Panasonic Lumix GH5S Mirrorless Camera

Proving that they can push the GH-series even farther into the video realm, the Panasonic Lumix GH5S is a mirrorless Micro Four Thirds camera optimized for movie recording and low-light performance. Revolving around a 10.28MP Digital Live MOS sensor, DCI and UHD 4K video recording is possible at up to 60p and the large individual pixel size also affords impressive low-light performance to an extended ISO 204800, along with Dual Native ISO technology at ISO 400 and ISO 2500. Coupled with an updated Venus Engine, the sensor and processor combination also enables faster readout speeds along with 1.3x less rolling shutter distortion compared to previous GH-series cameras. Internal DCI 4K30p recording is available with 4:2:2 10-bit sampling and a full-size HDMI A connector can be used to simultaneously output to an optional external monitor or recorder. The sensor's extended sensitivity range has also been used to promote working with V-Log L and Hybrid Log Gamma HDR modes for effectively increasing your dynamic range and affording more flexibility when color grading during post-production.

Beyond its video prowess, the GH5S is no slouch when it comes to stills shooting, either. The sensor and Venus Engine combination enable recording 14-bit raw files with a top continuous shooting rate of 12 fps with single-shot AF, or up to 8 fps with continuous autofocus. Borrowing from the video side, 4K PHOTO modes are also available for shooting 8MP stills at up to 60 fps. Benefitting stills, the Depth-From-Defocus AF system works quickly and accurately using 225 dedicated AF areas, and is sensitive to -5 EV luminance for working in extreme low-light conditions.

Beyond imaging specs, the GH5S retains its professional build quality the GH-series is known for. The magnesium alloy body is fully weather-sealed for working in inclement conditions, and physical controls have been enhanced for easier tactile control. A large 3.68m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder is featured, for high-resolution eye-level monitoring, as well as a rear 3.2" 1.62m-dot LCD touchscreen with free-angle movement to suit working from high and low angles. Dual UHS-II SD memory card slots are available for flexible file recording and built-in Wi-Fi with NFC and Bluetooth wireless connectivity enable seamless image sharing and remote camera control from a mobile device.

10.28MP Digital Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine

Using Multipixel Luminance Generation and Intelligent Detail Processing, it will maximize sharpness and detail as well as accuracy in a variety of lighting conditions.

The sensor features a multi aspect ratio design, which enables the use of 4:3, 17:9, 16:9, and 3:2 ratios for shooting stills, recording DCI and UHD 4K, and for working in Anamorphic mode. This unique design allows you to maintain a lens's native angle of view despite changing the image format. Additionally, the sensor and processor combination avails high readout speeds and suppresses rolling shutter distortion by approximately 1.3x compared to the GH5 when recording video or working with the electronic shutter.

The sensor's deliberately low-resolution design, and subsequently larger pixel size, also optimizes it for low-light performance and enables recording a greater dynamic range. Borrowing from Panasonic's broadcast line of video cameras, Dual Native ISO technology is used that sets ISO 400 and ISO 2500 as base sensitivities for low noise levels. The overall native sensitivity range runs from ISO 160-51200, and can be extended to ISO 80-204800.
DCI and UHD 4K Video Recording
Specifically geared for video shooting, the GH5S features a versatile and capable range of video specs, including the ability to internally record DCI 4K at up to 60 fps and 150 Mbps with 4:2:0 8-bit Long GOP; 30 fps and 150 Mbps with 4:2:2 10-bit Long GOP; and 24 fps and 400 Mbps with 4:2:2 10-bit ALL-I. UHD 4K recording is also supported along with Full HD at up to 240 fps for slow-motion playback. A full-size HDMI port is present on the camera for high-quality output at 4:2:2 10-bit in all settings for use with external monitors and recorders.

