Canon R6 Overview

Canon EOS R6 Mirrorless Camera
Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera for Photographers and Video Content Creators
Delivering incredible performance at speeds up to 12 fps, the EOS R6 camera from Canon can capture the split-second details between a subject's movements. This is great for dynamic action photos of athletes, animals, or vehicles in motion. The selectable electronic (silent) shutter mode can capture images at up to 20 fps, which is useful for wildlife photographers and photojournalists.
20MP Full-Frame Sensor and DIGIC X Processor
Built around a revised 20MP full-frame CMOS sensor, the EOS R6 offers modest resolution to complement a more manageable workflow, especially for those working with the web and small print forms as their final output. This sensor is paired with a fine-tuned DIGIC X image processor, which enables impressive stills and video capabilities, along with sensitivity from ISO 100-102400, which can be expanded up to ISO 204800.
4K60 and Full HD 120 Video Recording
Beyond stills, the 20MP sensor also affords UHD 4K video recording at up to 60 fps, along with Full HD at 120 fps for slow-motion playback. Both formats can be recorded internally at 4:2:2 10-bit and both Canon Log and HDR-PQ are supported for greater control over color rendering, and to suit high dynamic range output. Additionally, Dual Pixel CMOS AF is supported for all recording settings and external recording, via the HDMI port, enables clean 4K output to an optional external recorded.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
An updated Dual Pixel CMOS AF II features 1053 selectable focusing points, which cover approximately 100% of the image frame for wide and even coverage. This focusing system offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. The system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, the Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery.

Subject tracking has also been benefitted through the use of Deep Learning technology, which helps to gradually refine the focusing system's ability to quickly and accurately recognize both people and animal subjects. This technology also supports the more refined eye, face, and head detection functions, for both people and animals.

Sensor-Shift Image Stabilizer
A first for EOS cameras, the R6 incorporates five-axis sensor-shift image stabilization that compensates for up to an impressive eight stops of camera shake for truly effective compensation to suit handheld shooting with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system also works in concert with lens-based optical image stabilization for both native RF lenses and adapted EF lenses.
Body Design
  • High-resolution 3.69m-dot 0.5" electronic viewfinder provides a bright and detailed means for eye-level viewing and the quick 120 fps refresh rate offers natural motion rendering for a more realistic viewfinder experience.
  • Rear 3.0" 1.62m-dot LCD touchscreen features a vari-angle design that benefits front-facing recording, such as for vlogging needs, as well as working from high and low shooting angles.
  • Refined body design incorporates four distinct control dials across the body for intuitive tactile control and a joystick controller on the back of the camera offers fast and intuitive focus point selection and menu navigation.
Dual Storage Card Slots and Wireless Connectivity
  • Dual SD UHS-II memory card slots are featured for flexible storage needs.
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi is available for fast file transferring to a mobile device and Bluetooth is present to provide constant device connection via the Canon Camera Connect app.
  • A 3.5mm headphone port and separate 3.5mm external microphone port are featured for improved audio monitoring and recording capabilities.
Impressive Durability
  • Comfortable and solid in the hand, the exterior of the EOS R6 is made of lightweight and rigid polycarbonate resin, while the internal structure is mainly magnesium alloy to enhance body durability while shielding the camera from electromagnetic radiation and heat. It also has a tempered front panel for internal rigidity.
  • Durable, weather-sealed body design is built to handle tough working conditions and inclement weather. Sealing materials are used in critical areas like the buttons, the terminal covers, the battery compartment, and the card slot cover. Precise design and construction help minimize accidental penetration of dust and moisture in the rest of the camera body.
Canon EOS EF-Mount Lens Compatibility
Most Canon EOS EF-mount type lenses can be used on Canon EOS RF-mount camera bodies with the use of the required Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, which is separately available.
Firmware Version 1.5.1, Released Feb 2022
  • Fixes an issue where in rare instances, the camera may become inoperable when shooting in the Servo AF setting while operating the AF-ON button.
Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM Lens

Sleek and versatile, the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM is a well-rounded zoom covering wide-angle to short telephoto focal lengths to benefit working in a wide variety of conditions. A variable maximum aperture also helps to maintain an impressively compact profile to suit everyday shooting needs. Complementing the flexible design is a unique Center Macro Focus position, which enables working with close-up subjects at a 1:2 maximum magnification ratio, and an Optical Image Stabilizer also helps to achieve sharp imagery by minimizing the appearance of camera shake. Also, an STM motor affords impressively quiet and smooth autofocus performance and full-time manual focus override. Additionally, a configurable Control Ring lets you adjust exposure settings, including ISO, aperture, and exposure compensation, from the lens itself.

