Sony A7C Overview

By B&H Photo's
Sony a7C Mirrorless Camera (Black)
a7C: Compact and Capable
Mixing the quality and advantages of a full-frame sensor with an especially sleek and portable design, the black Sony a7C offers the hybrid recording capabilities, 24.2MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor, and intelligent AF performance you would expect from an Alpha camera but with a form factor for all-day, everyday carry.
Exmor R Sensor, BIONZ X Processor, and 4D FOCUS
24.1MP Full-Frame BSI Sensor and Image Processing
Featuring a back-illuminated design, the full-frame 24.2-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor works with the BIONZ X image processor to offer high-resolution stills and video while minimizing noise and improving speed. This sensor structure works with a gapless on-chip lens design and an anti-reflection coating to improve light collection and enhance detail. Also, the copper wiring layer dramatically improves data transmission speed for creating 14-bit, high-resolution stills with a native sensitivity range from ISO 100-51200, which can be further expanded to ISO 50-204800.
Fast Continuous Shooting and Recording Versatility
The sensor and processor combination enables fast continuous shooting at up to 10 fps at full resolution, for approximately consecutive JPEGs or 115 consecutive raw files, and with full-time AF/AE when working with either a mechanical shutter or an electronic shutter.

Also, it enables internal UHD 4K video recording with a wide dynamic range using the full width of the full-frame sensor. The BIONZ X processor also works in conjunction with a high-speed front-end LSI to realize faster processing times along with the ability to capture an impressive 15-stop dynamic range at low sensitivity values.
Fast Hybrid Autofocus
  • Covering a majority of the image area, a Fast Hybrid AF system incorporates 693 phase-detection points along with 425 contrast-detection areas for quick and precise focusing in a variety of lighting conditions with sensitivity down to -4 EV.
  • Lock onto subjects quickly using Real-time Tracking for AI-based tracking on moving subjects or touch tracking for manual selection of the subject.
  • Real-time Eye AF, suitable for both humans and animals, also ensures critical sharpness when shooting portraits.
Video Recording
UHD 4K Video Recording in XAVC S Format
  • Internal recording of UHD 4K videos is possible in multiple frame rates up to 30 fps and using 2.4x oversampling renders greater detail and full pixel readout is possible for higher quality imagery with reduced moiré and aliasing.
  • Full HD 1080p recording is also supported in frame rates up to 120 fps, and both 4K and UHD resolutions utilize the 100 Mb/s XAVC S format contained within an MP4 wrapper with 4:2:0 8-bit sampling.
  • The high-speed, 120 fps recording also enables 4x and 5x slow-motion movie recording with the frame rate set to either 30p or 24p.
  • In addition to high-resolution internal recording, uncompressed HDMI output also enables the use of an optional external recorder for clean 4K recording with 4:2:2 8-bit sampling.
S-Log3 and Other Color and Gamma Controls
Affording extensive customizable color and gamma controls, the a7C allows users to adjust the gamma, black level, knee, color level, and more:
  • Use the same S-Log2 Gamma Curve that is found on high end Sony Cinema cameras that squeezes up to 1300% more dynamic range into the video signal then traditional REC709, for increased post-production flexibility.
  • HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) support permits recording within a wide color gamut for producing HDR-ready content directly from the camera.
  • S-Log3 is also available for producing a 15+-stop dynamic range with increased grading control in the shadow to mid-tone regions of the image.
5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization
Despite the sleek stature of the a7C, it features a 5-stop effective 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system that compensates for various types of camera shake encountered during handheld shooting of stills and video. This allows users to confidently use any lens, even adapted lenses, for critical imaging without encountering blur from camera shake.

