Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art Overview

By B&H Photo's
A classic portrait-length lens updated for full-frame Leica L-mount mirrorless systems, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN is an Art-series prime characterized by its advanced and updated optical design, sleek profile, and bright design.
As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Portrait-length lens is designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras but can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 127.5mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is particularly well-suited for working in available light conditions and provides extensive control over depth of field for isolating subject matter with selective focus.
Five Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements markedly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.
One aspherical element and four high refractive index glass elements control spherical aberrations and distortion for increased sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Integrated stepping motor realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance.
Manual aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications. Additionally, a dedicated aperture ring lock switch can also be employed to prevent accidental shifting of the aperture setting.
Built-in Autofocus-Lock (AFL) button which can be assigned additional functions widens the range of operations available on the lens.
Rounded eleven-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Weather-resistant construction with a brass bayonet that affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma UD-11 USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

This is absolutely an amazing lens. Not only is the build top notch but the bokeh is beautiful and the photos are tack sharp. I have it on my A7RV and it delivers super sharp images on a high resolution camera. Highly recommended!

An awesome 85mm lens that takes amazing portraits. The details and microcontrast have to be seen. Great bokeh, and I find it amazing when you consider how small this lens is. A fabulous lens!!

I evaluated this one against the Sony G-Master 85mm f1.4, and it was slightly better in performance, lighter, smaller and cheaper. I have purchased several Sigma Art lenses, and they are superb.

best cost benefit between sharpness and market value. It's worth it if you're a beginner and if you're already a veteran of photography. Go for it guys!

For clarity I photograph birds and don't own any other small lenses. I wanted something to photograph my family with and a good friend told me that I should get this lens. Another friend who shoots weddings told me to get an 85 as well. So I bought this to go with my A1 and wow what a great purchase. The lens is well made, small and light. And the images are crazy sharp with great contrast and beautiful bokeh. I could not be happier with this purchase. To be fair I did not test it against the Sony 85 or any other 85 but I don't need or want to. This lens is perfect for my needs. And my wife who does not like to be in front of the camera is happy with the focal length as I am not right on top of her.

If you are looking for a fast 85mm 1.4 lens for your sony e-mount, look no further. This lens has great IQ and focusing. Don't waste your money on the Sony GM 85mm; get this instead you will not be disappointed.

How does this lens compared to the Sony 85 1.8 lens? The 85 mm lens is my most used lens for outdoor portraits work and also for my studio shoots. I'm debating between the Sigma vs the Sony 85 mm 1.8 lens.
Asked by: RAJAN
This lens is much sharper, bokeh smoother, and overall a much better lens than the Sony 1.8. It also is very possibly superior to its brother the Sony 1.4 IMO. The Sony 85 1.8 is a high value lens in its own right for the price but after shooting with both I much prefer the Sigma 1.4.

I can also vouch for this, I have the lens, and it focuses very well for photos AND video, even in low light! Sigma has a real winner on their hands with this lens. It's magic :)

I own this lens and love it for studio work. In my opinion, the images are amazing. Does anyone know how the image quality compares to the Sigma 105mm F/1.4? I know the 105 is a beast. I don't care about the size and weight difference - only the image output and performance. Would you add the 105 if you already have this 85mm lens?
Asked by: James
I used to own the 105mm 1.4 and now own the 85 1.4. In terms of optics they're both very very sharp. The 105mm though has a very distinct look that the 85mm can't match. If weight and size isn't a big factor for you, the 105mm is definitely the way to go. I only let it go because the weight was too much for me.
