Ultra-Wide, Ultra Versatile

Comprising a range of ultra-wide fields of view, the Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 GM is an E-mount zoom characterized by an impressively bright and versatile design. Ideal for landscape, nature, architecture, and interior applications, the lens's constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and advanced optical design make it a perfect choice for working in difficult shooting conditions while still offering well-corrected imagery.

Advanced G Master Optics

  • As part of Sony's esteemed G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve notably high resolution and sharpness through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations.
  • Bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field.
  • Nano AR Coating II has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions. This updated coating is better suited for larger, curved elements and is especially adept at minimizing internal reflections.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing shallow depth of field techniques.
  • Three XA (extreme aspherical) elements and one standard aspherical element are incorporated into the optical design, which features superior surface precision for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, distortion and other spherical aberrations for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
  • Two Super ED elements and three ED elements are featured in the lens design and help to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • Floating focusing system divides the focus group into two separately controlled groups and helps to maintain consistently clear optical performance throughout the zoom and focus ranges.

Fast Focusing and Intuitive Handling

  • An XD Linear Motor system uses four separate motors—two per focusing group—along with an internal focusing design to provide quick, quiet, and precise autofocus and tracking performance.
  • Linear Response manual focus control offers more natural handling and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
  • A focus hold button is present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 11" is available throughout the zoom range.

Durable and Practical Design

  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
  • Fluorine-coated front element resists dust, moisture, and fingerprints and is easy to clean.
  • Integrated petal-shaped lens hood helps to block stray light from causing lens flare and also affords some physical protection to the front element.
  • Filter holder is incorporated at the rear of the lens, within the lens mount, and accepts cut gel filters and a filter cutting template is included.

Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 GM Reviews

Awesome

I bought this lens primarily for Astrophotography. I've only been out with it a few times, but I've been blown away with the images I've gotten so far. Really fun. The weight is acceptable to me when hand holding. My only real complaint besides the price are the challenges in using filters - but that is typical of wide lenses like this. Anyway, highly recommended if you can/want to afford it.

Exactly What I Wanted

After researching the options for a wide angle zoom, I decided to spend the extra money to buy the 12-24 GM. Well worth it, the low end of the zoom pretty much provides for infinite depth of field even at the lowest f-stop. The lens is sharp corner to corner and thus far I haven't noticed any barrel distortion.

I love this lens. I am enjoying the great photos it takes for architecture photography as well as real estate photography. It can also be used to make very unique shots for other things when you put your mind to it.

Didn't Know What I Was Missing

I was on the fence for a long time as to whether or not I should purchase the 12-24mm GM lens. It was pricey but I knew it would be a perfect addition as a go to lens for travel photography. I already had the 24-70mm GM lens but missed the advantages of a wider angle option. I have NOT been disappointed. The 12-24mm has incredible sharpness with low light capabilities that bring great utility. I now have a pair of lenses that cover the vast majority of what I need for a variety of environments. I highly recommend the 12-24mm GM lens if you have the resources to acquire one.

Best wide zoom I've ever used.

At this price, expectations were very, very high! The lens has proven to measure up to those expectations and then some. While the 12-24/2.8GM is big, it isn't avoid taking it big or cumbersome. 12mm is a kick ... and when used with care can produce spectacular interior shots as well as creative outdoor images. IQ is better than I expected, very crisp and very nice color rendering ... distortion is very low and when the profile is selected in LightRoom almost disappears ... what really helps is that LR now has an aspect ratio control slider th normalize items or persons in the center of the picture. Great lens .. now a go to staple in my kit rather than a novelty lens ... a real keeper.

Great lens.

is the image quality actually better than the f4 version, apart from the 1 extra f-stop? i am trying to see if it is worth the upgrade from the f4 G version.
Asked by: Dennis
In my opinion yes. It’s one of the sharpest lenses I’ve ever used and the lack of distortion at 12 compared to the f4 is crazy. If you need any lower light and have the cash I’d say go for it!

Hello Jeremy, I do have the NISi 150mm filters with the holder for the Sony 12-24mm f4. My questions is can I use that with the 12-24mm 2.8? By the way, the link you have in your response seems not to work. Thanks
Asked by: Mansoor
Hey Mansoor, unfortunately the filter holder does not work with the 12-24mm f/2.8 GM. NISi have made a filter holder for the new 12-24 GM if you need it. Luckily you only need the holder and not the glass. It's called the NiSi S6 150mm Filter Holder.

What's the best option for a polarizer when doing video?
Asked by: Sky
Unfortunately there are not a lot of options currently. One option is a Matte Box. The other option is a filter holder with a mount specifically designed for this lens. Currently only Nisi has such a holder. Here is a link to the holder with the included Circular Polarizer. https://bhpho.to/2Nz6Zme

Asked by: Mansoor
Hi Mansoor! The Sony 12-24mm needs 150mm filters, which you can use with the NiSi filter holder designed specifically for that lens (https://bhpho.to/2YKvYW9) or, if you have the NiSi S5 system, you can use this adapter as well - https://bhpho.to/2YKvYW9
