Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S Overview

Built for speed and exacting sharpness, Nikon's NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S is a fast, normal-length prime featuring advanced optics and a bright design to suit everything from available-light portraiture to selective-focus documentary subjects. The f/1.2 maximum aperture excels in difficult lighting conditions and offers impressive control over depth of field to help isolate subject matter against a blurred background. A series of extra-low dispersion and aspherical elements also help to achieve high sharpness, notable clarity, and accurate rendering while ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats, as well as a Super Integrated Coating, suppress flare, ghosting, and surface reflections for improved contrast and color fidelity.

Complementing the optical design, a multi-focus system, which employs two stepping motors, helps to realize impressively fast, accurate, and quiet focus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to suit both stills and video needs. The lens also has a unique physical design, which incorporates a top OLED information panel that can be used to quickly confirm aperture and focus settings, and an assignable L.Fn button permits making exposure and settings adjustments via the lens. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Bright normal-length prime is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras, but can also be used with DX models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
Impressively bright f/1.2 maximum aperture excels in low lighting conditions and also offers extensive control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction. A Super Integrated Coating is also featured on multiple elements to help ensure consistently accurate colors.
Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate focusing performance. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Integrated OLED lens information panel allows you to quickly confirm aperture setting, focus distance, and depth of field figures right on the lens in both bright and dark situations.
Assignable L.Fn button works in conjunction with camera-based Fn buttons to provide a seamless point for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S Reviews

A 50mm with a Special Touch!

I own the smaller and lighter Z 50mm f/1.8S lens. Prior to the arrival of the Z 50mm f/1.2S, it was the only native Z mount 50mm available. And quite frankly, the f/1.8S is perhaps the sharpest 50mm lens I've ever used on a camera over the 20 years or so I've been shooting with Nikon gear. At first I balked at the idea of the f/1.2 for two reasons. The price was one of them. While I have no qualms about purchasing lens that cost over US$2,000 (I own quite a few), the idea of a 50mm at this price seemed ridiculous. The second reason was the feedback from those who own this lens stating it's very large and very heavy. Again, I have other lenses that weigh more than the 50mm f/1.2. But they are zoom lenses that provide arguably greater versatility (e.g. Z 70-200 f/2.8S). However, as I read and followed a number of photographers who purchased the lens, including several who owned its smaller f/1.8S sibling, I finally succumbed to the self-imposed pressure and bought it. I can say without equivocation, I have no regrets. Certain lenses have a unique quality-a unique characteristic-that is heard to verbalize, but easy to demonstrate. Such is the case with the 50mm f/1.2S. Yes, it's light transmission is clearly greater than its sibling. I suspect this has to do with technical design issues such as the elements in the lens. It's autofocus is, in my view, noticeably faster than its sibling. Moreover, there is an optical quality that makes this lens stand out from its smaller sibling and several of the other Z mount lenses. My clients may never know that I am using a 50mm f/1.2S over another lens. But I know once I capture the image, it offers me something with just a little more of that special sauce, if you will, as I create images for clients. Can you do just fine without it? Of course you can. But if you are a demanding photographer with an affinity for the best of the 50mm focal range, I recommend this lens.

Instant Joy!

It is a pretty steep price tag and you'd be hard pressed to see a notable difference between this and the 50mm f/1.8, but I can't say enough about this lens. The high-quality build is apparent from the moment you pick it up. It's incredibly fast, and the pictures are superb.

Amazing low light, fast prime 50mm Lens

If you can splurge and get the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 s, I highly recommend it. The ability to shoot in low-light conditions makes this my go to prime for all things near and dear to my heart (literally as it is still a 50mm prime). The autofocus is fast and quiet with some typical response issues in low-light conditions but, nothing that cannot be overcome by selecting an area with contrast. The quality of this lens is apparent only in it's ability to pull shots where the standard f/2.8 simply leaves something to be desired. Tack sharp shots with killer bokeh are a thing of beauty with this lens. I LOVE THIS LENS and find myself using it so much more than the FTZ w/ my nifty 50 f/1.4 combo. It just seems like the shots are crisper and cleaner with the Z lens versus the legacy nifty 50/FTZ combo. Overall, this lens is expensive but, it is simply my favorite lens in my kit (to date).

Wow! This lens will astound, delight, engage, and exhilarate

My favorite prime lens is a 50 mm. Over the years I have owned three along with a close cousin, a Micro-Nikkor 55 mm f/3.5K. Good lenses all, but hands down the Z 50 mm f/1.2 S is tops. And not just tops among my 50s; it is far and away the best Nikkor I own. The Z 50 mm f/1.2 S quickly became my go-to lens. It is solid and it easily earned my trust to deliver what I ask it to. Superior image quality. Fast and accurate focusing. Intensely acute even wide open. Out-of-focus areas melt into the background with fluid smoothness. The resulting bokeh isolates the main subject clearly and adds exquisite beauty. Edge-to-edge acuity makes it perfect for group portraits as well as for full height and to length individual portraits - think maternity. Coupled with a Z 7II, the 50/1.2 renders gorgeous colors, especially at ISO 64. In my experience as a stills photographer there is one knock on this lens: the control ring moves too freely to prevent unintended input. I set the control ring for ISO control (can also control aperture and exposure compensation) but, even trying consciously not to, I was constantly changing my original setting when hand-holding the lens. This became frustrating to the point I reset the control ring to have no function. However, videographers probably praise this easy movement because they can adjust aperture so very smoothly.

I was expecting it to be good for as much as it costs and it exceeds my exceptions by a good bit.

Incredible bokeh, and sharpness! Fast focus although it is a little bit noisy. Feels well built and durable but I do wish it was smaller and lighter. Two small gripes but overall I'm very happy with it!

The best 50mm nikon lens ever.