Optimizing your recording for post-production color adjustment, the GH5S features a pair of gamma settings suited to capturing a wide dynamic range. V-Log L has been pre-installed on this camera and is used to capture a flat, neutral gamma curve well-suited for grading. Additionally, a High Dynamic Range mode, and Hybrid Log Gamma, can be used to record greater detail in both the shadow and highlight regions of a scene. Additional picture styles are available to provide a more gradable image, such as CINELIKE V and CINELIKE D, as well as an in-camera LUT to make monitoring easier. Also, users will have access to overcranking and undercranking Variable Frame Rate settings which provide speeds up to 2.5x slower in 4K (60 fps) and 7.5x slower in Full HD (240 fps). Also, a 4K Anamorphic mode is available, which will let you record in a proper 4:3 ratio for adjustment in post-production.

For greater recording versatility, the recording system frequency can be changed between 59.94 Hz (NTSC), 50.00 Hz (PAL), or 24.00 Hz (Cine) for worldwide use, and there is no recording duration limit for all settings. Three separate video control panels can also be used—shutter duration/ISO, shutter angle/ISO, or shutter duration/dB—to match various worldwide production needs.

The GH5S is designed to be an expandable system, with multiple options available to help improve video recording capabilities. Examples of this are the included BNC conversion cable for syncing time code settings with an external device for multi-camera setups; LINE input support via the 3.5mm mic input for using an external audio device; and the optional XLR Microphone Adapter that provides XLR inputs and physical controls through a hot shoe connection. Users can also use standard microphones and headphones via the 3.5mm input and output jacks.
Stills Recording and Depth-From-Defocus AF System
Beyond just a video camera, the GH5S is also adept at recording stills. Using the unique sensor architecture, the low-light capabilities and fast readout speeds make it ideal for working in difficult lighting conditions and for photographing fast-moving subjects. For 12-bit raw shooting, and when working with AF-S, continuous shooting up to 12 fps is possible, along with a top 8 fps shooting rate with AF-C. For greater color information, a 14-bit raw recording setting can also be used, and 11 fps and 7 fps continuous shooting rates are available.

For accelerated autofocus performance, and Advanced DFD (Depth-From-Defocus) technology is employed to quickly calculate the distance to subjects and adjust the focusing position in as little as 0.05 seconds. This contrast-detection type focus method benefits both still and video recording modes, as well as subject tracking applications where subject color, size, and motion vectors are used to intelligently lock-onto the moving subjects and ensure precise focus. The sensitivity and speed can be adjusted to further improve performance with certain subjects. It also features 225 AF areas which provide excellent control over where the camera will focus. Additionally, supporting working in low-light conditions, a Starlight AF feature enables accurate AF performance down to -5 EV.

Benefitting manual focus operation, focus peaking is available that highlights bright edges of contrast with a colored outline for quickly recognizing your focus point, as well as Touch MF Assist for touch-to-focus operation.
4K PHOTO Modes
Utilizing the GH5S's video recording capabilities, a trio of still shooting modes are available for recording continuous 8MP stills at a 60 or 30 fps shooting rate:
  • Burst: This mode will allow you to continuously record, making it ideal for instances where you need a fast frame rate in order to capture the best moment.
  • Pre-Burst: This mode is ideal for times when you're unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record images one second prior to and one second after pressing the shutter button in order to give you 60 frames to choose from.
  • Burst (S/S): This mode most closely follows the video recording process, and allows you to playback your video, pause at the chosen moment, and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame from the video and save it as a single 8MP frame.
Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi
  • A large OLED Live View Finder has an impressive 3.68m-dot resolution and 0.76x magnification for eye-level composition.
  • A larger means for image composition and playback, the 3.2" 1.62m-dot rear RGBW LCD monitor has a free angle, tilt and swivel design to support viewing from a variety of angles. It is also a touchscreen, which permits intuitive menu navigation and settings control.
  • Optimized for nighttime shooting, the viewfinder and rear screen can be tuned to benefit working in low-light conditions. A Night Mode allows you to separately reduce the brightness of the screen and finder in order to maintain your night-adjusted vision. Alternatively, brightness can be boosted by lowering the frame rate and increasing the gain in live view for working in extremely dark situation. And, for manual focusing, an MF Assist feature lets you zoom into the scene by 20x for focusing on small subjects.
  • Dual UHS-II SD card slots are present which provides settings such as Relay Recording to automatically switch cards when one is full; Backup Recording, which recording the same data to both cards simultaneously; and Allocation Recording, which lets you save certain files to each card for easier organization.
  • Constructed from magnesium alloy with die-cast front and rear frames, the GH5S features a durable design that also incorporates extensive sealing at each joint, dial, and button to render it both splash- and dust-proof as well as freezeproof to 14°F.