Standard zoom covers wide-angle to short-telephoto focal lengths to suit working in a variety of situations.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to five stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
STM stepping motor offers fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance that is ideal for video recording as well as still shooting.
Specialized Center Macro Focus setting enables working with a 1:2 maximum magnification and a 5.2" minimum focusing distance to suit photographing close-up subjects.

Canon R6 Reviews

Great Camera

While I still haven't found out all of what my camera can do, and I haven't figured out all the ways to leverage the things I've already discovered, this is already a great camera. I came to the R6 from about a decade on a 7D mkii and so many aspects of this camera blow me away - the focus points (location and plentitude), the weight, the display screen, the multiple imaging for focus stacking, and much more. If there's any drawbacks - so far I still haven't gotten used to the digital screen in the eyepiece. It's very obviously digital and it doesn't quite match the quality of the image as I see on the back, or on my computer after.

I have only used the camera twice. I did a practice round which worked seamlessly. Then I photographed two important events, attempted to transfer my images to my phone and there was an error 61 and showed no images on card. I was in contact with B&H's tech corner call and were able to get my images back! I was so thankful for Danny's expertise in retrieving my images!

I have had this camera for almost two years. I shoot both video and stills. The stills are great. I shoot both raw and jpg. Perfect color and very good in low light. The lens I use is : Canon 24-105 f/4L USM LENS/ACC I shoot video in the highest resolution possible. The 4K video is outstanding and edits very well with my software, Grass Valley Edius.

It isn't perfect but really good

I've been using the R6 for 2 years and feel very comfortable using it. I shoot exclusively wildlife and find the camera a joy. Eye detection is very good but busy backgrounds can fool the camera. There is a known issue of the camera freezing. This can happen at any time and doesn't seem to have a specific cause. This is different from the high temperature video overheating. I've had it happen on average once per month which isn't frequent since I'm shooting 5 hours per day, twice per week. When it happens the camera is completely unresponsive, the screen freezes and removing the battery is the only fix. The solution is sending to Canon for a board replacement. I haven't had it repaired because it does not bother me that much and I don't want to be without the camera. The frame rate is excellent. The best part is you can hold the button down and the buffer never fills. That makes catching the action easy. It handles low light amazingly well and with modern software image noise can be eliminated really well. The comparatively low resolution isn't much of an issue for me but I'm sure I'd be able to crop more with more resolution. I use the RF800 f11 almost exclusively and the high ISO performance is a great match. For the money It's a winner for me.

It does its job. I had before Canon camera from 2009 and when I get R6 it is, of course, the hugest difference. I was choosing between R5 and R6 but decided to go with the cheaper R6 option with the thought in mind to upgrade the lens. These pictures were taken with a standard RF 24-105 lens. Looking forward to upgrading to be able to shoot good portraits. Highly recommend this camera for professional and personal use. It won't disappoint you.

Is it okay EOS R6 screen has momentary black-outs while scrolling or finger-stretch enlarging? I went from 80D and hadn't experienced this characteristic. P. S. I Love that we can see setting-change while viewing real time.
Asked by: Toni
The eye sensor is causing the momentary black outs. As mentioned in the previous reply, it is best to swipe side to side with your finger.

About 20 years ago, I toured a studio that replaced their medium format cameras with Nikon D1X bodies that were CCD & less than 6mp. They had prints that were as wide as the couch bellow, that were sharper than the film shots that were using a 6x7 negative. Is 20mp big enough to make quality 4x6 to 20x24 prints..? LOL.... I'd say so!
