Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM Lens
Key Features
  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Fixed f/11 Aperture
  • Retractable, Locking Lens Barrel
  • Gapless Dual-Layer Diffractive Optics
Super long reach, super compact design, the Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM is a unique telephoto prime featuring a distinct mixture of focal length and form factor. Characterized by its retractable design and a fixed f/11 aperture, this lens's sleek profile makes handheld super-tele shooting a very real possibility, and four stop-effective optical image stabilization further helps to achieve sharp imagery when working in difficult lighting conditions. Also contributing to the reduced size is a distinct optical layout, which uses gapless dual-layer diffractive optics instead of multiple heavier individual elements, which also effectively controls color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity. Complementing this design is an STM stepping motor that delivers quick and quiet autofocus performance that is suitable for both stills and video needs. Additionally, a Control Ring is also integrated into the lens design for intuitive control over exposure settings from the lens itself. If you decide you need more than 800mm, this lens is compatible with the 1.4x and 2x RF Extenders for an equivalent focal length of 1120mm or 1600mm, respectively.

Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM Overview

If you decide you need more than 800mm, this lens is compatible with the 1.4x and 2x RF Extenders for an equivalent focal length of 1120mm or 1600mm, respectively.

Super-telephoto prime is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless digital cameras.
Fixed f/11 aperture contributes to the sleek and portable form factor as well as a balanced mixture of depth of field and sharpness.
Gapless dual-layer diffractive optics contribute to a marked reduction in chromatic and spherical aberrations as well as benefit the design of a relatively compact and lightweight lens.
Retractable/extendable design, with a locking lens barrel, offers an impressively compact form factor considering the super-telephoto design.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
STM stepping motor offers fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance that is ideal for video recording as well as still shooting.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Compatible with optional Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x teleconverters to further increase the effective focal length.

Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM Reviews

Has its limits, but still a good telephoto

I've had this just a couple of weeks but I've used it a few times and I'm very satisfied with the IQ of the lens (when paired with my R5)--it almost has to be used in very good light, but in good light returns excellent images. It's light and easy to hand-hold--just gotta keep telling yourself it's f11, it's f11, it's f11...

Perfectly sharp for the cost

At less than half the cost of the rf zoom lens and extender it's a great options for me. If you are new to wildlife photography and want to limit your investment, this combined with a Neewer gimbal tripod head is a great way to go!

But for non-rotating collar, exc. choice for long distance

f/11 not the hindrance I thought it would be. With Canon R5, set shutter at 1000 and shot herd of deer 100 yds away hand-held using auto iso in late afternoon partial sunny conditions. Tack sharp results at iso's up to 10,000. Benefit of f/11 is that the whole body, head, torso, and tail, all in focus. Just need to get a collar adapter that will allow me to use on a monopod portrait as well as landscape.

Superb value for money

This is a remarkable lens for its price. It only works with the mirror less cameras but it's light, great clarity and very easy to handle. Excellent all round

not impressed

I saw many review before i ordered it. I agree that its light, well built, relatively small, F11 is not really a problem under the sun. AF is ok. But i don't agree about the image quality. After seeing those reviewer saying that you can quite crop a lot because there is some good sharpeness, i was expecting more i guess. For me it'is just ok for this price. My RF 100-400 has a way better image quity. Should i have not buy it for my R7? Maybe. Is it better on a R6? Probably. A bit disappointed.

Sharp

I use it on rocket launches with the R7, so effectively it is a 1260mm. It worked great at night on a SpaceX launch was able to focus. I shot hand held at 1/60 th sec with all the image stabilization worked great. Not so much during the day. Needs a lot more contrast for focusing. Worth the $900. Very sharp and $19000 cheaper than the other one.

A lens to use

I've avoided 800mm focal length lenses in the past, partly because of the cost (that can be very high) and partly because of the bulk and weight of the better options available. This lens addresses both those issues, giving up some flexibility and quality in return. For me, the trade off is a no brainer. The cost is very reasonable and the downsides such as the fixed f/11 aperture and a build quality that is not tank-like turn out to be of little consequence in real life use, with the plus that the weight of the lens is astonishingly light on the camera for a unit of this size. Its extendable/retractable nature makes it relatively compact as well. This make it a pleasure to use, and that means it is likely to be on the camera rather than off, encouraging more photography. The image quality is very good and the depth of field provided by the fixed aperture is going to be perfectly useful in most situations. At 800mm, long range image quality is going to be susceptible to atmospheric conditions in some situations and to make good use of this lens you need to be aware of the types of distortions that can affect your image and that have nothing to do with the lens itself. That said, this lens opens up opportunities with wildlife that you just don't get with lenses with less reach. With it, I've expanded my photographic capabilities in a very satisfying way. Its existence and engineering are a clear plus for the mirrorless system.

Does it come with a hood or foot/tripod mount?
Asked by: Steve
I dont know that I would call it a foot like on other long Canon lenses but there is a mounting pad on the bottom of the lens, located just below the stabilizer switch. It is configured just like a standard camcorder mount with a -20 tapped hole plus a non-tapped hole that mates to an anti-rotation pin. I happened to have an old RRS B26 ARCA-Swiss QR plate with the camcorder pin on it, and this mates perfectly to the bottom of the lens so you can mount it to any ARCA-Swiss tripod head. Worked great for me.

This will not mount on any EF Mount camera. The adapters only allow an EF lens to be mounted on an RF Mount body. Not the other way around
