FUJIFILM XF 50mm f/1.0 R WR Overview

By B&H Photo's

It's all about speed with the FUJIFILM XF 50mm f/1.0 R WR; a portrait-length prime lens featuring an impressive and unique f/1.0 maximum aperture. This bright design benefits working in low-light conditions and, especially coupled with the short tele focal length, also affords immense control over depth of field for isolating subject matter with selective focus. A Super EBC coating also suppresses flare and ghosting for greater contrast when working in bright and backlit conditions. Additionally, complementing the optics is a fast-performing DC autofocus motor and a robust physical design that is weather-sealed to suit working in trying environmental conditions.

Prime portrait-length lens is designed for APS-C-format FUJIFILM X-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 76mm equivalent focal length.
Exceptionally bright f/1.0 maximum aperture excels in difficult lighting conditions and also provides impressive control over depth of field for isolating subject matter using selective focus techniques.
One aspherical element limits distortion and spherical aberration in order to realize greater sharpness and accurate rendering.
Two extra-low dispersion elements reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
Super EBC coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
DC autofocus motor is well-suited moving the large elements and helps to realize quick, accurate, and smooth focusing performance.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality to benefit the use of selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.
Weather-resistant design incorporates 11 distinct seals that prevent dust and moisture from entering the lens and to enable worry-free use in inclement conditions and freezing temperatures as low as 14°F.

FUJIFILM XF 50mm f/1.0 R WR Reviews

Best Fuji X lens out there

I was looking for that one lens to rely on to pair with my xpro3 and after copious amounts of reading and viewing review videos, I went for it and I absolutely love it. The build quality is top of the class with nothing flimsy or finicky, just pure solid build with clean pro look. Autofocus is actually really impressive, though some reviews may say otherwise, I have no issues with it. The wide open 1.0 aperture is dreamy and crisp at the same time and the bokeh is just sooooo creamy, it's a little ridiculous. I think I might shoot more shots wide open than I would with other lenses, because it's just got that great balance of clarity and dreamy backgrounds. Even with auto adjusting iso, I can shoot with iso 200 @ 1/500 in a dimly lit room and still get a bright clear shot - it's amazing. Hefty lens for sure, but you know you're getting a great lens. Glad I pilled the trigger on this.

Better than anticipated...

Without a doubt my new fave on the XT3. I do a lot of event photography and really don't like using flash. This lens is remarkable in low light. You can bump the ISO up and still get insanely beautiful results. Maybe rent first before you buy but in my opinion a definite must-buy!

I sold my 56 1.2 for this lens and I must say I'm glad I did. This lens is just as sharp wide open and is quicker to focus than the 56 1.2 but it is substantial - you feel both the weight and the superb quality of the lens. For video the autofocus is not as reliable but for photos I hardly miss a shot. If you don't mind the weight you'd love it. It is more than twice the weight of the 56 and it's also larger and heavier than the Viltrox 85 1.8.

Disappointed

After having 90mm f2 35mm f2 10-24mm and 16-55mm from fuji and a lot of sony sigma lenses for sony e mount, I am extremely disappointed with this lens. Ugly glare, for some reason never sharp after 15-20meters distance, heavy, long with lens hood, slow af which demands the subject to stay still, mediocre sharpness... I sold it and bought Laowa argus 33mm f0.95, way sharper, better in everyway, character, sharpness, usability etc. Only possible donwside is flare which I find it very characteristic... I dont recommend this fuji at all, and I recommend all the others listed above...

Wow!

Yes, this is heavy, but the sharpness, clarity and color rendition make this a joy to use! I love it, I just love it.

Photos: Very nice. The f/1.0 is needed for best Bokeh. Kai Wong and Lok Chung, The digital Rev guys; would love it. I adjusted the ISO. Used f/1.0 For video, Get used to manual focus. Can be used, but you need manual.

Is this a video, and photo, or photo only lens?

Best for photo, but decent for video. It has very confident focusing, with very little hunting, but not lightning fast, so in general it's good for most video as it doesn't hunt or breath. That being said it's loud, but not loud enough that it's a problem if you're using external mic stuff.

While this will mount without issue, the ergonomics/balance of the system will lean a little front heavy as the lens is larger than the camera. Overall comfort will depending on several factors, such as your stamina, hand/grip size, etc.
