommend this lens for beginners as well as pros

It's heavy but will not disappoint on Full Frame or APSC cam

This is my first 4K 400mm zoom lens. I have a Sony 18-200mm optical AVCHD. Video looks great straight out of the camera on my a6400 and a7iv. The photos/stills aren't too bad either I captured some bird footage through a glass sliding door as well as outside. I recommend getting the lens mount because on lighter cameras like the a6400, it feels like it would wear on the body after time

    Great Lens for shooting wildlife

If you're someone like me who loves to capture wildlife but does in their spare time, then this lens is for you. It has a great built but at the same it's not that big and heavy either. You'll be able to go on hikes carrying your camera with this lens attached without a problem. Also, you'll be able to get some stunning images. Definitely recommend it.
