Sony MRW-G2 Reviews

Disappointing

Does what it's supposed to... most of the time. For the price it should be all the time. When it reads a CF card it usually hauls beautifully, but one out of four or five times, no matter the card or computer, it drops down to USB3 speeds, which sure means a long copy time for a slew of 120meg RAW files. No predicting when the slow down will happen or what card or what computer. I'll keep it since I need the CF card reading ability, but a customer might want to check out other brands before purchasing.

Stopped working. Pretty lame.

Now I have to offload cards through the camera, which is not a tenable field solution when on a shoot. Wasted money.

Crashes

Every time I try to use it with Sony's Tough 160GB CF Express A card it crashes. Windows finds the drive then loses the drive over and over. Makes it impossible to use.

Expensive yes but super fast!

If you need/want to download your files into your computer very fast, then look no more, this is the right Sony card reader for you. Just make sure to use the included cable from Sony.

Good reader

Very handy to have when using any CFExpress Type A Sony card. Construction is metal so provides good heat dissipation. On the negative side, it is not cheap and does not have a separate SD card slot (like one of its competitors) so taking one star off for that.

Great, Super Fast, Does the Job

This is great, its super fast, does get a little warm, but transfers significantly faster than all other methods.

Little heavy but feels really well made, chuck in your camera bag and no need to worry about it getting trashed. Works as it should

Stopped working - TWO OF THEM

I have purchased two of the Sony CFexpress card readers. Both lasted for 3-4 months before ceasing to work. Pretty lame for such an expensive card reader!

Transfer speed would be determined by the USB-c cable so if it's the same cable and same cards - no difference

I was testing the Sony MRW-G2 with the Sony 160GB CFexpress Type A on my computer and uploaded 100GB of data to it using USB 3 on Windows 10. My upload speed averaged150 MB/s, and my download speed averaged 500 MB/s. USB-3 supports 625 MB/s, and my hard drive is 2000 MB/s. Why is the upload speed so slow?
Asked by: Diane
If you are connecting to a hub between the computer and the reader that slows down the transfer rate. Also check the cache that your SSD has. If the cache is 2GB but you are transferring 256GB once it hits 2GB the transfer rate will slow down a lot. SSD vendors always advertise their performance based on the cached area. They never advertise the performance based on writing 256GB of data in a cached area of only 2GB.
