Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 150-400mm f/4.5 TC 1.... Overview

With impressive reach and versatility, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm f/4.5 TC1.25X IS PRO, from Olympus, is a super-telephoto zoom lens characterized by its expansive range, built-in teleconverter, and relatively sleek design for handheld use. Built for Micro Four Thirds cameras, this zoom offers a 300-800mm equivalent focal length range, which can be extended even further using the integrated 1.25x teleconverter for an effective 1000mm equivalent focal length. The constant f/4.5 maximum aperture affords consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and is reduced slightly to f/5.6 when the teleconverter is in use. Additionally, a series of specialized low dispersion and high refractive index elements help to reduce a variety of aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to achieve high clarity and sharpness. A Z Coating Nano has been applied, too, which controls flare and ghosting for higher contrast and accurate color rendering in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the huge zoom range is an apt image stabilization system that compensates for camera shake in order to deliver sharp photos and videos. This system can also work in conjunction with camera-based stabilization, via Sync IS, for even more powerful stabilization to suit working at the extreme ends of the zoom range. The lens also has an integrated tripod collar for balanced support when shooting from a tripod and, as a PRO lens, it sports a weather-sealed design that is dust-, moisture-, and freeze-resistant for working in inclement conditions.

Super-telephoto zoom is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 300-800mm-equivalent focal length range.
Built-in 1.25x teleconverter allows you to instantly extend your reach to 187.5-500mm (or 375-1000mm equivalent) simply by flipping a toggle switch. Since the teleconverter is integrated within the lens housing, it is optically matched to the lens for improved imaging performance and also fully maintains the lens's weather sealing.
Constant f/4.5 maximum aperture, without the teleconverter in position, offers consistent illumination throughout the zoom range. When the 1.25x teleconverter is engaged, the maximum aperture is effectively f/5.6.
Advanced optical construction includes one EDA (extra-low dispersion aspherical) element, four Super ED (extra-low dispersion) elements, two ED elements, two HR (high refractive index) elements, and one HD element. These specialized elements help to reduce various aberrations, color fringing, and distortion in order to realize high sharpness, accurate rendering, and vivid clarity.
Z Coating Nano has been applied to individual elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Optical image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake to suit handheld shooting applications and 5-axis Sync IS is also supported to reap the benefits of camera-based sensor-shift IS for even more robust stabilization.
Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system benefits both photo and video applications due to its smooth, quiet, and fast performance.
Focus range limiter allows you to constrict the focus system to 4.3-19.7', 4.3' to infinity, or 19.7' to infinity ranges for faster focusing performance depending on the subject type and distance.
Focus hold buttons are featured on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to settings.
L-Fn (function) switch can be used for lens-based activation of select preset settings modes.
Built using magnesium alloy and carbon fiber components, the lens weighs in at just 4.1 lb and measures 4.6 x 12.4", making it suitable for handheld use.
Dust-, freeze-, and drip-proof design ensure the lens' performance in inclement and harsh conditions. Also, the lens body has a heat-resistant finish and the front lens element sports a fluorine coating for easier cleaning and resistance to smudging and fingerprints.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm produces a smooth bokeh quality.
Tripod collar provides well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod and permits quick switching between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.
Compatible with optional MC-14 1.4x and MC-20 2.0x Teleconverters for even greater reach.

Why I return to B&H

I have purchased camera bodies and many lenses and accessories from B&H over the years and never been disappointed by any aspect of the experience. Both in person at the incredible NYC location and via online, no competitor known to me surpasses the B&H experience whether in inventory, pricing, or team knowledge and attitude.

So sharp!