For long focal lengths, the system will correct for pitch and yaw adjustments. Macro and high-magnification imagery, on the other hand, will benefit from the inclusion of horizontal and vertical shift compensation. All shooting styles will get usage out of the roll compensation. All 5 axes of stabilization will function at all times, even when used with third-party lenses and adapters or lenses with built-in optical stabilization.
Compact and Versatile Design
Integrated EVF and Vari-Angle LCD
  • Compact and lightweight body design, along with a rangefinder-inspired layout, make the a7C a sleek and portable camera for everyday shooting. Compared to other a7-series cameras, the a7C is approximately 20% smaller and lighter, akin to the size of an APS-C-format camera.
  • A 0.39"-type XGA OLED electronic viewfinder is featured and has a 2.36m-dot resolution and 0.59x magnification for bright, clear viewing in high detail.
  • Rear 3.0" 921.6k-dot rear LCD features a side-open vari-angle design along to benefit working from high, low, and front-facing angles. It's also a touchscreen for intuitive control and playback.
  • Magnesium-alloy chassis along with a weather-sealed design offers a durable overall construction for use in a variety of conditions.
  • The large-capacity NP-FZ100 battery offers approximately 740 shots per charge when working with the rear LCD or 680 shots per charge when working with the EVF.
  • Single SD memory card slot is rated to support UHS-II memory cards for fast transfer speeds.
Ports and Interface
  • A USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port offers for fast and reliable tethering support and also allows the camera to be charged from the host power source while connected.
  • Multi Interface Shoe supports working with the optional ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone or XLR-K3M XLR Adapter Kit, which provide improved, clear audio recording sound by sending a digital audio signal to the camera, opposed to an analog signal.
  • Both 3.5mm microphone and headphone ports are available for greater audio recording control.
Wireless Connectivity
  • Built-in Wi-Fi enables the a7C to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online to social networking, via email, and to cloud storage sites. Support for both 2.4 and 5.0 GHz bands also enables wireless tethered shooting support.
  • Bluetooth connectivity allows for location data acquisition.
  • NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, which allows for one-touch connection between the camera and mobile device. Once connected, the linked mobile device can also display a live view image on its screen and remotely control the camera's shutter.
Sony FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 Lens
The Portable Powerhouse Standard Zoom
Impressively compact and versatile, the Sony FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 is a wide-angle to long-normal zoom characterized by its retractable design and sleek profile. Its svelte design makes this lens ideal for walkaround, everyday shooting, and the flexible focal length range benefits a wide range of subject types, from street shooting to portraiture to travel photography.
Small and Light
Small size and lightweight design is what this lens is all about, meaning it's the perfect companion for casual shooting days when a single, versatile, and portable lens is most desirable.
  • Retractable design maintains an especially compact profile when not in use, measuring just 1.8" long.
  • Weighing 5.9 oz, its featherweight stature pairs well with compact full-frame or APS-C bodies.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant design suits working in inclement weather conditions.
Optics and AF
  • Three aspherical elements help to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
  • The use of specialized elements also contributes to a smaller, lighter physical design.
  • Linear motor, along with an internal focusing mechanism, promotes fast, precise, and quiet focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications.
  • In addition to the variety afforded by the 28-60mm focal length range, this lens also has a versatile 11.8" minimum focusing distance that enables working with close-up subjects.
  • Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Sony A7C Reviews

Mirrorless Magic in a Compact Package

By Dibalok
Rated 5 out of 5
Date: 2023-09-19

The Sony A7C is a remarkable mirrorless camera that combines portability and performance. Its full-frame sensor delivers exceptional image quality, and the fast autofocus ensures you never miss a moment. The compact design is perfect for on-the-go shooting, and the flip-out touchscreen makes framing and navigating menus a breeze. Video enthusiasts will appreciate its 4K capabilities, while the in-body stabilization guarantees smooth footage. Although the battery life could be better, the A7C's versatility and image quality make it a fantastic choice for photographers and videographers seeking a compact yet powerful camera for their creative endeavors.

Looking for the ideal compact full-frame camera

I had high hopes about using this as an always with me compact camera, but with a full-frame sensor. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work out. First and foremost, this camera isn't really all that compact. I own a A7RII and when you put these two cameras side by side, the only material difference between the two is that the A7C doesn't have a viewfinder. That's it. The grip is just slightly smaller and not enough to notice an difference. The height is the same (save the viewfinder) and depth and width are the same. So it begs the question, why not use the same sensor that's in the A7RII or III in it? Did they do that so it wouldn't infringe on the RX1R, even though thats a fixed-lens camera? Its unfortunate because it basically leaves Leica as the only real maker of compact full frame cameras. If it had the 47 or 60 mp sensor in it, I absolutely would have kept it. Thats even despite the fact that the number of reasonably fast compact Sony lenses for it is exactly 3. I might have reconsidered if there was a f1.4 or f1.7 24mm, f28mm, or 35mm lens... Hoping there actually is a A7C II and they use at least the 47mp from the AR7III.

