Key Features
  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Fixed f/11 Aperture
  • Retractable, Locking Lens Barrel
  • Gapless Dual-Layer Diffractive Optics
Super long reach, super compact design, the Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM is a unique telephoto prime featuring a distinct mixture of focal length and form factor. Characterized by its retractable design and a fixed f/11 aperture, this lens's sleek profile makes handheld super-tele shooting a very real possibility, and four stop-effective optical image stabilization further helps to achieve sharp imagery when working in difficult lighting conditions. Also contributing to the reduced size is a distinct optical layout, which uses gapless dual-layer diffractive optics instead of multiple heavier individual elements, which also effectively controls color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity. Complementing this design is an STM stepping motor that delivers quick and quiet autofocus performance that is suitable for both stills and video needs. Additionally, a Control Ring is also integrated into the lens design for intuitive control over exposure settings from the lens itself. If you decide you need more than 800mm, this lens is compatible with the 1.4x and 2x RF Extenders for an equivalent focal length of 1120mm or 1600mm, respectively.

Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM Overview

If you decide you need more than 800mm, this lens is compatible with the 1.4x and 2x RF Extenders for an equivalent focal length of 1120mm or 1600mm, respectively.

Super-telephoto prime is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless digital cameras.
Fixed f/11 aperture contributes to the sleek and portable form factor as well as a balanced mixture of depth of field and sharpness.
Gapless dual-layer diffractive optics contribute to a marked reduction in chromatic and spherical aberrations as well as benefit the design of a relatively compact and lightweight lens.
Retractable/extendable design, with a locking lens barrel, offers an impressively compact form factor considering the super-telephoto design.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
STM stepping motor offers fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance that is ideal for video recording as well as still shooting.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Compatible with optional Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x teleconverters to further increase the effective focal length.

This is a remarkable lens for its price. It only works with the mirror less cameras but it's light, great clarity and very easy to handle. Excellent all round

Not every non-professional can afford to put down $12,000 for a long lens. I was really surprised by the build quality and usability. Very fast focusing with my R5. Anxious to see if it works as well with the R7. Terrific value!

The Sharpness of this lens is breathtaking

I went digital and saved up for the RF100-500mm zoom reading the reviews that the zoom was sharper than the f11 RF800. After a couple of months I wanted more reach and during a sale I got the RF800. It is so light I thought it can not compete with the RF100-500 zoom even with the 1.4x teleconverter. Boy was I wrong, it is light and fast and breathtakingly sharp. From the first photo I was shocked at how sharp the images that this lens can produce. The filter is a funny size, but the lens has stayed on my camera from the day I got it home, f11 is not such a problem. The 100-500mm with the 1.4x is f10, not much difference and 100mm more reach. And so easy to carry. The only down side is the large minimum focal distance, but the pics are superb!

If you need reach, and sharpness on a budget...

This is the lens for you ! I had rented this lens and did surprisingly well with it in the field. I then rented the RF 100-500, a MUCH more expensive lens, and probably didn't do quite as good ? What I learned, was that the zoom function of the 100-500 wasn't near as important as the reach of the RF 800 F11 ! Oh, and since I almost constantly had the 2.0 Teleconverter on the 100-500, it was no faster, than this lens ! In fact, the 100-500 was just a touch slower ! Anyway, nothing against the 100-500, if zooming is important for your shooting, but if good reach on a budget is your priority, I don't think their is anything else that can do it like this lens, for this price. Anxious to get my own copy today or tomorrow :)

So far, a good lens for a sunny and dry day. The slowness of the lens is not a handicap for wildlife.

So far this lens has really surprised me. The f/11 is not the big limitation i thought it might be. It works very well with my R6 for birding.

I saw many review before i ordered it. I agree that its light, well built, relatively small, F11 is not really a problem under the sun. AF is ok. But i don't agree about the image quality. After seeing those reviewer saying that you can quite crop a lot because there is some good sharpeness, i was expecting more i guess. For me it'is just ok for this price. My RF 100-400 has a way better image quity. Should i have not buy it for my R7? Maybe. Is it better on a R6? Probably. A bit disappointed.

There's a learning curve.

Great IQ and compatibility with Canon bodies compared to the Sigma Contemporary. Here are a few observations about using it on an R6: Don't fear to use high ISO - Noise is hard to find even at ISO 12,800 Use spot or eye focus - otherwise the Camera will focus on the most high contrast area it can find and that won't be where you expected DAMHIK! The focus ring is accessible and sensitive. That's great for overriding auto focus when you need to pick your target out among weeds or brush. But it's also very easy to twist slightly when you're just holding the lens and using autofocus. The resulting slight misfocus is easy to overlook while shooting. It's quirky and different, but Image Quality is very good. The light weight and reach are phenomenal. Hand held results were far, far better than expected. If you adapt to its various strengths and limitations, it's something special for wildlife and birds!

Does it come with a hood or foot/tripod mount?
Asked by: Steve
I dont know that I would call it a foot like on other long Canon lenses but there is a mounting pad on the bottom of the lens, located just below the stabilizer switch. It is configured just like a standard camcorder mount with a -20 tapped hole plus a non-tapped hole that mates to an anti-rotation pin. I happened to have an old RRS B26 ARCA-Swiss QR plate with the camcorder pin on it, and this mates perfectly to the bottom of the lens so you can mount it to any ARCA-Swiss tripod head. Worked great for me.

It has an RF mount. You can buy an adapter that will allow the RF mount to fit any Canon camera with an EF mount. So with an adapter it will fit, however with the crop factor of an APS-C lens, the field of view will be more like 1200-1300mm.