Tiffen 58mm Variable Neutral Density Filter

The 58mm Variable Neutral Density Filter from Tiffen offers a unique way of maintaining total control over your depth of field as well as presenting an efficient way to create some special effects. The filter is designed with a built-in rotating ring that controls neutral density ranging from 2 - 8 stops (0.6- 2.4). The heavier the density, the slower your shutter speed will be. This longer exposure allows the shutter to remain open long enough to record the same amount of light but will also create movement within the shot. Another major benefit of this filter is the elimination of having to buy and carry around individual neutral density filters. With this one filter, you can rotate to the degree of ND you want - a real time and money saver.

Simply mount the filter on your lens, set it to "Min" density then frame and focus. Care must be taken with focusing at heavier densities to make sure focus is accurate. However, if it isn't, switch to manual focus and rotate to the desired degree of filtration.

For example, if your standard exposure without the filter is 1/500 @ f/8 and you then set the filter to "Min", you change the shutter speed to 1/125 at the same aperture - thereby losing 2 stops of speed while gaining a hint of "blur" in the image. If that's not enough filtration, continue rotating the filter until you reach the shutter speed you desire. Using the above example, you can even get down to 1/2 second @ f/8 (8 stops). It should be noted that the calibration marks on the filter ring are to be used only for reference and should not be regarded as accurate settings for specific densities.

A Neutral Density filter is used to create some unusual special effects such as capturing the "blur" of the rippling water of a waterfall or the swirling effect of city traffic. Since it allows the use of slower shutter speeds in bright light, it becomes possible to create these special effects that would normally not be possible to capture without the filter. And, since it can also help to control your depth of field, it permits you to shoot at wider apertures. Ultimately, its value is in helping to prevent bright, overly washed out images shot in bright light.

The ColorCore process allows Tiffen to control the color and density of their filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually exhibit color and density variations. In this way, Tiffen can better control the various densities of their filters and thereby create more exact degrees of filtration.

Panasonic GH5S Reviews

A big improvement over the GH5. Superb in low light.

I'm a longtime GH5 owner having purchased one when it first came out, which I mostly use for video. I was recently looking to upgrade the GH5 to something with a larger sensor and better low light performance and less sensor reflections. I didn't want to spend over $2,000.00. I considered a Panasonic S5 but it doesn't do the high bit rates of the GH5 and cost more, and I would of had to spend more on all new accessories (batteries, lens mount adapter etc). So when the GH5s went on sale for $1,299.00 I decided to give it a try. I'm certainly glad I did. The GH5s is a big improvement over the GH5 for video and I can use all my GH5 accessories. Here is what I have found so far. Superb in low light: The GH5s has a new 10.28 megapixel sensor. This may seem like a low megapixel count by todays standards but is exactly what is needed for 4k video without scaling. The larger pixels perform much better in low light. Panasonic also gave this camera dual native ISO technology with native ISOs of 400 and 2500 (800 and 5000 in v-log) This combination gives this camera superb low light performance. One simple way to test for noise in the image is to set the camera on video at 30fps and leave the body cap on. Look through the viewfinder and raise the ISO until you can see noise in the blacks. With the regular GH5 I start to see noise at ISO 3200. On the GH5s I don't see any noise until ISO 40,000. This is a huge improvement. I carefully matched all settings before doing this test and used the Cinelike-D gamma setting. I can't imagine I would ever need to go this high on the ISO and would recommend staying close to the native ISOs whenever possible but it is nice to know you can. Larger Sensor: The GH5s has a 9% larger sensor than the GH5. This gives a noticeably wider field of view. It is not APSC or Full frame but is a improvement. Much less Sensor Reflections: Sensor reflections are not lens flares. They occur when bright light goes through the lens, hits the sensor and some of it bounces back and hits the back element of the lens and bounces back to the sensor creating a second ghost image of the light source. They are most noticeable with bright highlights (windows, lamps, Christmas lights etc). All digital camera have them to some extent but some are worse than others. Panasonic cameras have always had very shiny sensors and some of the worst sensor reflections I have seen, with the GH5 one of the worst offenders. My Sony a7r2 is much better in this regard with very minimal sensor reflections, although it can't match the video capabilities of the GH5 in other ways (It only shoots 8 bit video up to 100Mbps in 4k) I'm happy to report that the sensor reflections are much reduced in the GH5s and are on a par with the Sony. This is especially good as the GH5s is such a great low light camera you are going to want to use it for night exteriors with streetlights, car headlights and other light sources in the shot. Improved Color: Panasonic has improved the color science of this camera in all gamma settings. The slight green cast of the GH5 is gone and colors look more natural with a slightly redder look on the GH5s at the same settings. I certainly prefer it to the GH5. V-log and Hybrid Log gamma come pre-installed at no additional cost if you want to do color grading in post. If you do a lot of handheld shooting this is probably not the camera for you as there is no stabilizer (Panasonic stabilized lenses will work with it). In order to make the sensor a bit bigger Panasonic had to do away with the stabilizer. This is fine with me as I always use a gimbal for handheld work but it is good to keep in mind. Also at only 10.28 MP it is hardly a high resolution still camera, although it's stills look surprisingly good and should be fine for use on the web and many other uses. It is primarily a video camera and a very good one. It is also a excellent value at even regular price.

