Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S Overview

By B&H Photo's

Ultra-wide with a flexible-yet-exacting design, the NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S from Nikon is a wide-angle zoom distinguished by its advanced optical design and bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture. This fast design suits working in low-light conditions when shooting handheld and also offers improved depth of field control. The optical system utilizes four extra-low dispersion elements and three aspherical elements, which reduce a variety of aberrations and distortion in order to achieve high sharpness and clarity along with accurate rendering of subjects and point light sources, such as stars. ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats, as well as a Super Integrated Coating, have also been applied to suppress flare, ghosting, and surface reflections for improved contrast and color fidelity.

Complementing the optical design, a stepping motor helps to realize impressively fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to suit both stills and video needs. The lens also has a unique physical design, which incorporates a top OLED information panel that can be used to quickly confirm aperture and focus settings, and an assignable L.Fn button permits making exposure and settings adjustments via the lens. Two lens hoods are included with the Z 14-24mm f/2.8 depending on working needs: the HB-96 maintains a sleeker overall size while the HB-97 hood gives the unique advantage of permitting 112mm threaded filters to be attached. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Ultra-wide zoom is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras but can also be used with DX models where it provides a 21-36mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and using selective focus techniques.
Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Four extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction. A Super Integrated Coating is also featured on multiple elements to help ensure consistently accurate colors.
Stepping motor offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Integrated OLED lens information panel allows you to quickly confirm aperture setting, focus distance, and depth of field figures right on the lens in both bright and dark situations.
Assignable L.Fn button works in conjunction with camera based Fn buttons to provide a seamless point for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
When the included HB-97 Lens Hood is attached, 112mm threaded filters can be used on the front of the lens. The rear of the lens also incorporates a slot for inserting cut gels and other filter sheets.

I'd like to use this with a Matt Box on a Film Shoot. However, I don't see a 112mm Matt Box. Any advice?
Asked by: Rajnesh
There aren't currently clamp-on 112mm matte boxes for the Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S Lens. What one would need to use is a rod-mounted matte box with a rear opening of 120mm or so or larger, and a donut to then go over the lens.

How is it for city light starbursts? I'm looking for a wide lens for city lights. I really love voigtlander starbursts but I see they are limited so far with the Z Mount.
Asked by: Laura
The Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S Lens may be used for city light starbursts if you use a small aperture on the lens (i.e., f/11, f/16, or f/22). As the lens has nine (9) aperture blades and lenses with an odd number of aperture blades create twice as many starbursts, this lens would produce 18-point starbursts.

What's the best way to put graduated neutral ...

What's the best way to put graduated neutral density filters on this (112mm diameter) lens? I see only one screw on Nisi 0.6 gnd filter that's part of a kit. But what if I want a 0.3,, 0.6 and 0.9 gnd filters? Is there a Matte box with a variety of square 4x4 gnd filters for this lens?
Asked by: Shane
You can use 112mm screw on filter with the Nikon HB-97 Lens Hood for Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S Lens or (100 x 100) square filters with a holder. You will need a holder with a dedicated adapter to Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S Lens. Most holders accepted 2mm thick 100 x 100mm or 100 x 150mm filters (graduated NDs) Nisi makes a full variation of ND filters under the size needed.

Does it have front screw mount filters? If so what size? Prior G lens was so convex that you had to buy big adapters.
Asked by: Nikon user
I purchased a Chiaro 112 uv filter and the screws in the filter did not match up perfectly with the Nikon filter mount. It seemed to work, but while out on a job suddenly fell out and broke into pieces on a nearby rock. Be real careful which lens filter you purchase. B&H rep said the Chiaro was fine, but the way it connects is snarky. Only go with a Nikon recommended filter.