Lite and compact go everywhere full frame for travel, street, landscape or just casual photography coupled with a Sony 50,40 or 24 small G lens an exceptional value always with me!

Really wanted to Love

I was excited to try the smaller size/weight. I found the menu button to be too far of a reach for my thumb and I kept inadvertently switching from viewfinder to monitor. The grip did fell too small for my hands - used more pinching than rounded ergonomics. I did like the viewfinder on the left and articulated.

Great feel.

This is a great camera. I love the vintage looks of this camera. I bought it for street photography to use with my Zeiss 35mm f2.8 and Zeiss 55mm f1.8 lenses. Very neat, compact kit. Yes, I wish it had two SD card slots, a better EVF, more buttons, and a higher resolution sensor. But then it would be a different camera altogether. Truthfully, I agonized over this purchase. I bought one from B&H and returned it. Then I bought it again, and I'm keeping it. (thanks B&H.) I can live with the so-called short comings to get the positives: (1) classic looks, (2) full-frame sensor, (3) compact form factor. I understand an A7C MK 2 is coming later this year with more bells and whistles, but I decided to get this model because it's already a great camera that meets my needs.

Since my purchase, this camera has transformed my photography journey into a captivating adventure. The sleek design and lightweight build make it perfect for traveling, and street photography. Its full-frame sensor and 28-60mm lens deliver stunningly vivid and sharp images, capturing details and colors so accurate to use it in product photos also. The Real-time Eye AF and Tracking ensure my subjects are flawlessly focused, while the flip-out screen offered me dynamic angles for both photos and videos. The Sony a7C offers portability, performance, and creative potential in one. If you're ready to capture life's essence like never before, this camera is your ultimate partner-in-crime.

Recommend chose to buy.

This is a recommendation to anyone looking to be on budget. Having to chose between the camera body and/ or included lens will not top a bundle quite like. During weeks or months of discounted offers will save you more then buying each equipment displayed separately.

ACCEPTS ALL SONY LENSES?

ACCEPTS ALL SONY LENSES?
Asked by: abraham
The Sony FE (full frame sensor) cameras have a flange focal distance of 18mm. For information about what this means, search for "flange focal distance" on Wikipedia and you'll see a chart of other systems, including other mirrorless systems. The Nikon Z-mount is 16mm, Fujifilm X-mount is 17.7, the Canon EF-M is 18mm, and the Canon RF mount is 20mm, so those are not going to adapt. But there are many other systems, mirrorless, SLR, and other, that have enough difference to make adapters possible. The Leica M, at 27..8mm, has the shortest flange focal distance I know of that is currently adapted. So no, you won't be able to use lenses created for the new Nikon and Canon mirrorless systems, but there are others you can use.

Asked by: Seher
Yes, you can mount your Nikon F-mount G lenses on Sony cameras with the correct lens adapter. As for the flash you can use the Nikon SB 900 flash on M-mode. Please be aware that Metada and electronic comunication would be limited using off brand lenses and flash.

I don't understand all the discussion about APS-C ...

I don't understand all the discussion about APS-C E mount crop sensors. So, will my Sony E 4.5-6.3/55-210 OSS lens for my A6000 work the same on this camera?
Asked by: Joseph
To add to Rob’s answer, it kind of depends what you mean by “work the same.” If you’re asking if putting that lens on the a7c will give you pretty much the same experience as putting that lens on your A6000, the answer is yes. (When I say “experience” I’m mainly referring to the field of view). What’s happening, though, is that you’d be essentially wasting a bunch of sensor space on the a7c. The a7c has a much bigger sensor than the a6000, so you need to get a full-frame lens if you want to take full advantage of the benefits of a full-frame camera. If you put that lens on a full-frame camera like the A7C, the camera will operate in APS-C mode and only use a smaller portion of its sensor. But if you’re asking if an APS-C 55-210 lens will “work the same” on this camera as a Full-Frame 55-210? No. The full-frame lens will give you a wider field of view by a factor of 1.5x because it’s able to use the whole sensor. Sony denotes its Full-Frame lenses by putting “FE” in the model numbers, as opposed to just “E” for APS-C crop lenses. I hope that helps.
