Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM Overview

An impressive and incredibly unique super-telephoto, the Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM is an especially compact and lightweight lens considering its long focal length. Featuring a retractable design and a fixed f/11 aperture, this lens's sleek profile makes handheld super-tele shooting a very real possibility, and optical image stabilization further helps to achieve sharp imagery when working in difficult lighting conditions.
Super-telephoto prime is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless digital cameras.
Fixed f/11 aperture contributes to the sleek and portable form factor as well as a balanced mixture of depth of field and sharpness.
Gapless dual-layer diffractive optics contribute to a marked reduction in chromatic and spherical aberrations as well as benefit the design of a relatively compact and lightweight lens.
Retractable/extendable design, with a locking lens barrel, offers an impressively compact form factor considering the super-telephoto design.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to five stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
STM stepping motor offers fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance that is ideal for video recording as well as still shooting.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Compatible with optional Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x teleconverters to further increase the effective focal length.

I really wanted this to work. It does, if you are happy with the sharpness of a zoom at best... My Canon rf 100-500 cropped is better...

You get what you pay for

This lens seemed like a great addition to my lens arsenal, offering a lot of reach for what I consider a price that is affordable for an accessory lens. I wanted it for wildlife and compressed perspective photography. Problem is, the lens sharpness is hit and miss, and not always predictable. Auto focus area is so large, that capturing detail within it often fails to get it right on auto mode, and the manual focus aide is useless, while manual focus at 600mm is very difficult. Best result was using focus bracketing to get at least one foot shot of 5, but even then, it's not assured. F11 fixed is part of the problem. Not fast enough for anything but full sun,.not small enough to sharpen detail focus. getting this lens to function for critter pix means knowing the distance,.being exceptionally careful of focus locations, and accepting that 7 out of 10.images are going to be disappointing. If I had a choice now of having the money to spend on other lenses or just in my pocket, and this specific lens... I would take the money and skip this lens. The minimum focus distance is also insanely long, making this a very limited use product that is fussy and limited in utility. The lack of included lens hood and missing tripod foot with no way to add a rotating tripod mount is also a miss here. In retrospect, aused EF 100-400mm f4.5 - 5.6lens is a better path to my intended goal, has a tripod foot, and far less fussy to work with. So, I suggest anyone looking at this lens to think long and hard about it, as it is very much a case of getting what you pay for, which may not be enough.

Can you use extension tubes to allow the lens to focus closer? If so, does the lens lose any connectivity?
Asked by: Douglass
When tested, we did not notice any significant loss of functionality/reliability. However, as the only extension tubes for RF lenses currently available are third party ones, your results may vary.
