DZOFilm Pictor 50-125mm T2.8 Overview

A parfocal cine lens, the DZO Pictor 50 to 125mm T2.8 Super35 Parfocal Zoom Lens features a relatively fast maximum aperture of T2.8 with an aperture range of T2.8 to T22. The 16-blade iris creates round out-of-focus highlights, which have a more natural appearance and contribute to the lens's natural-looking bokeh. The lens features cine-style gear rings on the focus, iris, and zoom lens rings, making it compatible with cine-style lens accessories such as follow focus units, lens motors, and lens control systems. The 95mm outer front diameter allows you to use a variety of compatible third-party matte boxes, and the lens has an 86mm filter thread. A lens support foot allows you to support the lens on rods to help reduce strain on your camera's lens port.

Note:
Please Note: According to the manufacturer, when converted to EF mount this lens is not compatible with DSLR cameras that have an EF mount. However, it is compatible with mirrorless cameras that have an EF mount, including Blackmagic Design cameras.

Very Very Good Lenses

I have the Pictor zoom set I normally use them for my documentary projects . And one good advantage they have is the interchangeable mount. They can be used on both PL and EF mount cameras, they are kinda future proof . One good thing about them too is that they are parfocal meaning if im shooting wide and decide to change my image size by zooming in I dont have to readjust my focus. Pretty good lenses yeah!

Doesn't Cover Full Frame 6K on my C500

Really enjoy using this lens. Having a parfocal lens has added some nice creative potential, and the marking are great, after shimming and changing the mount from PL to EF for my c500 mk II. It completely covers the Super 35 crop with no vignetting, but nowhere near the full frame on the c500. Very heavy vignette. You might still be able to shoot and get a little more than the cropped mode, but not much. Armando Ferreira says the 20-5mm Pictor Zoom covers most of the full frame, and I'm content having the 50-125mm in Super 35. But know what you're getting. The image is really nice, not too sharp like you might expect in a T 2.8 Zoom, but not too soft. Gives a bit of a vintage lens feel. It's heavy, but very well built. The focus, zoom and iris rings are really nice and smooth. The focus throw is really long, and super precise. So it's been great in commercial production. The throw on the zoom is a lot shorter, only a few inches, and really smooth, with almost no breathing! For documentary work and some fun Office like zooms, it's perfect. Just make sure you get your shims right so you can get that true parfocal precision. Overall I've had some regrets over buying this lens, and not renting or trying it first. But, for the price, I know I will get a lot of good use out of it and it will help me grow as a filmmaker. I need to step up and get an easy rig to make this more compatible with my production.

Buyer Beware

My experience with this lens was quite disappointing. I purchased it based on research and reviews about the quality and performance. What I failed to grasp was the nightmare of having to rework the mount and having to use physical metal shims to adjust the focus on this lens. I spent over 6 hours trying to add and remove different thicknesses of shims to make the focus work correctly. After all that time I was unable to get a tight crisp focus and there was significant distortion on the edges. I was unable to resolve this at iris below 8.   However, the most exasperating issue was that the EF mount would not lock onto the lens mount of the BMPCC 6K. Despite 3 attempts to make it work with the lens attached I tried just the EF mount and Shazam! – the mount does not lock - period. No response from manufacturer on my issue as of this review.   I had high hopes for this lens but with the frustration of having to manually calibrate the focus with shims, the failure with the EF mount not locking and the distortion I decided to return this lens. Now it is possible I just got a bad lens but at $2,500.00 I expected that it would at least lock onto the camera body.

EF mount not made right

Finally received the lens and was going to change out the PL mount to the EF mount but the holes to put the screws through the mount to attach to lens aren’t lined up. Basically the mount needs the holes moved 90 degrees one way. Talked to customer service and was told it was impossible to be made wrong and I must be doing something wrong. Still waiting to hear from the DZO reps and hoping to figure out the issues and maybe get a replacement EF mount sent.. otherwise the lens looks nice as a paper weight on my desk!

A very surprising cinema zoom

Bought this and the 20-55 for a few jobs where they will be paired with some Zeiss Superspeed primes. On FX9 they cover up to 5K (about 1.2 crop) easily. They are nice par-focal cinema zooms. They have a pleasant look that is reminiscent of older lenses but they are for sure not 'old' in any way. Modern coating control flaring excellently. They will let a highlight bloom a bit but never ghost the whole frame and wash out your blacks. Very very sharp when in focus but do an interesting thing where it is easy to tell where the focal plane ends and the out of focus begins. Like the micro contrast just melts away. A wonderful set. I have owned the Fujinon MK zooms for a long time so I thought this set might be a duplicate. Not at all. They are on opposite ends of the high end glass spectrum. Fujinons are clean and sharp and clear. The DZOfilm lenses are full of character and texture but also sharp. Hard to put into words but it is very nice.

I purchased both the Pictor lenses and used them on a day 10 commercial shoot and they were just great. I used them on my RED Ranger with Gemini sensor and the images were stunning to say the least. Theres nothing even close to these in this price range as these really can play up there with the must pricier lenses. I rent a lot of glass and always will because not one lens is right for every project but I do know this was a great purchase and these lenses are amazing!!!!

Must read if you're using the EF mount

I purchased two of these lenses to use with my Blackmagic Pocket 6K's and Ursa Mini Pro 4.6K G2. As soon as I installed the EF mount onto the lens I noticed that the lens would not lock onto the camera. It would turn to the point where it was about to lock and then wouldn't. This happened on both lenses on all of my Blackmagic and Canon cameras. I contacted B&H and long story short I returned the two lenses and got two new replacements...and those lenses did the exact same thing! They wouldn't lock no matter what I did. I went to DZO's website and their support page would never load. I was resigned to not being able to use the lenses and started looking for an alternative. As a last ditch effort I decided to email the info email address on the DZO website to try to get help. The next day I got a response from DZO asking for photos of the mounts and my serial numbers. It is a known issue with DZO that they had a whole batch of faulty EF mounts that shipped with lenses. In less than a week they shipped me replacement EF mounts from China that ended up working perfectly. I've attached the photos they sent me of the faulty mount and the correct mount. B&H was unaware of the issue and didn't have a way to contact DZO directly.  I'm very satisfied with the image produced by this lens. I have not found it's equal at this price point. It is heavier than you think it would be. If you are coming from using DSLR lenses prepare for this to be heavier than any 70-200mm DSLR lens that you've used (just a point of comparison).

My review is a big *asterisk*

First I'll start by saying this is the first big boy lens I have owned. I've upgraded from using a BMPCC 4k with photographic lenses to an Ursa with this lens. I have zero experience with professional equipment but I fo have a very solid understanding of how to use a camera. With that said this lens gives me far more capabilities than what I'm used to. The longer throw focus and better aperature across the whole focal length is day and night compared to photographic lenses but if you are in the market for something like this than you already know that. The only thing I'll say bad about this lens is its ability to hold focus. It comes with PL mount out of the box and the hardware for an EF. I had it swapped to EF by a local professional camera retailer. Its my first parafocal lens. I expected it to hold perfect focus throughout its zoom range especially since the flange was swapped by a professional AND I gave them my camera to make sure everything was tip top. From my eye it seems the focus shifts slightly. Focusing a subject at full zoom then pulling out seems to pull the focus a bit. This is also reflected by focus assist/peaking. It is minuscule though and difficult to perceive unless looking for it. For me it's an incredibly useful lens. The price compared to other lenses is what sold me. Hope this was helpful to someone!

The flange of these lenses won't work with a standard canon EF extender. I have not tried with a PL extender, but that may be a suitable workaround.
