The optical design utilizes two aspherical elements and one SLD element, which help to reduce both spherical and chromatic aberrations for greater sharpness and clarity. As part of the Contemporary line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance between convenience and performance, and meshes a compact, lightweight build and versatile handling with notable optical attributes.
Portrait-length prime is designed for APS-C-format Leica L-mount mirrorless cameras and provides an 84mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.4 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field for achieving selective focus effects.
One special low dispersion (SLD) element reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy.
Two aspherical elements are used to limit distortion and spherical aberrations and also contribute to greater overall sharpness and accurate rendering.
A super multilayered coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
A stepping AF motor benefits both photographers and videographers with its fast, precise, and near-silent performance.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass to ensure accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust and splash resistant.

Great lens. I've used it on the XT2, XT3 and XT4 with stellar results. Of course at f1.4 you want to be really careful with that focus. Really careful. But I'm always pleased with the performance of this one.

Truly a full frame performer at a APS-C price and size. I love this lens - it's practically a point and shoot professional portrait lens. Works great with the flaky Nikon focusing system - better than the actual Nikon lenses, in fact, excellent bokeh at f1.4 and excellent sharpness at f5.6 - absolute stunner!

This lense is definitely one of my favorites. I do like that I can put the aperture to max on really sunny days and use a really fast shutter speed for action shots. It's also really great for situations where you don't have as much light as I'd rather have a larger aperture than turning up the ISO to a point where noise is noticeable. The only thing I regret about this lense is not waiting until I could get the whole 3 lens set. The 56 mm with APS-C isn't always ideal for indoor photography when you don't have too much room to set up a shot. On another note: the build quality is awesome: this lens feels heavy and rugged. I would definitely recommend this lens though.

They are both very fast in focusing. I have not seen a difference in speed between the Sony 85mm FE and the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens (Micro Four Thirds).

The Sony APS-C sensor has a crop factor of 1.5x. So when using this lens on an APS-C camera the equivalent focal length will be 84mm.
