Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM Lens
Key Features
  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Fixed f/11 Aperture
  • Retractable, Locking Lens Barrel
  • Gapless Dual-Layer Diffractive Optics
An impressive and incredibly unique super-telephoto, the Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM is an especially compact and lightweight lens considering its long focal length. Featuring a retractable design and a fixed f/11 aperture, this lens's sleek profile makes handheld super-tele shooting a very real possibility, and optical image stabilization further helps to achieve sharp imagery when working in difficult lighting conditions. Also contributing to the reduced size is a distinct optical layout, which uses gapless dual-layer diffractive optics instead of multiple heavier individual elements, which also effectively controls color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity. Complementing this design is an STM stepping motor that delivers quick and quiet autofocus performance that is suitable for both stills and video needs. Additionally, a Control Ring is also integrated into the lens design for intuitive control over exposure settings from the lens itself. If you need more reach, the 600mm is compatible with the 1.4x and 2x RF Extenders for an effective focal length of 840mm or 1200mm, respectively.

Super-telephoto prime is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless digital cameras.
Fixed f/11 aperture contributes to the sleek and portable form factor as well as a balanced mixture of depth of field and sharpness.
Gapless dual-layer diffractive optics contribute to a marked reduction in chromatic and spherical aberrations as well as benefit the design of a relatively compact and lightweight lens.
Retractable/extendable design, with a locking lens barrel, offers an impressively compact form factor considering the super-telephoto design.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to five stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
STM stepping motor offers fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance that is ideal for video recording as well as still shooting.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Compatible with optional Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x teleconverters to further increase the effective focal length.

Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM Reviews

Great for the price.

It is, as many people have reported, a great lens for the price. I was disappointed at first trying to find focus in wooded areas with shaded or indirect lighting. I found that this lens works best if your subject is in direct sunlight. When you can manage this the sharpness is much better. All-around I would recommend this lens. A bit tricky to learn but easy enough with good quality results.

Difficult to get used to lens.

I decided to try this lens because the 100-500 that I wanted was on back order. The optical quality of this lens is better than I expected. Image stabilization and the excellent high iso quality of R6 made the f11 not a big issue (as I was worried initially). The lens is light and easy to carry. The problem was the ability to find the object (usually a bird) in the view finder without the mechanisms of zooming out then in. It was harder than I anticipated. Once I get my 100-500 I will decide if I want to keep this lens or not.

Don't.

I tried, I mean I really tried to like this. It falls so short in image sharpness. The AF is prehistoric times slow, and when it finally does focus you'll receive an image that makes you ponder the energy wasted on pushing the shutter. The minimum focusing distance on this thing was more than 20ft. I mean, c'mon geez! In each scenario I tried it was utterly disappointing. This lens is not the real deal. Do yourself a favor and save your coin for a real Telephoto Lens.

Quite capable RF lens

I've been using the RF 600mm lens for 4 months now with my EOS rp and am extremely pleased with the improvement in my bird and wildlife photography. Previously I was using a 70-300 L series lens which provided some fine photos, but the added reach and lighter weight of this lens makes up for any possible deficiency in the glass. On the 4th of July I ordered an R 6 and RF 600 f11 lens from B & H , I purchased the R 6 SPECIFICALLY due to the RF 600 and RF 800 series f11 Lenses . I used a R 6 and RF 800 for 7 days on vacation and was Impressed enough to Purchase as soon as Stock Supply was Available . Yes it is Polycarbonate ( plastic ) and Yes it is a Fixed f11 aperature , which is Why it is $ 700.00 instead of $ 12,000 dollars ! This Lens is SHARP .. Focuses FAST .. and Produces Clear Images when Enlarged to 20 x 30 .. What More Can You Want for $ 700.00 ? Light, Sharp long reach lens with great image stabilization

My hobby is bird photography and I have spent a lot on the big white lenses. Now that image stabilization has greatly improved as well as sensor sensitivity and noise, much slower lenses have become an attractive alternative to the big f2.8-4 lenses. I now use the strategy of a high pixel sensor (R5), selecting in body cropping (APS-C 1.6x) and the 600mm and 800mm f 11 lenses. While the f11 lenses have limitations and focusing can get sluggish in low light and contrast situations, I find the image quality they provide to be very good. The 600 is very light and significantly more compact than the 800f11. A small back pack can carry both f11 lenses leaving a 100-400 RF lens on the body. This gives a system of 100-1280 mm with no need for teleconverters which would further slow and degrade the image. I have found this an excellent alternative to the big lenses. The 600f11 is an absolute best buy.

I've been looking at some extreme telephoto lenses and dreaming of having something I can use to get some wild shots with, this is an amazing lens! At F/11 you still get compression and Bokeh but incredible sharpness. the 600 was my first choice but if you're Strictly wanting a Birding or wildlife lens, you should consider the RF800mm instead. this is a good lens and luckily on the EOS RP I can crop in 1.6x to get 960mm but sometimes it still doesn't feel long enough even ( that's my only small complaint so far ) other than that, this is lightweight and solid enough for some spectacular images

When tested, we did not notice any significant loss of functionality/reliability. However, as the only extension tubes for RF lenses currently available are third party ones, your results may vary.
