Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD Reviews

Super versatile with great image quality

This lens should be everyone's must have. It is by far the most versatile sony E mount lens in the market. Only wishes are: 1. it would be better if it starts at 24 instead of 28 2. larger aperture (I may be too greedy)

Perfect travel lens

I rented this lens and the Tamron 18-300 prior to purchasing this 28-200. This lens is fantastic! I wanted one lens for when I travel and this lens fits the bill. I thought the 18-300 would but it was a little too big and the images from 300mm were not sharp. The images from the 28-200 are sharp across all focal lengths. Check out some of my sample images. Zoom in on the lighthouse top and you will see the woman's should er tattoo. And then check out the details of the eyes on the girl with the hat.

A super value all in one lens for the Sony E Mount

This lens has an excellent focal length range with a wide f stop at the low end (28 mm) and more than adequate f stop at the high end (200 mm). My wife and I are using this lens on a Sony A7IV, Sony A7c and Sony A7RIVa and we find it to be an ideal carry around lens to which we default when we are not doing 'serious' or more focused photography (pun intended). It is light, relatively compact and well made with some weather resistance and takes a standard 67mm filter (which appears to be Tamron's standard for their Sony E Mount lenses). Auto focus is excellent and very responsive and matches most of their constant f/stop lenses for the Sony E Mount. Results are remarkable for a lens of this focal length range and cost. Slight softness at the edges is just noticeable at the long end of the range but this does not detract from the tac sharp focus image in the center throughout the focal length range. f/5.6 may seem a little dim at the long end of the range (200 mm) but I find myself using this even on lenses that claim f/2.8 just to get the depth of field, so in practice this reduction in light at the long end is not a problem. f/2.8 at the wide end is great as you are more likely to be inside a building trying to get a shot while close to the subject where the wide is most useful and the light level lower. The only criticism of this lens is that the wide end is limited to 28 mm and not the more usual 24 mm. However, the consequences of trying to achieve this would be a lens that was bulkier and more costly as you have more work to do to correct speherical aberration and pin cushion or barrel distortion at the wide end. Overall a superb addition to our lenses for the Sony camera and well worth the money. The slight trade off in image quality is more than compensated for by the fact that this is the lens you are more likely to have mounted and available for that shot which occurs at a time when you do not have time to swap out the lens for a higher quality but more restricted focal length range lens.

Versatile, sharp

When I first got this lens, I was also considering the Sony 24-105 f/4. I have absolutely no regrets getting this Tamron lens. It is the perfect travel lens. It is extremely sharp and has a very versatile focal range - wide enough for most landscape shots while also having a significant telephoto capability good for wildlife and event photography). It is also extremely lightweight, making traveling even easier with this lens. I personally think that the longer focal range of this lens is more useful than the constant f/4 of the Sony lens and the wider end of the Sony lens (not to mention that in the 28mm to approx 100mm focal range, the Tamron has a wider aperture than the Sony lens). To put it all together, the Tamron even has a very reasonable price around 700$. Overall, I'm super happy with this lens and it will be my go-to lens for all my traveling, along with a sony 20mm f/1.8.

What a great lens! I've always been a bit of a stickler for using only Sony brand lenses on my cameras and previously had a negative view of third party lenses but this Tamron 28-200mm has really changed my mind. I find this lens to be immensely useful in the focal lengths covered and my copy is very sharp at all focal lengths and apertures. I considered the Sony 24-105 f/4 G but I find 105mm to be limiting on the long end and the Sony 24-105 has horrible vignetting at 24mm. I find 28mm totally fine on the Tamron at the wide end. I often just now go out with the Sony 20mm f/1.8, Tamron 28-200mm and a fast Voigtlander 50mm f/1.2 and that covers most of my creative needs. This lens will replace my Sony Zeiss 24-70 f/4 and Sony 70-200 f/4 G. Yes it's that good! Very happy with this purchase.

I have never been a fan of Tamron lenses and have never kept one that I tried before when I had a DSLR. But this lens for the Sony E mount camera is different. The photos I've taken using it on my A7Riii are stunning with incredible sharpness from front to back. On a recent trip shooting waterfalls I took images focused on the foreground, middle, and background expecting to have to focus stack them in post-processing. But when I got them into Photoshop I was able to use a single image because it was sharp throughout the photo. There is no image stabilization but the Sony camera bodies have some internal stabilization that seems adequate enough for handholding the camera and lens. I've successfully shot a sharp night image handheld at 1/25th of a second. I can truthfully say that I am totally blown away by the quality of the images I've gotten with this lens. So much so that within 10 days of purchasing this Tamron lens, I sold my Sony 70-200mm f/4 lens. The Tamron did not come off my camera the whole time I was on vacation. It was fun to shoot with being able to zoom in and out to experiment with compositions and not having to change lenses. I compete regularly at a local camera club and need sharp images. This Tamron 28-200mm lens gives me that competition-worthy quality image.

A great value in a wide range zoom

While I have only had the lens for a few weeks, it hasn't been off the camera since I got it. Its range covers almost anything I'd do albeit not with same level of quality that my 20mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 G lenses perhaps but I'm hard pressed to see any real differences. While my others lenses would be used for specific occasions, this lens is the best travel option for the money. For that reason alone, I would recommend it to any one in the market for such a lens.
