Plus, the headphones detect when you're wearing them and start and stop your audio for you.

Noise cancellation is accomplished with Sony's dedicated HD Noise-Canceling QN1 processor and Sense Engine. Sense Engine is designed to automatically adjust the level of ambient sound based on your environment. If quick communication is needed, simply speak to chat without audio playing or just cover the right earcup with your hand to monitor the outside world.

When it comes to what you do hear, the WH-1000XM4 headphones use DSEE Extreme audio upscaling to perform genre- and instrument-based optimization of the sound, and they support LDAC, AAC, and SBC codecs. When used with a compatible source device, LDAC transmits approximately three times more data, up to 990 kb/s, compared to conventional Bluetooth. This is meant to make your high-resolution audio content sound even better when it's played back through the 1.57" drivers with LCP diaphragms (liquid crystal polymer).

Whether you're looking for peace and quiet while working from home or you want an ideal pair of headphones for traveling, Sony crafted the noise-canceling WH-1000XM4 to be both convenient (with support for Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant) and comfortable, thanks to the soft, pressure-relieving earpads and the lightweight design.

High-Tech Noise Cancellation
Dual noise sensor technology, featuring two microphones on each earcup, captures ambient noise and passes the data to the HD Noise Canceling Processor QN1. Using a new algorithm, the HD Noise-Canceling Processor QN1 then applies noise cancellation processing in real time to a range of acoustic environments.

Working together with a new Bluetooth Audio SoC (system on chip), it senses and adjusts to music and noise signals, as well as acoustic characteristics between the driver unit and ears, at over 700 times per second.
Adaptive Sound Control
Adaptive Sound Control is a smart function that can learn to recognize locations you frequently visit, such as your workplace or favorite café, and tailor sound for the ideal listening experience. In addition, it automatically detects what you're up to—walking, waiting or traveling—then adjusts ambient sound settings to suit the situation.
Optimized Noise Canceling
The WH-1000XM4 headphones incorporate two technologies to maximize noise-canceling performance. Unique Atmospheric Pressure Optimizing delivers optimal sound at high altitude, while Personal Noise Cancellation Optimizer analyzes unique sonic characteristics caused by head size, glasses, and hair, then tailors sound to you.
Wearing Detection
A proximity sensor in the WH-1000XM4 headphones can detect whether you're wearing them or not, then adapt playback accordingly to help save battery power. Take off your headphones and the music pauses automatically. Put the headphones back on and the music automatically resumes.
Speak-to-Chat Convenience
As soon as you speak to someone, Speak-to-Chat automatically stops the music and lets in ambient sound so you can conduct a conversation—handy if you want to keep your headphones on or your hands are full. Based on Precise Voice Pickup Technology, this smart feature uses five microphones built into the headphones and advanced audio signal processing to recognize and react to your voice. Once your chat is over, your music starts playing again automatically.
Quick Attention
Regardless of the level of noise-cancelation, the Quick Attention features lets you quickly hear your environment, whether it's to hear an emergency announcement or have a quick conversation. Simply place your hand over the housing of the right earcup to quiet things down so you can hear.
Sony Headphones Connect App
Adjust ambient sound with the Sony | Headphones Connect app to cancel noise while still allowing essential sounds, like transport announcements, through when you're listening on the move. Ambient Sound Control lets you adjust the volume of background sound and gives you the option to allow voices alone to be heard. Meanwhile the Equalizer lets you customize sound levels to suit your music.
Voice Assistant Integration
When the WH-1000XM4 headphones are paired with your smartphone, you can use them to access the phone's voice assistant. Ask it questions and have it perform tasks just like you would normally do; enjoy entertainment, connect with friends, get information, listen to music and notifications, set reminders, and more.
Hands-Free Calling
Conversation flows freely with easy, hands-free calling. Leave your phone where it is, just speak with a double tap. Thanks to Precise Voice Pickup Technology, which combines five built-in microphones with advanced audio signal processing, WH-1000XM4 delivers clearer voice quality to the other person on the phone.
Hi-Res Audio
A built-in analog amplifier integrated in the HD Noise-Canceling Processor QN1 realizes a pristine signal-to-noise ratio for low distortion and exceptional sound quality for portable devices. DSEE Extreme Audio Upscaling
Using Edge-AI (Artificial Intelligence) co-developed with Sony Music Entertainment, DSEE Extreme (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) upscales compressed digital music files in real time. These headphones worked as intended and I feel did a great job cancelling noise and worked great for music and online meetings for work which was my biggest use. However after two months they broke placing them on my head. No, I don't have a big head and I wasn't rough with them. They appear to have a weak spot in them. maybe they fixed this with the newer version. As you can see by the photo I had probably only put them on my head about 30 times.

Does all the features it says and sounds great for the most part. The only issue is the touch pad is like a smart phone so if you wash your hands a lot to the point it's chapped it might not recognize your touch. I work in the medical field and I wash my hands so much the bio id on computers won't recognize my fingerprint. If this is your same issue then you may have similar problems working this headphone. My solution use your pinky or some other finger you don't wash as much to swipe the controls. Also I don't care for 360 audio as most recordings aren't recorded that way yet, but it's ok to know it's 360 ready I suppose.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] These are the best headphones I've ever owned. Period. It's not just that the noise-canceling capability is phenomenal (it is), it's also that the sound quality is fantastic. When I tried them out at home, I was stunned with the sudden silence they provided before listening to music. When I tried them on an airline flight, they not only provided magnificent sound with the engine noise gone (not just reduced) but also helped create a relaxing environment for the trip. The right ear has touch controls; just swipe a finger up/down for volume and forward/back for next or previous song. Cover the ear to quickly deactivate noise-canceling to hear announcements or conversations whenever needed. These headphones are simple, easy, and intuitive, and they're everything you would expect from Sony.

I wanted a good pair of headphones and i researched a bit and Sony XM4 were a good option. I was considering Soundcore Space q45 only cause it was a cheaper option but due to the black Friday sale and student discount,.it was worth $50 more than the q45. The noise cancellation is amazing and that's what i was looking for. They have a comfortable fit.

Screeching noise when ANC active

Loved at first...but just over a year and I started getting this intermittent high-frequency screeching noise from the right ear cup...goes away when I turn ANC off... an internet search seems like I'm not the only one experiencing this issue. Since past warranty Sony was no help...for the price I would expect a little lee-way on a warranty for one year!?! I'm thinking of replacing but with my experience with the XM4 I thing I'll go with the Bose 700 v the XM5

They work amazing - but one ear is getting staticy

I bought them in Feb 2022 - they worked great all up until the last 2 trips I took. I only use them when I fly - as its the only time I need over the ear headphones. So total I probably used them around 30 times at an average of 2.5 hrs of use.. so VERY minimal use. and one of the ears has a lot of static when playing sound. it started off minimal but now its getting to the point where they are hard to use. hoping the warranty actually works out - since I got 1 month left. but we will see. updates to come when I find out.

Poor performance for what I wanted

I bought this two years ago for listening to music while I practice dancing with other music playing. What I found out is that this head set is very sensitive to movement and it will turn on or off if I cough, moving my head a bit quickly. If all you need is to walk around and listen to music, then it is OK. However, after about half an hour or so, I found the tight headset is very uncomfortable. I have now been using my old Panasonic wired headset which is much comfortable than this. The noise cancellation works and music listening is fine. However, if you want to wear it for running or dancing, then look for something else.

The sensitivity on the Bose QC 35ii is 100 dB(decibels), the Sony 1000XM4 has a sensitivity of 105dB so it requires less power and goes up slightly louder