I bought into the whole Olympus system to have rugged yet lightweight equipment. Before purchasing this lens I had an Olympus macro 60mm 1/2.3, Olympus 12-40mm1:2.8 pro, Olympus40-150mm 1:2.8 and the Olympus 300mm 1:4 IS pro. I was happy with this set-up and have taken it to Europe, Iceland, Antarctica and Africa. I love wildlife photography. When this lens came out I started watching the review videos. It sounded too good to be true. I ordered it and expected to wait 6 months to a year. Enough time to decide if it was a crazy idea. I got it in 4 months. I've now had the lens almost a month and am using it a lot. The clarity and detail is beyond expectation. The first day i had it I went out to shoot birds, but none to be found. I kept seeing dragon flies, so thought i would try them.. My first shots were handheld, and I was amazed by the results. The detail is truly incredible. Using it with the Oly OMD EM1 MarkIII it weighs 6 lbs. The last couple days I tried it with a monopod and it worked well. The built in TC works seemlessly. I am excited and happy to try to test its limits.

My new favorite lens for wildlife

I took some time for the lens to be delivered, 1st piece I receive (8 months after placing the order) had a manufacturing defect (chipped glass on one of the internal element). Returned and waited for replacement another 5 months. It was worth the wait! Very sharp even with engaged built-in 1.25x teleconverter. A bit heavier than 300 mm PRO lens but still suitable for my hand-held only approach to wildlife photography. The only annoying thing is that the tripod collar can not be removed, but at least it's easily adjustable so it makes for a good handlebar. The focus and zoom rings are great and move smoothly with just right resistance.

Seems great so far

So far I've taken the lens out once since receiving it earlier this month. I was very impressed by it's quality. I used it hand held, on a very windy day, to shoot birds in conjunction with the EM1X. Most of the resulting images, even while at 500mm, were sharp. I'm looking forward being able to enjoy shooting with this on my next wildlife outing.

Love it

This lens is everything that was promised. It's taking some time to get used to the reach hand held. I'm making telephoto images that were tripod dependent- handheld! Love it.

Olympus 150-400mm f/4.5 lens

This lens lives up to the hype. It is very sharp even with the built in 1.25x teleconverter engaged. The focus is fast and accurate at all times. It is so small and lightweight considering its capabilities. While it is hand holdable your technique must be flawless at the longer focal lengths to ensure the tack sharpness the lens is capable of delivering. When used on a tripod it is omnipotent. I'll post some photos I took on my first outing to the zoo. The flamingo head was shot at 500mm and is cropped to only 20% of the original image.

Amazing lens for on the go field work. Super sharp, and fast focusing. Tack sharp with Oly IBIS M1X & M1.3. 'THE' lens for wildlife photographers and moonrise/moonset captures. Do add a 115mm Arca plate for extra length and slighjt rise above a tripod head. The companion IDEAL carry 'ARCO CamCorder Shoulder Bag CS-V15G' UPC [8 47628 00081 0] for lens/M1X combo. The dream package.

This lens produces amazing detail and color rendition and can be hand-held through all focal lengths. A terrific lens for bird photography! It is also an amazing night sky photography lens for capturing stars and the moon!!! This lens has the equivalent field of view of a full frame 800mm lens (1,000mm with the teleconverter engaged) and is less than 1/2 the size and cost.

What benefit is there to the use of a white finish on the lens?
Asked by: Andre
I have read the story on this by Olympus engineers. The lens is not merely white; it has a first coat that is IR-reflecting, covered by a white finish that reflects visible light. The combination of the two results in way less heating from sunlight, which keeps internal dimensions from shifting due to internal heating.

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm f/4.5 TC1.25X IS PRO Lens is a very new lens. And there are not very many out. But at f/4.5 that is very good and about as fast you can get in a zoom lens that is around 150-400mm. So, for low light shooting it is very good. It will not be as good as a lens that is f/2.8 but most lenses that are f/2.8 are not that long a zoom.

Anyone know if and when this lens which actually be delivered? The official OM statement about being overwhelmed by the demand for this lens appears inconsistent with the approach of producing and delivering a small number at a time and only from the factory in Vietnam. This approach seems more consistent with an approach based on poor financing. I note only one user review on the OM website and none on this website.

Some reviewier said that the 150-400+1.4 tc is a little sharper @300 than the 300+1.4 tc. YMMV, take this with a grain of salt.
