Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 150-400mm f/4.5 TC 1.... Overview

With impressive reach and versatility, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm f/4.5 TC1.25X IS PRO, from Olympus, is a super-telephoto zoom lens characterized by its expansive range, built-in teleconverter, and relatively sleek design for handheld use. Built for Micro Four Thirds cameras, this zoom offers a 300-800mm equivalent focal length range, which can be extended even further using the integrated 1.25x teleconverter for an effective 1000mm equivalent focal length. The constant f/4.5 maximum aperture affords consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and is reduced slightly to f/5.6 when the teleconverter is in use. Additionally, a series of specialized low dispersion and high refractive index elements help to reduce a variety of aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to achieve high clarity and sharpness. A Z Coating Nano has been applied, too, which controls flare and ghosting for higher contrast and accurate color rendering in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the huge zoom range is an apt image stabilization system that compensates for camera shake in order to deliver sharp photos and videos. This system can also work in conjunction with camera-based stabilization, via Sync IS, for even more powerful stabilization to suit working at the extreme ends of the zoom range. The lens also has an integrated tripod collar for balanced support when shooting from a tripod and, as a PRO lens, it sports a weather-sealed design that is dust-, moisture-, and freeze-resistant for working in inclement conditions.

Super-telephoto zoom is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 300-800mm-equivalent focal length range.
Built-in 1.25x teleconverter allows you to instantly extend your reach to 187.5-500mm (or 375-1000mm equivalent) simply by flipping a toggle switch. Since the teleconverter is integrated within the lens housing, it is optically matched to the lens for improved imaging performance and also fully maintains the lens's weather sealing.
Constant f/4.5 maximum aperture, without the teleconverter in position, offers consistent illumination throughout the zoom range. When the 1.25x teleconverter is engaged, the maximum aperture is effectively f/5.6.
Advanced optical construction includes one EDA (extra-low dispersion aspherical) element, four Super ED (extra-low dispersion) elements, two ED elements, two HR (high refractive index) elements, and one HD element. These specialized elements help to reduce various aberrations, color fringing, and distortion in order to realize high sharpness, accurate rendering, and vivid clarity.
Z Coating Nano has been applied to individual elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Optical image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake to suit handheld shooting applications and 5-axis Sync IS is also supported to reap the benefits of camera-based sensor-shift IS for even more robust stabilization.
Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system benefits both photo and video applications due to its smooth, quiet, and fast performance.
Focus range limiter allows you to constrict the focus system to 4.3-19.7', 4.3' to infinity, or 19.7' to infinity ranges for faster focusing performance depending on the subject type and distance.
Focus hold buttons are featured on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to settings.
L-Fn (function) switch can be used for lens-based activation of select preset settings modes.
Built using magnesium alloy and carbon fiber components, the lens weighs in at just 4.1 lb and measures 4.6 x 12.4", making it suitable for handheld use.
Dust-, freeze-, and drip-proof design ensure the lens' performance in inclement and harsh conditions. Also, the lens body has a heat-resistant finish and the front lens element sports a fluorine coating for easier cleaning and resistance to smudging and fingerprints.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm produces a smooth bokeh quality.
Tripod collar provides well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod and permits quick switching between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.
Compatible with optional MC-14 1.4x and MC-20 2.0x Teleconverters for even greater reach.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 150-400mm f/4.5 TC 1.... Reviews

Amazing!

I'm one of the fortunate few to own one of these stunning lenes. Game changer for wildlife m4/3rds using the om1 camera body, as it has been exhaustively talked about in other reviews. Here and elsewhere. I can confirm all is true about this lens. No negatives about this lens except the waiting time to receive one. One of the features that no one talks about with this lens, is its macro capability at a 1000mm. Stunning! This lens will focus from 1.3 meters. I shoot mainly wildlife, had this dragon fly as a still subject I decided to give macro a try using small single point S AF mode shot at a 1000mm about 2 meters from subject. Osprey shots were on C AF mode. the one in flight was at 1000mm f5.6, ss 3200, iso 1600, displayed on my laptop I have compared with other shots at 600mm-800mm with absolutely no loss in detail. Amazing. By far my biggest investment in camera gear, and in my eyes putting to rest the indecision between going with m4/3 or FF gear.

Amazing wildlife lens, sent back for an exchange

After a long wait I had this lens for about a week and took hundreds of pictures of birds and wildlife. It is balancing very well on OM-1 or EM1X. It is a perfect match with the OM-1 because of the improved subject recognition and autofocus. The autofocus speed is similar to the autofocus speed of the Olympus 300 mm F4 when using the focus limiters on both. The close focusing ability of the lens with half macro magnification is also amazing. The sharpness and contrast are also similar to Olympus 300 mm F4 Pro with the flexibility of a zoom lens. The weight is very similar to the weight of the Sony 200-600 mm (300-900 mm equivalent on crop body or large resolution sensor in crop mode) full frame lens, however the Sony lens is very front heavy and more uncomfortable to use. The stabilization of 150-400mm f/4.5 TC1.25X IS PRO is at least 2-3 stops better compared to the Sony lens. At 1000 mm equivalent it is possible to handhold the Olympus lens at 1/80-120s shutter speeds. With the 1.4x teleconverter the lens is still sharp, though the image quality and autofocus, particularly in low light, suffers a bit. With the 2x teleconverter the lens is usable, but the image quality, autofocus and stabilization significantly suffers. Overall, I really liked the lens and wanted to keep it. However, using this lens time to time I had blackouts in the viewfinder. OM digital solution support suggested to send the lens for checkup and repair. Instead I sent it back to B&H for replacement. The staff was very professional with the refund an exchange. Unfortunately, it is unpredictable how long I need to wait again for the replacement lens. It is quite frustrating that OM digital solutions is unable to keep up with the demand of their most expensive and probably most profitable lens.

As advertised it took around 6 months between ordering and receiving the lens. On arrival I was blown away by the build quality and balance of the lens. An exceptional lens that can take advantage of the OM-1's new features.

I have purchased camera bodies and many lenses and accessories from B&H over the years and never been disappointed by any aspect of the experience. Both in person at the incredible NYC location and via online, no competitor known to me surpasses the B&H experience whether in inventory, pricing, or team knowledge and attitude.

This lens produces amazing detail and color rendition and can be hand-held through all focal lengths. A terrific lens for bird photography! It is also an amazing night sky photography lens for capturing stars and the moon!!! This lens has the equivalent field of view of a full frame 800mm lens (1,000mm with the teleconverter engaged) and is less than 1/2 the size and cost.

Paired with the OM-1, this kit provides the perfect combination of size, weight and capability when on the road. The build quality is superb as are the optics. The zoom and built-in teleconverter provides flexibility as the distances to subject change. The improved AF on the OM-1 make the most of every opportunity. The image below was captured on the Rio Frio in Costa Rica from a boat.

Easy to carry, super sharp, get real candid pictures with M1X. Using a red dot sight helps. Better than FF competitor's that need fiddling of [i] settings and other focus rigmarole. Maybe I should keep it a secret for competitive reasons :)
