Works very well on my 70-180 Z lens. Provides extra reach and excellent image quality. Using on my z8 really enjoy the lightweight combo.

More Reach!

If you need more reach, the Nikon Z TC-1.4x is the teleconverter that could be just what you need. Attaching the Nikon Z TC-1.4x to a Nikkor 400mm f/4.5 lens providing 560mm of reach will not give you enough extra reach to photograph small brown birds or small blue birds for that matter. If you are photographing small birds at a distance, save your money and purchase the Nikkor 800mm PF lens, the Nikkor 180-600mm with the Nikon Z TC-1.4x attached or the oh-so- sweet Nikon Nikkor Z 600mm f/4 with the 1.4 teleconverter built in to reach out to the smaller birds or more distant targets. If you want to fill the frame, you could always choose a larger bird or elephants at a very far distance. I do find the Nikon Z Teleconverter TC-1.4x to work very well when attached to the Nikkor 400mm f/4.5 lens, photographing bighorn sheep and mountain goats on Mt Evans in Colorado last week. This lens and teleconverter worked very well when coupled with the Nikon Z8 body. B&H provides just what you need to make your photographic outing a pleasure. Coming up on my 85 birthday this August makes me want to be in the high Colorado Rockys every day rather than the100+deg temps in the Dallas, TX area.

Upgrade from F-mount teleconverters

I have owned 2 F-mount teleconverters in the past and was never really satisfied with the results. This Z teleconverter has very little if any loss in image quality, and it enabled me to sell off the last of my F-mount gear along with my FTZ adapter as it will be all Z mount from now on. Works very well with the Z 400 4.5, it matched the 500PF very closely, very hard to see any difference in tests done on tripod.

Good Resolution

Used with my Z6 and the Z400 f4.5 lens, the lowest aperture available is 6.3. Also, the automatic focus ts a bit slower, particularly near minimum focus. The resolution is very good even with cropped, long distance bird shots.

Very Good TC

My first version F-Mount TC's do not do well with my Nikon lens collections so I was very skeptical about TC's in general. After I did a lot of research so I gave the Nikon Z TC-1.4x a chance. After I took many photos with my 100-400mm and TC-1.4x, I am satisfied with the combo which delivers decent sharpness even though the AF-C speed sacrifices a little bit.

An earlier Q&A noted that the opening on the back of the FTZ adapter was not large enough for the extended piece of this teleconverter to fit inside. Does the FTZ II rectify this issue so that the FTZ II and this Z teleconverter can be used together?

Unfortunately, the Nikon Z Teleconverter TC-1.4X was not intended to be used with the FTZ or FTZ II. This is by design.