Using primarily for gimbal and car mounts as well as run and gun. Bought the GH5S over the S5 because it has full size hdmi and all intra 400 mbps codec. Chose GH5S over S1 because it has OLPF all intra 400 mbps and is smaller. Got this over the BGH1 because it has a screen and EVF. With a speedbooster on the one point eight crop factor you will not miss full frame. The GH5S is a workhorse and is not afraid of the dark.

I've owned a lot of video cameras. Most recent being; Red Komodo, Sony FS7, FS5, A7Sii, GH5, GH4, and this camera tops my list and sits right below the Komodo as my favorite. With a catch: You have to shoot 400mb All Intra LOG. And when you do, you end up with a beautiful image that allows you all the latitude to grade as you wish, with the dual ISO and exceptional low light capability giving you noise-free shadows. I sold this off when switching to my Komodo, but I would buy another in a heartbeat.

Monster in low light and capable for its age. This is my go to video cam for weddings, event coverage, everything. its cheap and gets the job done relative to the full frame counterparts. Light weight, pro quality, cheap memory. Say less shoot more. Its made me a lumix guy for sure.

This camera is for filmmakers. It's an excellent B Cam or even an A Cam. Even with the GH6 or - I'll tell you now having tested then side by side - it's still far superior in low light. This camera is film ready. Once you learn how to live without autofocus and compensate for lack of IBIS, you have one of the best cameras on the market. The most lethal combo would be combining this with the Atomos Ninja V which unlocks Pro Res Raw for some of the richest files available. The Bad: AF - Terrible IBIS - Non-existent The Good: 4k 24p 10bit 400mbps 4:2:2 Internal 4k 60p 10bit 150mbps 4:2:2 Internal Low Light Clean up to ISO 10,000 (sees in the dark) DUAL Card Slots Anamorphic Ready 4k 60p12bit RAW External with Atomos Ninja V Weather Sealed Timecode In & Out Line In Audio 1080p 240 fps

What is the crop factors when using the Metabones XL 0.64x?

Crop factor is use to determine the angle of view with a given lens mm in formats other than full frame. Normally the crop factor of MTF cameras as compared to full frame is 2x. However, a speed booster with a factor of 0.64x means 2 x 0.64x = 1.28 crop factor. The 0.64 is recommended if you are primarily doing video. If you do primarily stills, it is recommended that you use the 0.71x speedbooster since it has better corner sharpness than the 0.64. Lessened corner performance is less an issue in video than it would be in stills.
