a7C: Compact and Capable
Mixing the quality and advantages of a full-frame sensor with an especially sleek and portable design, the black Sony a7C offers the hybrid recording capabilities, 24.2MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor, and intelligent AF performance you would expect from an Alpha camera but with a form factor for all-day, everyday carry.
Exmor R Sensor, BIONZ X Processor, and 4D FOCUS
24.1MP Full-Frame BSI Sensor and Image Processing
Featuring a back-illuminated design, the full-frame 24.2-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor works with the BIONZ X image processor to offer high-resolution stills and video while minimizing noise and improving speed. This sensor structure works with a gapless on-chip lens design and an anti-reflection coating to improve light collection and enhance detail. Also, the copper wiring layer dramatically improves data transmission speed for creating 14-bit, high-resolution stills with a native sensitivity range from ISO 100-51200, which can be further expanded to ISO 50-204800.
Fast Continuous Shooting and Recording Versatility
The sensor and processor combination enables fast continuous shooting at up to 10 fps at full resolution, for approximately consecutive JPEGs or 115 consecutive raw files, and with full-time AF/AE when working with either a mechanical shutter or an electronic shutter.

Also, it enables internal UHD 4K video recording with a wide dynamic range using the full width of the full-frame sensor. The BIONZ X processor also works in conjunction with a high-speed front-end LSI to realize faster processing times along with the ability to capture an impressive 15-stop dynamic range at low sensitivity values.
Fast Hybrid Autofocus
 • Covering a majority of the image area, a Fast Hybrid AF system incorporates 693 phase-detection points along with 425 contrast-detection areas for quick and precise focusing in a variety of lighting conditions with sensitivity down to -4 EV.
 • Lock onto subjects quickly using Real-time Tracking for AI-based tracking on moving subjects or touch tracking for manual selection of the subject.
 • Real-time Eye AF, suitable for both humans and animals, also ensures critical sharpness when shooting portraits.
Video Recording
UHD 4K Video Recording in XAVC S Format
 • Internal recording of UHD 4K videos is possible in multiple frame rates up to 30 fps and using 2.4x oversampling renders greater detail and full pixel readout is possible for higher quality imagery with reduced moiré and aliasing.
 • Full HD 1080p recording is also supported in frame rates up to 120 fps, and both 4K and UHD resolutions utilize the 100 Mb/s XAVC S format contained within an MP4 wrapper with 4:2:0 8-bit sampling.
 • The high-speed, 120 fps recording also enables 4x and 5x slow-motion movie recording with the frame rate set to either 30p or 24p.
 • In addition to high-resolution internal recording, uncompressed HDMI output also enables the use of an optional external recorder for clean 4K recording with 4:2:2 8-bit sampling.
S-Log3 and Other Color and Gamma Controls
Affording extensive customizable color and gamma controls, the a7C allows users to adjust the gamma, black level, knee, color level, and more:
 • Use the same S-Log2 Gamma Curve that is found on high end Sony Cinema cameras that squeezes up to 1300% more dynamic range into the video signal then traditional REC709, for increased post-production flexibility.
 • HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) support permits recording within a wide color gamut for producing HDR-ready content directly from the camera.
 • S-Log3 is also available for producing a 15+-stop dynamic range with increased grading control in the shadow to mid-tone regions of the image.
5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization
Despite the sleek stature of the a7C, it features a 5-stop effective 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system that compensates for various types of camera shake encountered during handheld shooting of stills and video. This allows users to confidently use any lens, even adapted lenses, for critical imaging without encountering blur from camera shake.

For long focal lengths, the system will correct for pitch and yaw adjustments. Macro and high-magnification imagery, on the other hand, will benefit from the inclusion of horizontal and vertical shift compensation. All shooting styles will get usage out of the roll compensation. All 5 axes of stabilization will function at all times, even when used with third-party lenses and adapters or lenses with built-in optical stabilization.
Compact and Versatile Design
Integrated EVF and Vari-Angle LCD
 • Compact and lightweight body design, along with a rangefinder-inspired layout, make the a7C a sleek and portable camera for everyday shooting. Compared to other a7-series cameras, the a7C is approximately 20% smaller and lighter, akin to the size of an APS-C-format camera.
 • A 0.39"-type XGA OLED electronic viewfinder is featured and has a 2.36m-dot resolution and 0.59x magnification for bright, clear viewing in high detail.
 • Rear 3.0" 921.6k-dot rear LCD features a side-open vari-angle design along to benefit working from high, low, and front-facing angles. It's also a touchscreen for intuitive control and playback.
 • Magnesium-alloy chassis along with a weather-sealed design offers a durable overall construction for use in a variety of conditions.
 • The large-capacity NP-FZ100 battery offers approximately 740 shots per charge when working with the rear LCD or 680 shots per charge when working with the EVF.
 • Single SD memory card slot is rated to support UHS-II memory cards for fast transfer speeds.
Ports and Interface
 • A USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port offers for fast and reliable tethering support and also allows the camera to be charged from the host power source while connected.
 • Multi Interface Shoe supports working with the optional ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone or XLR-K3M XLR Adapter Kit, which provide improved, clear audio recording sound by sending a digital audio signal to the camera, opposed to an analog signal.
 • Both 3.5mm microphone and headphone ports are available for greater audio recording control.
Wireless Connectivity
 • Built-in Wi-Fi enables the a7C to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online to social networking, via email, and to cloud storage sites. Support for both 2.4 and 5.0 GHz bands also enables wireless tethered shooting support.
 • Bluetooth connectivity allows for location data acquisition.
 • NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, which allows for one-touch connection between the camera and mobile device. Once connected, the linked mobile device can also display a live view image on its screen and remotely control the camera's shutter.

