Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD Overview

By B&H Photo's

Offering the unique mixture of an all-in-one zoom range and a fast design, the 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD from Tamron is a wide-to-super-tele zoom distinguished by its bright f/2.8 maximum aperture at the wide end of the zoom, along with its sleek and portable design. A series of specialized elements are used to maintain high sharpness and clarity throughout the zoom range. Benefitting the optical design is an RXD stepping motor, which enables quick, near-silent autofocus performance to suit stills and video, along with full-time manual focus override and a minimum focusing distance of 7.5". Suiting this lens's use in harsh climates, it also sports a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to protect against fingerprints and smudging.

All-in-one zoom is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 42-300mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright f/2.8-5.6 maximum aperture range suits working in available lighting conditions, especially when working at the wide-angle end of the expansive zoom range.
A series of specialized elements control a variety of aberrations in order to achieve high sharpness and clarity.
RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) autofocus motor delivers impressively quiet, quick, and smooth focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. This focusing system also offers a minimum focusing distance of just 7.5" and a 1:3.1 maximum magnification for working with close-up subjects. Full-time manual focus override is also possible, and it is compatible with Sony's Direct Manual Focus function or fine-tuned manual control.
A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Zoom Lock switch keeps the lens in its retracted position when not in use.

Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD Reviews

I have not been able to replace it

Listen to me. Whenever I travel this is the lens that stays in the camera before dark and I have been very please with all the photos.. Good AF on my sony A7R IV and it is sharp everywhere even at 200mm. At 2.8 aperture at 28 and 200m I have not been able to replace it as my daily driver for travel, and I have tried. I have thought hard about something like a 70-200 but enter a closed space and you need to switch. The all around 28-75 or some 24 to 70 are great options, but I still miss been able to shoot some bird in flight, a part of the landscape or even the moon at 200m. Setting the price aside, I thought hard about the 35 - 150mm, I think the focal lenght is comparable, would not miss much, and the 2-2.8 is amazing but the 2.57 lb is more than I am willing to carry on my camera for several hours. Of course If you have this lens you dont need to switch after dark. Yes I miss the wide part, 24mm would be great. That is why aI also carry with me a 18mm 2.8 and at least a 1.4 or 1.8 prime for night shots. We have all our preferences. I have been tempted to buy what are objectively better or brighter lenses, but in my case I have not been able to buy a better lens with an all around range, that is sharp, with good AF, and lightweight l for travel. And I keep looking.

This is a nice lens. You don't need a variety of lenses when you have this one. Very pleased with it.

For whatever reason this lens was never on my radar. But with the focal range, image quality, weight, size, weather proofing, I feel like between this and maybe the 17-28, most people would be set! Bought it mostly for backpacking due to versatility, size and weight, couldn't be more pleased!

The Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III is a manual zoom-based lens and doesn't electronically zoom. The other reviewer is correct you will need a PZ lens.

Set the focus mode in the camera to MF and then turn the thinner dial on the lens to do manual focus. A7iii also supports peaking and mf assist which makes manual focus pretty easy.
