The Portable Powerhouse Standard Zoom

Impressively compact and versatile, the Sony FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 is a wide-angle to long-normal zoom characterized by its retractable design and sleek profile. Its svelte design makes this lens ideal for walkaround, everyday shooting, and the flexible focal length range benefits a wide range of subject types, from street shooting to portraiture to travel photography.

Small and Light

Small size and lightweight design is what this lens is all about, meaning it's the perfect companion for casual shooting days when a single, versatile, and portable lens is most desirable.
  • Retractable design maintains an especially compact profile when not in use, measuring just 1.8" long.
  • Weighing 5.9 oz, its featherweight stature pairs well with compact full-frame or APS-C bodies.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant design suits working in inclement weather conditions.

Optics and AF

  • Three aspherical elements help to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
  • The use of specialized elements also contributes to a smaller, lighter physical design.
  • Linear motor, along with an internal focusing mechanism, promotes fast, precise, and quiet focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications.
  • In addition to the variety afforded by the 28-60mm focal length range, this lens also has a versatile 11.8" minimum focusing distance that enables working with close-up subjects.
  • Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Sony FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 Reviews

FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 Mechanical Extension Stiff / Resistant

Image quality is very good. Light weight / compact lens with limited zoom range. Mechanical operation feels cheap and low quality. Mechanical operation when extending for use is stiff and resistant. Resistant / jerky feel when twisting the zoom ring. Will not get much use (definitely would not recommend).

Great Small and Lightweight Lens

I Just got the Sony A7IV and wanted a small and light lens to use for hiking and backpacking etc. I have been fairly impressed by the sharpness and quality of it for its size and weight. Don't expect it to match the GM lenses or anything, but for the intended use I am quite pleased. Pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Pros: Small and light (5.9 oz / 167 g) Good Sharpness/Color/Contrast etc. Quiet and fast focusing Basic weather sealing Decent zoom range (specially considering the size and weight of it) Cons: Not the best in low light (that should be expected with f/4-5.6, one should note, it's only f/4 at 28mm) Price - (better if you get it as a bundle/kit) Zoom action could be a little smoother - though, seems to be improving with some use. Misc: 28mm = f/4 29mm - 34mm = f/4.5 35mm - 41mm = f/5.0 42mm - 60mm = f/5.6 Dimensions Retracted 2.6 x 1.8 / 66.6 x 45 mm Length at Maximum Extension 2.73 / 69.3 mm Weight 5.9 oz / 167 g

Slow autofocus and searches too much for my taste.

Completely Underrated

One of my favorite Sony lenses. It is pretty sharp, focuses very fast and silently, and it is tiny. My only complaint would be that it is not great in low-light, but you knew that from the specs. I would recommend this lens to anyone who wants great image quality in a tiny package.

Nice, light traveling lens

This is a kit lens but a decent quality and quite affordable. It's not up to the quality of G Master especially on the edges of the frame but certainly better than a cell phone camera lens.

Great lens, but I am not sure who it is for

This is an excellent lens, especially as a kit lens. There is a little distortion at 28 mm depending on the distance and angle from the subject and, because of the variable aperture, you can get pleasing background blur at 28 mm where the lens is at F/4 and also a 60 mm where the lens is at F/5.6. Because of the large sensor on full frame cameras, the smaller aperture is not nearly as big of a deal as I thought it would be at first. I personally think this lens is quite sharp with nice contrast and good color. Autofocus is quick, quiet, and accurate in both video and stills (it is a new native Sony lens with a linear motor after all). That said, you shouldn't buy this lens unless you know that you absolutely want the smallest zoom possible with an F/4-F/5.6. As a kit lens, yes, it's great, and I am not selling mine anytime soon. But, at full list price, I think the money could be better spent elsewhere. That is not a knock on this lens as I think Sony did an excellent job on the lens, I just don't know who this lens is actually designed for outside of needing something more compact and performant to bundle with the a7C kit.

not ok for the price

i am a little not experienced with sony lenses. But, I have to say, I expected more. The mechanism opening the lens each time before using it is a bit sticky. Looks like it needs some lubricant. It will take some time getting used to.

Great little lens

A great little lens. Compact, well built, sharp images, good colors, and swift and silent AF. Pairs well with the A7c. Its small size does not draw much attention when out and about. Not perfect. Compromises were made in focal length and aperture at both ends. But well worth it if purchased with the A7c kit.

Yes, it is an E mount lens and will work, however it is for a full frame camera and so the effective focal length will be similar to a 40-90mm.

Is this lens weather sealed?
Asked by: Oldrin
No, this lens is not weather seal. The rear mount open as you zoom the lens out and you can see all the electronics inside the lens. Also dust and water can easily go in between the rings on the lens if the unit is not protect against the element.

What if any lens hood will work with this? thanks
Asked by: Josephine
Why? This is not meant to compete with anything else. It is made to be tiny, compact and easily ported with minimal weight and size. Pocketable? I had the version for the NEX series years ago and it was sharp enough then though it broke down after a couple years and could no longer be recognized by the camera so it was worthless