Order came fast, very satisfied.

Not quite perfect.

Great compact size for a full-frame camera. The smaller grip is OK. Fewer programmable buttons not an issue for me. I would prefer a tilt screen for street photography, rather than fully articulating. Smaller EVF is functional, but disappointing. This camera is probably great for blogging, but it's a little awkward for street photography. Not quite perfect.

I use this camera with either the 24-105 f4 or the 40mm f2.5 prime. Light and easily carried in a small pouch when I'm out hiking. Lack of custom buttons and the small grip are not an issue for me. Only negative is the dinky evf. Would certainly recommend this camera.

I love the size

I stored my Canon 6D and R5 in the cupboard for this Sony so rating it a 3* shouldn't be signaling an inadequacy. I bought it because I wanted a (1) small (2) full frame with (3) good performance and, so far, it seems as if that's what I got. I don't have a problem with certain features that some have complained about, such as the small viewfinder (I do like its situation on the far left) and the menu (which I find easier to navigate than the Canon). The grip, likewise, isn't a problem - although I haven't used the camera yet with a bigger and heavier lens. The photos I've taken are sharp and detailed (I process in the current DxO and in Photoshop CS5 and I am a pixel peeper (which means it must be good or I'd be complaining). I love the size: it's small, light, inconspicuous, and jacket pocketable. The kit lens is good and small, but I would prefer an equally good kit lens with similar size but with a wider range - I'm sure by now Sony engineers have conquered the laws of physics in order to get me my jacket pocketable a7c with 18-135 or 24-105 good performance E lens. THEN we'll consider a 4*.

small and light

The weight and size is likely the reason you want this camera. And there are plenty on small lenses it can pair with. It all makes APS-C cameras quite unnecessary. Of course, to keep the weight and price down, corners were cut. Camera doesn't have all typical dials and buttons, and the grip is very shallow. The EVF is very small. Typical for Sony the LCD is terrible. And, of course, the colors you get by default are nowhere as good as I get from my Nikon, you need to be willing to shoot raw and do quite a bit of surgery in Lightroom or other editor.

Compact Dream

This little guy and his full frame are a dream! I was tired of lugging around a huge camera so the Sony 7C was the answer in every way. Small, light, and tons of technology! The only downfall for me is that most of the controls are internal, of course, they have to be since it's a small body but it's worth the sacrifice!

If you're a street photographer this is a great little performer or all around general use,it fits in a small bag or large pocket with a small lens such as the sony 40mm f/2.5 I use mine as a backup to a Sony a7r4,it goes everywhere with me a real joy to use.

This is my second 7c body. It is small and lightweight so I carry it everywhere. I got the chrome so I could easily tell the difference from my black 7c, but now find that I can read the top dials more easily.

Will this record video to an external SSD like a Samsung T drive?
Asked by: Robert
Unfortunately, according to Sony, you would not be able to use an SSD external hard drive such as the Samsung T Drive as an external recorder. You would need to connect an external recorder to the HDMI output on the Sony Alpha a7C Mirrorless Digital Camera, while the Samsung T Drive uses USB-C ports on the hard drive.

Is it possible to record on the card in the camera while at the same time running an hdmi cable to a monitor?
Asked by: Jeff
Yes. After testing it for myself to confirm, the Sony A7C can record while outputting to an external monitor with some caveats. Firstly, in 4K it is limited to 24p and will disable the LCD when recording in 30p. Secondly, you have to make sure "HDMI Info. Display" (in the HDMI settings page in your camera menu) is set to OFF.

Question regarding A7C vs A7IV purchase? I'm a small business owner and sell products on my Etsy store. Currently I use my iPhone to take product photos but I want to get a Sony camera. I need something that can take great product photos along with videos since many online retailers are now including videos of the products. I was thinking of initially getting the A7SIII but decided against it due to my photography needs. I thought about waiting and purchasing the A7IV later this year, but now considering the A7C. Which camera would you recommend for a small online business that sells handmade jewelry, home goods, and artworks/cards/prints? Would an A7C suffice, or should I just wait for the A7IV?
Asked by: Julia
For that type of use A7C is enough. The only downside of the A7C is that it has only one card slot, but for that type of use it shouldn't be a problem. Instead of getting a more expensive camera I would get a macro lens, a great tripod and head, high quality led lights with a softbox would make a much bigger difference in getting high quality photos and videos than purchasing a more expensive camera than the A7c.

Asked by: Jacob
The Video quality is nearly identical between the Sony Alpha a7C and a7 III. The differences in vide will be in other aspects of shooting. The a7C has an unlimited record time while the a7 III has a recording limit of 29 Minutes. The a7C adds the flip out screen, newer focusing algorithms and the ability to save gyro information.
