Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S Overview

By B&H Photo's

Ultra-wide with a flexible-yet-exacting design, the NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S from Nikon is a wide-angle zoom distinguished by its advanced optical design and bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture. This fast design suits working in low-light conditions when shooting handheld and also offers improved depth of field control. The optical system utilizes four extra-low dispersion elements and three aspherical elements, which reduce a variety of aberrations and distortion in order to achieve high sharpness and clarity along with accurate rendering of subjects and point light sources, such as stars. ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats, as well as a Super Integrated Coating, have also been applied to suppress flare, ghosting, and surface reflections for improved contrast and color fidelity.

Complementing the optical design, a stepping motor helps to realize impressively fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to suit both stills and video needs. The lens also has a unique physical design, which incorporates a top OLED information panel that can be used to quickly confirm aperture and focus settings, and an assignable L.Fn button permits making exposure and settings adjustments via the lens. Two lens hoods are included with the Z 14-24mm f/2.8 depending on working needs: the HB-96 maintains a sleeker overall size while the HB-97 hood gives the unique advantage of permitting 112mm threaded filters to be attached. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Ultra-wide zoom is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras but can also be used with DX models where it provides a 21-36mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and using selective focus techniques.
Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Four extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction. A Super Integrated Coating is also featured on multiple elements to help ensure consistently accurate colors.
Stepping motor offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Integrated OLED lens information panel allows you to quickly confirm aperture setting, focus distance, and depth of field figures right on the lens in both bright and dark situations.
Assignable L.Fn button works in conjunction with camera based Fn buttons to provide a seamless point for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
When the included HB-97 Lens Hood is attached, 112mm threaded filters can be used on the front of the lens. The rear of the lens also incorporates a slot for inserting cut gels and other filter sheets.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S Reviews

Sold off the 14-30mm f/4 for a chance to up my game

By Gary

I thought that I could save a few bucks by going with the 14-30mm Z lens, but the multiple distortions were a real problem for the interiors that I shoot. Way too much time (and frame edges) was lost in fixing every shot. So in switching, getting an extra f/stop is nice, but not the biggest reason for making this switch. While the 14-24mm f/2.8 is not a real rectilinear lens, it has better control of distortion and has greater edge to edge sharpness. That and other benefits explains why the 14-24mm is basically twice the price. If you're on the fence trying to decide which wide angle zoom you will ultimately buy, and you are a serious interior and landscapes photographer, don't waste your time just to save a few bucks.

Not as sharp as expected

I've just tried it out in the back yard so far; sharper than the Z 14-30 I returned, but not as sharp as expected in the corners or very far from the point of focus. I was hoping the sharpness/detail would be like my excellent Z 24-70 f/2.8. This is my first ultra-wide zoom, and based on reviews I was expecting to be impressed. I'm not sure if I got a bad copy or if my expectations were just too high. I guess I'll keep it and try to make the best of it. Like I said, it is better than the 14-30.

A DREAM for LANDSCAPES

I have only used the Z-mount version of this lens for a short while, but I really love it so far. For many years I owned the F-mount version of this lens in AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 and really liked it for landscape and architectural photography. In my short experience this Z-mount version really surpasses the previous lens in contrast, sharpness and color rendering (especially the blues). I also like that it is a reasonably light lens which makes it easy to carry during hikes and long photo outings. The only drawback might be that it uses 112mm filters - I chose a B+W UV/HAZE and really think it complements the performance of the lens. For me, its a keeper.

Bought one 10/10 condition from B&H and was perfect!

I was looking at getting this lens for a while. B&H Used had one on sales being advertised as 10/10 Like New. I purchased it. The lens arrived in original box and with all pertinent documents inside. It was brand spankin' new... Thank you B&H! The lens itself is a dynamite. Crazy sharp, lightweight, fast. The front lens hood with filter (also bought on B&H Nisi 112mm UV) attached does get to be quite large, but it's the nature of the beast with a 2.8 lens.

Great image quality, bad distortion

I rented this and then bought it because the IQ is incredible. The focus is also superb. But the more I shoot with it, the more I realize how awful the distortion is at the wider end of the lens. I am considering selling it to go with a 24mm prime and maybe a 14 or 20.

Great with Z6 II

I needed this as I switched from D 850's to a Z7ii and an astro modified Z6ii and did not want to use an adapter with my beloved Sigma Art 14-24, its heavy enough as is. My Sigma Art 14-24 was exceptional for Milky Way photography and I was hoping for at least equivalent image quality and this lens delivers. It as as good or maybe a bit better at corner sharpness and coma, but very close and being maybe a bit better or very close to my Sigma Art makes this a great lens.

How is it for city light starbursts? I'm looking for a wide lens for city lights. I really love voigtlander starbursts but I see they are limited so far with the Z Mount.
Asked by: Laura
The Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S Lens may be used for city light starbursts if you use a small aperture on the lens (i.e., f/11, f/16, or f/22). As the lens has nine (9) aperture blades and lenses with an odd number of aperture blades create twice as many starbursts, this lens would produce 18-point starbursts.

Does it have front screw mount filters? If so what size? Prior G lens was so convex that you had to buy big adapters.
Asked by: Karl
I purchased a Chiaro 112 uv filter and the screws in the filter did not match up perfectly with the Nikon filter mount. It seemed to work, but while out on a job suddenly fell out and broke into pieces on a nearby rock. Be real careful which lens filter you purchase. B&H rep said the Chiaro was fine, but the way it connects is snarky. Only go with a Nikon recommended filter.
