Canon RF Extender 1.4x Reviews

Canon Extender RF 1.4x

It restricts the 100-500mm lens to 300-5000 times the 1.4 extender because Canon saved money by narrowing the outer casing so the the extender intrude into the lens stopping it from collapsing pas the 300mm mark. on the ef 1.4 extender the outer housing is longer and this doesn't happen. This means you loose the closeup ability of the lens whewn the extender is attached.

Amazing 1.4x Extender!

The Canon Extender RF1.4x is great. It is light weight and when on a lens it actually lengthens the lens less than my old EF version. The image quality of the photos with it seems better than the EF version to me and I never had an issue with the EF 1.4x on my EF 100-400mm L ii. I mainly bought this to use on my new RF 100-400mm in order to extend my range to 560mm. But it also works well on my RF 800mm F11, giving me a whopping 1120mm. So now I have a lighter, smaller zoom with amazing minimal focus distance and over full zoom range for small birds that are close to me and my 800/1120mm for larger birds or birds at more distance. The combination of these three pieces gives me amazing flexibility, less weight and less room in my pack. It's true that at dawn and dusk I've given up some light-gathering ability, but honestly, I don't shoot then most of the time any more. I couldn't be happier with the Extender RF1.4x using my R6. It pretty much stays on my 100-400mm most of the time. It's given me a lot of flexibility for minimal cost and great weight/space savings.

Sharp, small and light! Far more compact than the EF 1.4x. If you have a compatible RF telephoto lens, this is a must have companion.

Perfect working with RF100-500 and 800 f11 on the R5

Making the rf100-500 a 420 to 700 with same IQ (IMO) as lens without extender is a no brainer. I use the set up on my R5. Downside-yeah it only works with the lens set at a minimum 300--which means it probably won't fit in your normal camera holster. I use a mindshift bag--the mounted lens with the 1.4x and lens hood fits in the bag just right. Also at 700 you're at f10 -- so not great in low light situations, but with IBIS of the R5 and the IS on the lens--and the ability of post production software such as Topaz DeNoise-it's doable with a little work. 1/2500 at f10 and ISO of 12,000 to 16,000 has worked for me-again with a little work in post. Okay it's not perfect, but it's not bad. Same with the 800 f 11 which now becomes f16--which now definitely needs more light. I thought about the 2x--based on reviews opted for the 1.4. Also need to add that I shoot mostly birds right now. A lot of my shots are handheld. I think using the 2x -definitely for me I would need to be on a tripod unless I was shooting at 1/6000 to 1/8000 (which is probably doable under the perfect situation). And the 1.4x fits in my pants pocket for easy accessibility. These are just my thoughts based on using the 1.4x.

Great optical quality

I'm using this extender together with the RF 100-500 mm zoom on an EOS R3 camera. Image quality is great; there is very little sharpness degradation compared to using the lens without the extender.

I use it regularly with my new RF 100-500mm Canon lens with good results. Slightly inconvenient that when in use, I cannot fully retract lens.

I got this for the RF 100-500 lens, and I love it. It really extends that lens's reach. I do not see any IQ loss when using it. The only complaint I have is that I can only use that lens in the 300-500mm range with it on.

When using rf 100-500 and 1.4x converter, is there any chance of the 1.4x converter touching the back glass of the 100-500 lens (whether when attaching or zooning)?

Yes there is a chance that this extender can touch the rear element, therefore it can only be used within the 300-500mm range on the RF 100-500mm lens.

RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM (can only be used within 300-500mm range). What does 300-500 range mean? So while on my New R5 (on order) what happens between the 100-300 portion of the zoom?
Asked by: Patrick
When you're using the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM with the teleconverter, it will not allow you to set the lens to anything less than 300mm in focal length due to the design of the teleconverter and rear internals of the lens. Basically, you won't be able to zoom wider than 300mm when using the teleconverter.

Does this Canon Extender RF 1.4x give us a better image than the EF 1.4x? Is this compatible with the 100-400mm 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens or the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM Lens?
Asked by: Brian
The RF extender is made specifically for the RF 100-500mm lens, and the new super-telephoto lenses. When it comes down to image quality, it is suited specifically to get the most out of the RF lenses. It is not compatible with the EF 100-400mm or any EF lens for that matter.

Will this work (fit) with the EF/RF adapter allowing it's use with EF telephotos?
Asked by: Phillip
This isn't answering the question you asked, but it may help. If you have the EF lens and the EF extender, you can add the EF/RF adapter and it works! (At least it does with my EF 100-400 L lens.) It adds 2 inches to the length of your lens, but really doesn't seem to affect the lens weight or feel, and other than losing a stop of light as expected, I haven't had issues with it.
