When you really need that extra reach

I have the Nikon Z8 with the 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 lens and used the 2.0x teleconverter to make it a 1200mm full frame lens. I switched my camera to DX mode which makes the lens equivalent to 1800mm. There are several examples of wildlife photography as well using the 2.0x teleconverter.

I'm using it with Nikkor Z 70-200/2.8 and Z3III/Z9. I also have TC-1.4x. The idea behind was to have a relatively light and small package allowing me to roam a city when looking for stray cats. This way I can get 70/2.8 to 400/5.6 and up to 600/5.6 when switching to DX on Z9. The picture quality of 2x is visibly worse than 1.4x and require more enhancements in Adobe Lightroom. Depends on object, lighting and noise (ISO) is possible to get useful, but not a great picture. Not a good surprise was a bokeh: it looks totally different from for example 500/5.6 or 600/6.3. Brush or bark in the background looks much sharper/higher contrast than with primes, which are more creamy. Again, it's works for me for scouting locations, but for real work I come back with primes or even Z 180-600/5.6-6.3.

According to Nikon's website, yes, the Nikon Z Teleconverter TC-2x is compatible for use with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S lens.

The Nikon Z Teleconverter TC-2x will not work on the Z8 when using the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens with the FTZ II adapter. The lens will work with out the teleconverter and the FTZ II. Or you can use with the lens and the adapter this teleconverter, BH #NITC20E3(https://bhpho.to/3R2Exad).

I don’t know the answer to this question. I would think no! The smaller lenses tend to not work with te teleconverters, however Nikon’s website on the lens and the teleconverter will tell you what they are compatible with!

Compatibility issues in some cases seem to be ...

Compatibility issues in some cases seem to be more mechanical/coupling than electrical/contacts. A Q&A answer by Ryan (B&H Staff) under the Z TC-1.4x teleconverter noted that that teleconverter won't work with the FTZ because the opening on the back of the FTZ Adapter is not large enough for the extending piece of the teleconverter to fit inside. As the diameter of the extending piece of this Z TC-2x teleconverter is distinctly smaller than that of the Z TC-1.4x, would this teleconverter work with the redesigned FTZ II adapter?

We tested the FTZ II with the Nikon Z Teleconverter TC-2X and while the optical tube does indeed fit into the FTZ II, the FTZ II and TC-2X were unable to couple correctly or lock into each other. Unfortunately this means they are by design not compatible. Furthermore, the extended optical tube likely needs to be as close as possible to the rear element in order to function correctly, and when mounted onto the FTZ II from behind would likely not allow the teleconverter to function correctly with your F-mount lens even if it was able to couple to the FTZ II adapter.
